We sell scent machines, so you would expect this page to say yes. It does not, not always. For some households the honest answer is no, or not in that room, and we would much rather you read this, buy nothing and be glad you did than sell you something that is wrong for the animals you live with.
Quick answers — read this first
Should you use a scent machine in a home with pets? Sometimes yes, carefully, and sometimes no. Animals have a far more sensitive sense of smell than people, and cats, birds and small mammals are more sensitive again than dogs, with birds in particular having highly sensitive respiratory systems. If you live with a bird, the sensible default is not to run airborne fragrance in the house at all. If you have a cat, a rabbit or another small mammal, ask your vet first and be prepared for the answer to be no. If the animal has nowhere unscented it can walk to, the answer is no. If the machine cannot be kept out of reach and out of the room the animal sleeps in, the answer is no. And if the smell you are trying to fix is coming from unwashed bedding or an untreated accident, no machine will solve it. SOSA makes no claim that any product is pet-safe.

Are diffusers bad for dogs and cats? We are not in a position to tell you a product is safe or unsafe for your animal, and we would be careful of any fragrance brand that claimed either. What we can tell you is that animals experience smell on a scale we do not, that cats, birds and small mammals are more sensitive than dogs, that birds have highly sensitive respiratory systems and many keepers avoid airborne fragrance entirely, and that the right person to ask about your animal is your vet. If you do run fragrance, keep it out of reach and out of the sleeping room, run it lightly, leave an unscented room open, never scent a space the animal cannot leave, and stop immediately at any sign of a reaction.

What are the signs that a pet is reacting to a fragrance? Sneezing, coughing, drooling, hiding, pawing at the face or nose, compulsive licking, watery eyes, any change in breathing, and any change in normal behaviour you cannot otherwise explain. If you see any of them, switch the machine off, open the space up and let it air out thoroughly. Do not try a lower setting to see whether it helps and do not assume the animal will get used to it. Speak to your vet and tell them what was being diffused, where the machine was and how long it had been running. For birds especially, treat any respiratory sign as urgent.
The short answer
Short answer: sometimes yes, carefully, and sometimes no. If you live with a bird, the sensible default is no airborne fragrance in the house at all. With a cat, a rabbit or another small mammal, ask your vet first and be ready for the answer to be no. If the animal cannot always walk to an unscented room, if the machine cannot be kept out of reach and out of the sleeping room, or if you would not stop at the first sign of a reaction, then the answer is no for your household - and that is a perfectly good outcome.
The pick: if the answer is yes, one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), wall mounted out of reach on the main air path, at the lowest useful setting, in short scheduled runs, never in the room the animal sleeps in, with whole rooms left unscented. We make no claim that it is pet-safe, and for some households the honest answer is no, or not in that room.
Next step: tell us which animals you live with and how your home is laid out and we will give you a straight answer, including no - ask us what fits your home.
Deciding whether to run a scent machine in a home with animals1. Is the smell actually a source problem? Then fix that, not this2. Which animals? Birds, cats and small mammals need a vet's view3. Can the animal always walk to an unscented room? If not, no4. Can the machine be kept out of reach and out of the sleeping room?5. Will you stop at the first sign of a reaction? That has to be a yes
We sell scent machines and we would still rather you did not buy one than have it be the wrong thing for the animals you live with. Work down these five questions honestly. If the answer to any of the last three is no, then for your household the answer is no, or not in that room, and that is a perfectly good outcome.

