Founder Diaries · The Signature Home · The Case For It
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
It is a fair question, and the usual answers are weak. Not because fragrance is nice, and not because expensive homes do it. The real argument is that your home already has a smell, it simply is not one you chose, and choosing it is cheaper and quieter than most people expect.
Quick answers — read this first
Why should a home have a signature fragrance? Because a house without one is not neutral, it simply smells of whatever happened in it most recently, usually cooking. A single repeated fragrance gives the home a default state, makes it read as one place rather than a set of separately scented rooms, and over months becomes recognisably yours, because a smell is associated with a place only through repetition. It is also cheaper than the alternative: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) runs 400ml of pure fragrance oil for up to 75 days, roughly five fills a year, at 5W.

Does a signature fragrance actually make a difference to how a home feels? Yes, in a specific way: it removes variability. Most homes swing between smelling of last night's food, of cleaning products, and of nothing, and that swing is what reads as ordinary. A constant low-level scent means the house has one state that visitors meet every time. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) holds that state across 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, on 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers so nobody has to remember it.

Is a signature home fragrance expensive to maintain? Less than most candle habits. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) uses 5W, which is roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule, and its 400ml tank of pure fragrance oil lasts up to 75 days, so a year is about five refills of the same oil. The recurring cost is fragrance, not equipment, and buying the same fragrance five times is exactly what builds the signature.
The short answer
Short answer: because a home without a signature still smells of something, usually the last thing cooked in it. One repeated fragrance gives the house a default state, makes it read as one place instead of a set of scented rooms, and becomes recognisably yours through repetition. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) runs it across 1000m³ on about five 400ml refills a year.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) with a single base-weighted fragrance, run low and left unchanged for a full year.
Next step: if you want help picking one fragrance you can commit to for a year rather than a month, ask us what fits your home.
Four reasons a home benefits from a single, repeated fragranceRecognition - a smell becomes yours only through repetitionCoherence - one scent reads as one home, not four separate roomsBaseline - the house has a default smell instead of last night's dinnerCost - about five refills a year rather than a candle habitNone of it works if the scent keeps changing
The case for a signature is not that fragrance is nice. It is that a house without one still smells of something, and that something is whatever happened in it most recently.

Straight answer
Why bother giving my home a signature fragrance at all?
Because there is no such thing as a house that smells of nothing. A home with no signature smells of the last thing that happened in it: Tuesday's tadka, Wednesday's floor cleaner, the wardrobe on a humid Thursday. That variability is what a visitor reads, subconsciously, as an ordinary house, and it is the thing a single repeated fragrance fixes. Four arguments, in ascending order of importance. Coherence: one scent through the connected living space makes the home read as one place, where a different fragrance per room reads as several rooms that happen to share an address. A default state: a low continuous scent means the house always returns to the same baseline instead of swinging between cooking, cleaning products and nothing. Recognition: this is the real one. A smell becomes associated with a place through repeated pairing, so a fragrance only becomes yours by being the same for months. People who change their home fragrance every month are, without knowing it, guaranteeing that they will never have a signature. Cost: unglamorous but true. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, uses 5W, and runs 400ml of pure fragrance oil for up to 75 days, so a year is roughly five refills of the same oil and about 1.5 units of electricity a month. The Vaayu is a nebuliser, not a mister: it takes pure fragrance oil in its own 400ml tank, with no water and no dilution. What it will not do is compensate for the basics: a home that smells good is aired and cleaned first and scented second, and fragrance over a stale room gives you both smells at once. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original compositions, made in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Your home already has a smell. A signature simply means you chose it, it is the same every day, and it has been the same long enough for people to recognise it as yours.
The cost argument is the one people underestimate. One SOSA Vaayu covers 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft) at 5W, roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month, on a 400ml tank of pure oil lasting up to 75 days - about five refills a year, all of the same fragrance.

Three arguments, in order of how much they change the house

Three arguments. The first two are about how the house reads. The third is the one that decides whether you actually end up with a signature or just another shelf of half-used bottles.

1
It gives the house a default
Otherwise the home smells of whatever happened last
Think about what your entrance smells like at four different moments: an hour after dinner, on a wet morning, after the floors have been mopped, and at eleven at night with the windows shut. In most homes those are four different smells, and a guest gets whichever one the timing hands them. A continuous low-level fragrance does not erase those events, it gives the house something to return to between them. That is the difference between a home that smells good sometimes and a home that smells like itself.
Tip: aim for a default, not a peak. The best result is boring and identical.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu holds that default across 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, from a single point on the air path.

