Two or three cubic metres of air, a metre from your face, with the windows up and the heater on for four months of the year. I say this to customers constantly and it still surprises people: almost every car fragrance problem I am sent is a dose problem, not a scent problem. The bottle is not weak and the oil is not wrong. The cabin simply gives fragrance nowhere to go, and winter takes away the little ventilation that was rescuing you in October.

Should I match my car fragrance to the perfume I wear?
It is the obvious idea and it usually disappoints. Running the same family in the cabin as on your skin does not produce harmony, it produces amplification - you arrive somewhere smelling of a louder version of what you chose, which is the one thing a carefully chosen fragrance does not need. It also removes the contrast that makes your own fragrance legible in the first place. The better approach is a quiet, dry, low register with no strong character, held at a level that reads as environment rather than as scent. If you wear woods and orientals, Sandalwood at Rs 479 sits agreeably underneath. If you wear fresh or citrus fragrances, Sea Breeze at Rs 509 stays out of the way. If you wear something distinctive and want the car to contribute nothing at all, Vetiver at Rs 509 held low is the most reliable answer in the range.
Is Oud a good car scent if I wear oud-based fragrances?
It can be, with two caveats worth taking seriously. SOSA's Oud at Rs 509 is naturally-derived agarwood, warm and smokeless, and it is the deepest scent in the range - SOSA positions it for evening and pre-event drives rather than as an all-day baseline, and that framing is the useful one. A heavy resinous register in a closed heated cabin is the single easiest way to overdo car fragrance, because there is almost no air exchange in winter and warm air lifts fragrance faster off the source. So if you want it, run it in the hanging format with the stopper tightened, or as one spray rather than two, and expect to reduce further once the heater has been on for a few weeks. The second caveat is the amplification point above: oud on oud rarely reads as sophisticated, it reads as a lot of oud.
How do I stop my car from making my perfume smell different?
Reduce before you replace, because level causes this far more often than character does. Tighten the adjustable stopper on the hanging bottle, or drop from two sprays to one, and give it several days before judging - your own nose adapts within minutes of getting in, so a same-day verdict is not worth much. If it persists, look at the family: sweet, gourmand and heavy white floral registers are the ones most likely to remain legible on top of what you are wearing, while dry woody, earthy and clean-airy registers tend to sit underneath. And check the sequence: if you apply your fragrance in the car, you are creating the collision at its most intense point. Applying it before you leave, so that the top notes have had a few minutes, makes the pairing considerably more forgiving.
Does an alcohol-free car fragrance behave differently next to my perfume?
It behaves differently in the cabin, which is the relevant part. SOSA's car fragrances are alcohol-free, on an oil and water-based carrier rather than ethanol, and SOSA states this means no flammability risk on a hot dashboard and no alcohol burn on spraying. In practice that also means there is no sharp ethanol top note flashing off at the moment of spraying, which is the part of a conventional spray most likely to cut across a fragrance you are wearing. What it does not do is change the basic arithmetic: a small closed cabin plus a fragrance on your skin plus a fragrance in the air is still three variables in three cubic metres, and the level in the cabin is the one you control most easily. Can I have a different car scent for evenings than for the working day?
You can, and the format architecture makes it straightforward, but do it deliberately rather than by accident. The clean way is a hanging bottle in a quiet register held low as the permanent baseline, plus a spray of something deeper used only when you want it - Oud at Rs 509, say, one spray, 15 to 30 minutes before an evening drive, never as somebody opens the door. What does not work is switching hanging bottles every few weeks: the baseline never settles, regular passengers never stop noticing it, and you lose the repetition that makes a signature a signature. Keep the background constant and let the occasional spray be the variation.