Straight answer
Should I run a scent machine in a house with animals in it?
Start by ruling out the case where the question does not apply. If your house smells of pet, a machine is not the answer to that at any setting, because And the line we will not soften: fragrance does not remove odour molecules, it adds fragrance molecules alongside them. Diffusing a scent does not break down, neutralise, capture or cancel anything a dog or a litter tray has put into a room. Run a machine over an unwashed dog bed and you get dog and fragrance at once, which is worse than either on its own, because the nose stops reading two smells and starts reading one confusing new one. Fragrance is the finish on a room that is already clean. It is never a substitute for the laundry, and any brand that suggests otherwise is overselling. So if the bed cover is three weeks old, the sofa throw has never been washed, the rug has never been cleaned or an old accident was treated with an ordinary floor cleaner, deal with those first and the question may disappear entirely. Now the part that matters more than anything else on this page, and we would rather lose a sale than get it wrong. We do not claim that any SOSA product is pet-safe, non-toxic or safe around animals, and we would be careful of any fragrance brand that does. What we can give you is how to be careful. An animal's sense of smell is not a slightly better version of ours, it is on an entirely different scale, so a level of fragrance you would call subtle can be a great deal more than subtle to a dog lying at floor level all day. Cats, birds and small mammals are more sensitive again than dogs, and birds in particular have highly sensitive respiratory systems - a bird's respiratory system is unusually efficient at extracting whatever is in the air, and many experienced bird keepers avoid airborne fragrance in the house altogether. If you are unsure, and especially if you live with a cat, a bird, a rabbit or any small mammal, ask your vet before you scent a shared space. That is not a disclaimer. It is genuinely the right order of operations. So work down the questions honestly. Which animals do you live with? With a bird in the house, the sensible default is not to run airborne fragrance at all, and that is the answer we would give a friend. With a cat, a rabbit, a guinea pig, a hamster or any other small mammal, ask your vet first, and be genuinely prepared for the answer to be no. With a dog, ask your vet if the dog is very young, very old, brachycephalic, or has any respiratory or skin condition. Can the animal always walk to an unscented room? If your home is a single room, a studio or a small flat where every space carries the fragrance, the answer is no, because the animal must always be able to move away. Can the machine be kept out of reach and out of the room the animal sleeps in? If the only place to put it is on the floor beside the dog bed, the answer is no. Will you actually stop at the first sign of a reaction? That has to be a yes, and it has to be a real one. The practical rules, and they are not optional. Keep the machine physically out of the animal's reach, wall mounted or high on a shelf, never at floor level where a dog can knock it over or a cat can investigate the tank. Keep it out of the room the animal sleeps in. Scent lightly rather than heavily, at the lowest setting that does anything at all, and in short scheduled runs rather than continuously. Always leave the animal a route to an unscented room, and check the route is genuinely open rather than theoretically open. Never scent a space the animal cannot leave: not a crate, not a closed utility room, not a balcony it is shut out on, not a carrier, not a bathroom with the door shut. And watch the animal rather than the machine. If it sneezes, coughs, drools, hides, paws at its face, licks compulsively, or simply changes its behaviour in a way you cannot otherwise explain, stop immediately, switch the machine off and air the room out. Do not experiment further, and speak to your vet. If all of that lands on yes, then a machine can be run responsibly in a pet home: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), waterless, rated to 1000m³, wall mounted well out of reach on the main air path, at the lowest useful setting, in short scheduled runs, with the sleeping room and at least one other room left completely unscented. There is one practical reason the format matters in a home with animals, and it is worth saying plainly because it is a real advantage rather than a marketing line. The Vaayu is waterless and it can be wall mounted, so it does not need to stand on the floor or on a low table where a dog's tail can send it over or a cat can get to the tank. Mounted on a wall, above reach, it stays where you put it. Being waterless also means there is no standing water in a tank at nose height and nothing damp landing on dog beds, rugs or a wooden floor. It has an auto-stop and a key-lock, which was designed for public spaces and turns out to be equally useful in a house where somebody could nudge the settings. None of that makes it safe around animals, and we are not saying it does. It makes it easier to keep out of their way, which is a different and more honest claim. One line worth being clear about: a fragrance machine is a fragrance machine. It is not an air purifier. It does not filter, disinfect, dehumidify or remove anything from the air, and it makes no health claim of any kind, for people or for animals. And if it lands on no, that is a good outcome and not a failed sale. Tell us about your household and we will give you a straight answer, including no.
Sometimes yes, carefully. Sometimes no. Birds are a default no. Cats, rabbits and small mammals need a vet's view first. If the animal cannot walk to an unscented room, or the machine cannot be kept out of reach and out of the sleeping room, the answer is no for your household.
If the answer for your household is yes, this is what responsible looks like: one SOSA Vaayu, wall mounted out of reach, on the lowest useful setting, in short scheduled runs, never in the room the animal sleeps in, with rooms left unscented. Rated to 1000m³, under 38dB, waterless. We make no claim that it is pet-safe.

The three questions to answer before you decide

Three questions decide it, and the second one is the one people skip.

1
Is it actually a fragrance question?
If the house smells of pet, the answer is laundry, not a machine
Most people arrive at this question because something smells, and that is precisely the situation in which a machine is the wrong purchase. Fragrance does not remove odour molecules, it adds fragrance molecules alongside them, so running a machine over an unwashed pet bed gives you both smells at once and usually reads worse than either alone. Before you think about a machine at all, work through the source: pet bed covers washed weekly and inner cushions washed or replaced, sofa throws every three or four days, accidents re-treated with an enzymatic cleaner rather than an ordinary or ammonia-based one, litter scooped at least daily with a full change on a fixed day, coats brushed and properly dried after a bath or rain, rugs vacuumed often and professionally cleaned about once a year, and curtains and cushion cores dealt with at least occasionally. If a persistent smell survives all of that, the next stop is a vet rather than a shop, because ears, teeth and skin are common sources. Very often the question of whether to buy a machine simply dissolves at this stage, and that is a good outcome.
Tip: if you are considering a machine because something smells, the answer is almost certainly not a machine.

