The assumption buried in this question is that an open window ventilates a room. It does not. An open window is a hole; ventilation is a flow, and a flow needs two things a single hole cannot provide — a way in and a way out. Leave one window open all afternoon in a 1BHK and the air within reach of the frame will turn over quite happily while the air in the rest of the flat sits exactly where it was. That is why you can stand at the window in a pleasant breeze and still walk into a closed smell four steps away.

Why does my 1BHK still smell closed even though I keep the windows open?
1. Because there is no outlet. Air will not leave a room unless something takes its place. With a single opening, the only exchange happening is a slow shuffle at the plane of the window itself — some air wandering out at one edge of the frame while a similar amount wanders in at the other. The body of air behind it does not participate. Open a second opening on a different wall and the whole volume starts moving in one direction.

2. Because there is no height difference either. Warm air rises. A room ventilates far better when the incoming air can enter low and the warm, loaded air can leave high — that is the stack effect, and it works even on a still day when there is no wind at all. A single window in the middle of one wall gives you no inlet and no outlet, just one opening doing both jobs badly. A ventilator above the door, a high window or an exhaust fan near the ceiling is worth more than a large window at chest height.

3. Because your flat may be single-aspect. A great many compact flats have every window on the same face of the building. There is no cross-draught available, no matter how many of them you open, because they are all at the same pressure. In that case you have to create the pressure difference yourself — a fan in a window blowing outwards, or the kitchen chimney or bathroom exhaust running with the door to that room open.

4. Because the internal doors are closed. Even with a proper cross-draught available, air takes the shortest path it can find. A shut bedroom door means the bedroom is not being ventilated at all while the living room is. Open the internal doors during the purge, and if a door will not stay open, wedge it — a door swinging shut in the draught it created is the commonest reason a ten-minute airing achieves five minutes of work.

Why an open window on its own achieves so little

Ventilation is not a property of a window; it is a property of a path. Air moves through a building when there is a pressure difference between two points, and the two things that generate that difference in an ordinary flat are wind acting on opposite faces and buoyancy — warm air rising and leaving through a high opening while cooler air is drawn in through a low one. A single opening cancels both. There is no opposite face for the wind to push against, and there is no high exit for the warm air to take, so the same window has to serve as inlet and outlet simultaneously. What you get is a slow shuffle at the window plane and almost nothing behind it. This is exactly why the corner behind the sofa, the far end of the passage and the inside of a wardrobe can smell closed in a flat that has had a window open since morning.

For a flat with every window on one side
If your 1BHK is single-aspect, there is no cross-draught to find and no amount of opening windows will produce one. The fix is to build the difference mechanically. Put a pedestal or table fan in one window facing outwards — that pushes air out of the flat and pulls the rest of the room's air along behind it, drawing replacement air in through every other opening. Blowing inwards does the opposite and mostly stirs the same air around. The kitchen chimney and the bathroom exhaust fan are also outlets: run them with those doors open and a window open elsewhere and you have manufactured a path. On a still, hot afternoon this is more reliable than waiting for wind that is not coming.
Direction matters: a fan blowing outwards ventilates. A fan blowing inwards mostly just makes you feel cooler.

The stack effect and the ventilator you ignored
Older Indian flats often have a small ventilator or louvre high above the window or door, and newer ones have an exhaust point near the ceiling in the kitchen and bathroom. These are worth far more than their size suggests, because warm, loaded air collects at the top of a room. Open a low window as the inlet and let the high opening be the outlet and the flat will ventilate on buoyancy alone, with no wind at all. If your ventilators have been painted shut, boxed in by a false ceiling or blocked by an air-conditioner sleeve, you have lost the most useful opening in the room. It is also worth checking that mosquito mesh is clean — a greasy, dust-clogged mesh in a kitchen window reduces flow dramatically and nobody ever looks at it.

Judge the result by standing in the middle of the flat, not at the window. If nothing is moving where you stand, the path is not open.

This is the one where I most often end a conversation by telling someone to buy nothing. Somebody writes in convinced their flat needs a stronger fragrance, and three questions later it turns out every window in the place faces the same courtyard and the ventilator above the bedroom door was sealed when the false ceiling went in. The other thing I have learned to ask is which way the fan is pointing. Almost everyone puts a fan in a window facing into the room, because it feels like it is bringing fresh air in. When you do get to fragrance, size it honestly.