2
One scent reads as one home
Per-room fragrance quietly undoes the effect you paid for
Buying a scent per room feels generous and produces the opposite of luxury, because the transitions give the game away. Walk from a vanilla bedroom into a citrus passage and you notice the change rather than either fragrance, and noticing is precisely what a signature avoids. A single composition through the connected living space also lets you run each part of it lower, since the scent is not being asked to establish itself afresh in every doorway. Kitchens and bathrooms are the sensible exceptions, and only because they are working rooms with jobs of their own.
SOSA Vaayu
One machine, one fragrance, one air path. That is all a whole floor needs, and it is cheaper than four devices.
See SOSA Vaayu →
3
Repetition is the whole mechanism
A fragrance becomes yours only by being the same for months
This is where most people lose the thing they were trying to build. Home fragrance is sold on novelty, seasonal editions, a new scent for a new mood, and every one of those purchases resets the association a guest was slowly forming. Recognition works by repeated pairing: the same smell, in the same place, enough times. A useful test is that if a friend cannot describe your home's smell after four visits, you have probably changed it at least twice. Buy one fragrance you can live with rather than one you find exciting, and then buy it again.
Tip: the second purchase of the same oil is what turns a fragrance into a signature.
SOSA Vaayu
A 400ml tank lasting up to 75 days makes a year about five refills - five chances to stay loyal to one scent.
See SOSA Vaayu →
The SOSA principle
The reason to have a signature is not that fragrance is luxurious. It is that the alternative is a house that smells like an accident, and accidents are rarely flattering.
Choosing a smell for your home is not indulgence. It is the same decision as choosing the paint, made once and then left alone.
SOSA Vaayu
A default state for the house: SOSA Vaayu, waterless, rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - running low and continuously. ₹11,999.

The argument nobody makes: it is cheaper than not having one

If you are weighing this up against what you already do, this table is the comparison worth making. It is not fragrance against no fragrance. It is a signature against the arrangement you have now.

If this has convinced you and the next question is which fragrance, two pieces follow on: how to choose a fragrance that feels like your home covers matching a scent to your materials, your light and your climate, and how to create a signature scent for your house is the step-by-step method including how to test one properly before committing to it. Both sit under our pillar guide on how to make your home feel more expensive.

A note on expectations, since this page is the argument rather than the method. A signature will make your home coherent and recognisable. It will not make it clean. Damp, a musty wardrobe, pet odour, cooking soaked into upholstery and new-furniture off-gassing all need ventilation, cleaning or time first, fragrance is not an air purifier and makes no health claim, and scent over an unclean smell simply gives you both. Also: the Vaayu takes pure fragrance oil in its own 400ml tank, never water and never a water-based diffuser fragrance made for ultrasonic machines. A note from Sonal

People ask me whether a signature fragrance is worth it, and I always turn the question around: what does your home smell like at seven in the evening on a weekday, and did you choose that? Almost nobody has chosen it. The smell of a home is usually a by-product of cooking, cleaning, weather and storage, and there is nothing wrong with any of that except that it varies wildly and none of it is yours in any deliberate sense.

The argument I find most persuasive is the least romantic one. A signature is a repetition mechanism. A smell attaches to a place through repeated exposure, so the value is created by staying with one fragrance, not by finding a remarkable one. This is why I would rather someone bought a restrained scent they can live with for a year than a spectacular one they will be bored of by November. One Vaayu covers 1000m³, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, and a 400ml tank lasts up to 75 days, so committing for a year is about five identical purchases.

And the honest part. A house that smells good is aired and clean first, then scented. Fragrance works alongside ventilation and cleaning, never instead of them, it cannot cover damp, cooking or a musty cupboard, and it is not an air purifier. The Vaayu also takes pure fragrance oil in its own tank, not water and not a water-based fragrance meant for misting diffusers. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original compositions, made in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Why should my home have a signature fragrance?
Because your home already smells of something and it is probably not something you chose. A single repeated fragrance gives the house a default state instead of swinging between cooking, cleaning products and nothing, makes it read as one place rather than a set of separately scented rooms, and over months becomes recognisably yours, because a smell attaches to a place only through repetition.
Is one fragrance for the whole house boring?
It is supposed to be, in the best sense. A signature works by being unremarkable to the people who live with it and immediately recognisable to everyone else. You will stop noticing it within minutes of walking in because of olfactory fatigue, which is normal and is not a sign the scent has stopped working. Resist the urge to change it, because changing it is the one thing that guarantees you never build a signature.
How much does it cost to run a signature home fragrance?
The recurring cost is fragrance oil rather than equipment. A SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) uses 5W, roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule, and its 400ml tank of pure fragrance oil lasts up to 75 days depending on intensity and run hours, so a year is about five refills of the same oil.
Will a signature fragrance make my home smell clean?
No. It will make it smell consistent, which is a different thing. A home that smells genuinely good is aired and cleaned first and scented second. Damp, a musty wardrobe, pet odour and cooking that has soaked into soft furnishings all need ventilation, cleaning or time, and fragrance layered over an unclean smell gives you both at once. Fragrance is not an air purifier and makes no health claim.
Are SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances the scents used by particular hotels?
SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original compositions. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group, and we do not reproduce any hotel's proprietary scent. They are composed in that style of scenting: restrained, base-weighted and built to hold at a low level all day rather than to impress in the first thirty seconds.