2
Which animals do you live with?
Birds, cats and small mammals change the answer, and your vet decides it
This is the question people skip, and it matters more than the rest of the page. Animals do not experience smell as a slightly stronger version of what we experience; the scale is entirely different, and a level of fragrance you would call barely-there can be a great deal more than that to an animal lying on the floor all day. Beyond that, sensitivity varies by species. Cats, birds and small mammals are more sensitive than dogs. Birds in particular have highly sensitive respiratory systems, unusually efficient at extracting whatever is in the air, and many experienced bird keepers avoid airborne fragrance in the house entirely; if you live with a bird, treat no fragrance as the default. With a cat, a rabbit, a guinea pig, a hamster or any other small mammal, ask your vet before you scent a shared space, and be genuinely prepared for the answer to be no. With a dog, ask your vet if the dog is very young or very old, is a flat-faced breed, or has any respiratory, skin or allergic condition. We are a fragrance company and we are not qualified to make that call for your animal. Your vet is, and asking costs you nothing.
SOSA Vaayu
We make no claim that the Vaayu or any SOSA product is pet-safe, non-toxic or safe around animals.

3
Can you run it properly?
Out of reach, out of the sleeping room, an unscented route, and a real willingness to stop
Four practical conditions, and if you cannot meet all four then the answer for your household is no. First, can the machine be kept physically out of the animal's reach, wall mounted or high on a shelf rather than at floor level where a dog can knock it over or a cat can investigate the tank. Second, can it be kept out of the room the animal sleeps in, and away from beds, bowls, crates and litter trays. Third, is there always a genuinely open route to a room with no fragrance in it at all, so the animal can move away whenever it chooses. In a single room, a studio or a small flat where the scent reaches everywhere, that condition cannot be met, and the honest answer is no. Fourth, will you actually stop at the first sign of a reaction rather than adjusting the setting and hoping. Sneezing, coughing, drooling, hiding, pawing at the face, compulsive licking, watery eyes, changed breathing or any unexplained change in behaviour means switch it off, air the space out and call your vet. Add to those: scent lightly rather than heavily, run short scheduled bursts rather than continuously, and never scent a crate, a carrier, a closed utility room or a balcony an animal is shut on.
Tip: if there is nowhere in your home an animal can go to be away from the fragrance, the answer is no.

The SOSA principle
We would rather you read this page, buy nothing and feel confident in that decision than sell you a machine that is wrong for the animals you live with.
For some households the honest answer is no, or not in that room. That is a good outcome, and it is the one we would give a friend.

Where the answer is yes, where it is qualified, and where it is no

Here is the decision as a table, written the way we would say it to someone standing in front of us.

The SOSA plan
Where the answer is yes, where it is qualified, and where it is no
What you are actually dealing with What fixes it
A home with a bird
Our answer is no by default. Birds have highly sensitive respiratory systems and many experienced keepers avoid airborne fragrance in the house entirely. If you want to explore it at all, that conversation belongs with an avian vet, not with us.
A home with a cat, rabbit, guinea pig or other small mammal
Ask your vet first, and be prepared for the answer to be no. These species are more sensitive than dogs. Nothing near the litter tray or the hutch, and nothing in any space the animal cannot leave.
A studio, a single room or a small flat with any animal in it
No. The animal must always be able to walk to a room with no fragrance in it, and in a home where the scent reaches everywhere that condition cannot be met.
SOSA VaayuA larger home with a healthy dog, where the machine can be kept high and out of the sleeping room
A qualified yes. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) on the main air path, wall mounted out of reach, lowest useful setting, short runs, rooms left unscented, and stop at the first sign of a reaction. Still not claimed to be pet-safe. View →

If the answer for your household is yes and you want the detail on how to run it well, the best home fragrance approach for pet owners covers quantity, format and profile. If it is no, the pages that will actually help you are how to keep your house smelling good when you have a dog and why your house still smells of dog after cleaning, both of which are about source control and cost nothing to follow. And the general question is answered in why your house doesn't smell fresh even after cleaning. If you have specific questions about our machine before deciding, what pet owners should consider before using SOSA Vaayu is the product-specific version of this page.

SOSA Vaayu
One source instead of several: SOSA Vaayu is rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - so one machine covers a floor and more rooms can be left unscented. ₹11,999.
If the answer is yes - one machine, high, low and scheduled.
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 covers 1000m³, wall mounts out of reach, runs under 38dB and stops instantly from the app. We make no claim that it is pet-safe.

