Open air steals fragrance — so you scent the sheltered corner and the still evening, not the whole sky. On a balcony, where you put the diffuser decides almost everything. The same reed that feels invisible on the railing can perfume a chair three feet away, if you place it right.

I get this question more than almost any other about balconies, and the honest starting point is uncomfortable: on a truly open, breezy balcony, no placement — and no machine — will hold a scent in the air. Fragrance is just molecules drifting on air, and moving air carries them away faster than any diffuser can replace them. So before we talk about spots, set the expectation. We are not scenting the balcony. We are scenting the one sheltered pocket where you actually sit, on the still evenings when the air is calm enough to hold it. Get those two things right and the placement question answers itself.
The placement method
Five rules for placing a diffuser on a balcony
1. Find the still corner first. Stand on the balcony on a normal evening and notice where the air is calmest — usually the corner furthest from the open edge, tucked against a wall or beside the door into the house. That pocket is where scent can settle. Scent that corner, not the whole floor.
2. Put it near where you sit. Fragrance you can't reach is fragrance wasted. Place the diffuser within a metre or so of the chairs — on the side table, the plant shelf, the low stool beside the seating — so the scent is right where your nose is.
3. Work at seating height. A reed at table or armrest level drifts up to breathing height as you relax. On the floor it pools and you miss it; high on an exposed wall the breeze takes it. Aim for roughly where your face is when you're sitting.
4. Keep it off the railing and out of the rain. The railing is the single worst place — most wind, most exposure, and for an electric diffuser, most likely to get rained on. Sit the device back, under the overhang, against shelter.
5. Judge it on a calm night. Test on a still evening, not a gusty afternoon. If it works when the air is calm, it's placed correctly — the wind simply is not something any placement can beat.

If your balcony is open to the weather, a passive reed diffuser is the sensible tool — no power lead trailing outside, no mist, nothing to short in the rain. Tuck it into the most protected corner you have: against the wall behind the seating, or on a shelf under the overhang. If your balcony has a roof or deep overhang and a power point, a small Boond can add a soft, active scent to the seating corner. Placement rules are stricter here: keep it well under cover, back against the inner wall, away from any spot where rain can splash or blow in. Honest caveat: an ultrasonic adds mild humidity and needs electricity outdoors — only ever on a covered balcony, never on an open or rain-exposed one. When in doubt, a reed is the safer choice.

And remember fragrance never covers drain, traffic or smoke drifting up; reduce the source first.
