You have seen oud priced at a few hundred rupees and oud priced like a piece of jewellery, and reasonably wondered what on earth accounts for the gap. It is not marketing smoke. There are real, explainable reasons, and once you know them you can spend your money exactly where it matters to you.
Because rare wild agarwood is one of the costliest materials on earth, while cultivated and modern accord ouds cost far less — plus grade and concentration. For a refined modern oud at a fair price, buy Nawaab, from ₹399.
Reason one: what the oud actually is
This is the big one. The word "oud" on a label can point to wildly different things, and the material is where most of the price lives.
Wild-harvested agarwood oil is the aristocrat. Genuine resin forms in only a fraction of wild Aquilaria trees, slowly, over years, often after a chance infection. Distilling it yields tiny quantities of oil, which is why it is one of the most expensive raw materials in all of perfumery, sold by the gram. Cultivated agarwood, where trees are grown and deliberately inoculated, is far more available and much more affordable, and it is what makes wearable natural oud possible at all. And a modern oud accord or synthetic oud recreates the woody, resinous character using aroma materials, so it is consistent, clean and inexpensive by comparison.
| Type of oud | Roughly what it does to the price |
|---|---|
| Wild-harvested agarwood oil | Highest — rare, slow-forming, sold by the gram |
| Cultivated agarwood oil | Mid — farmed and inoculated, far more available |
| Modern oud accord / synthetic | Lowest — consistent, clean, affordable to compose |
Reason two: grade
Even within real agarwood, quality is graded. The darkest, densest, most resin-saturated wood — the pieces that sink in water — command the highest prices, while lighter, less resinous wood costs less. Age matters too: oil that has been rested and matured for years is smoother and dearer than a fresh, sharp distillation. So two "real oud" perfumes can still sit far apart on price purely because of grade and maturity.
Reason three: concentration
Finally, how much of that oud is actually in the bottle. A fragrance where oud is the dominant material, carried at high concentration, costs more to make than one where a little oud sits inside a larger woody blend. This is also why a tiny vial of pure oud oil can cost more than a large bottle of an oud-themed perfume — you are paying for concentration of the expensive thing.
Where SOSA sits, and why I am glad to tell you
Let me be completely transparent, because this is exactly the article for it. SOSA does not sell rare wild-distilled agarwood oil. My Nawaab is a modern, refined oud composition — the clean, wearable style — built around a white royal oud character with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. That is precisely why it can smell rich and expensive and still cost ₹399 for 3ml. You are getting the elegance and the depth of oud without paying the raw-material premium of a connoisseur’s wild distillation. For almost everyone, that is the smart place to spend.

If you want oud gentler still, Ameeri tucks a soft oudh under Taif rose and Indian sandalwood. And if you are nervous about spending on a scent family you have not lived with, the Attar Trio is the sensible first purchase — three scents to try before you pick a favourite.

Do not start at the top. Rare wild ouds are magnificent, but they are expensive and often raw, smoky or animalic in ways that can genuinely put off a newcomer. Begin with a clean modern oud, wear it for a season, and learn what you love. If you become devoted to the family, then, and only then, is it worth chasing a rare distillation. Remember too that these attars sit close to the skin and last 8 to 10 hours or more, so a 3ml goes a long way.