The rules, in full, and they matter more than the specification. We make no claim that any SOSA product is pet-safe, non-toxic or safe around animals. Animals have a far more sensitive sense of smell than people; cats, birds and small mammals are more sensitive than dogs; birds in particular have highly sensitive respiratory systems. Keep the machine physically out of the animal's reach and out of the room it sleeps in. Scent lightly rather than heavily. Always leave the animal a genuinely open route to an unscented room. Never scent a space the animal cannot leave, such as a crate, a closed utility room or a balcony it is shut on. Stop immediately if the animal sneezes, coughs, drools, hides, paws at its face, licks compulsively or changes its behaviour, air the space out and speak to your vet. And if you are unsure at any point, ask your vet before you scent a shared space. And the line we will not soften: fragrance does not remove odour molecules, it adds fragrance molecules alongside them. A note from Sonal

I am aware of how this page reads coming from someone who sells scent machines. I would still rather write it. The animals in your home experience smell on a scale I genuinely cannot imagine, and a level I would describe as barely there is not necessarily barely there to a dog lying on the floor, let alone to a cat or a bird. So the responsible position for a fragrance company is not to reassure you. It is to tell you what we know, tell you what we do not, and send you to your vet for the part that is theirs.

What we know: fragrance does not remove pet odour, so if something smells the answer is laundry. Animals are far more sensitive than we are, and cats, birds and small mammals more so than dogs. Birds have highly sensitive respiratory systems and, in a home with a bird, my own answer would be not to run airborne fragrance at all. What we do not know is anything about your particular animal, its age, its breathing or its history, and that is exactly why the vet question is not a formality.

If you do go ahead: one Vaayu, mounted high and out of reach, on the lowest useful setting, in short runs, never in the room the animal sleeps in, with a room left with nothing running in it and the door open. Stop at the first sneeze, the first hiding, the first behaviour you cannot explain. And if any of that is not possible in your home, then the answer is no, or not in that room, and I would tell a friend exactly the same thing. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should you use a scent machine in a home with pets?
Sometimes yes, carefully, and sometimes no. Animals have a far more sensitive sense of smell than people, and cats, birds and small mammals are more sensitive again than dogs, with birds in particular having highly sensitive respiratory systems. If you live with a bird, the sensible default is no airborne fragrance in the house at all. With a cat, a rabbit or another small mammal, ask your vet first and be prepared for the answer to be no. If the animal cannot always walk to an unscented room, if the machine cannot be kept out of reach and out of the room it sleeps in, or if the smell you are trying to fix is really an unwashed bed or an untreated accident, then the answer is no.
Is a SOSA scent machine pet-safe?
We do not claim it is, and we would not trust a fragrance brand that made that claim about any product. Animals have a far more sensitive sense of smell than we do, and cats, birds and small mammals are more sensitive again than dogs, with birds in particular having highly sensitive respiratory systems. If you are unsure, ask your vet before you scent a space you share with an animal, and especially so for a bird, a cat, a rabbit or any small mammal. If you do scent a home with pets, keep the machine physically out of the animal's reach and out of the room it sleeps in, run it lightly rather than heavily, always leave the animal an open route to an unscented room, and never scent a space it cannot leave, such as a crate, a closed utility room or a balcony it is shut out on.
When is the honest answer no?
Sometimes, and it is an honest answer rather than a modest one. If you live with a bird, the sensible default is not to run airborne fragrance in the house at all. If you have a cat, a rabbit or another small mammal, ask your vet first and be prepared for the answer to be no. If your home is a single room or a small flat where the animal has nowhere unscented to go, that is a no as well, because the animal must always be able to move away from the fragrance. If the animal has a respiratory or skin condition, ask your vet. And if the smell you are trying to fix is coming from an unwashed bed, an un-scooped tray or an untreated accident, no machine is the answer to that.
What should I do if my pet reacts to the fragrance?
Stop immediately. Switch the machine off, open the space up and let it air out thoroughly. The signs to watch for are sneezing, coughing, drooling, hiding, pawing at the face or nose, compulsive licking, watery eyes, any change in breathing, and any change in normal behaviour you cannot otherwise explain. Do not try a lower setting to see whether it helps, and do not assume the animal will get used to it. Speak to your vet, and mention what was being diffused, where the machine was and how long it ran. For birds especially, treat any respiratory sign as urgent.
Will a scent machine get rid of pet smell in my house?
No. Fragrance adds scent alongside an odour, it does not remove it. Nothing about diffusing a fragrance breaks down, neutralises or captures the compounds a dog or a litter tray has put into a room, so a scented room with an unwashed dog bed in it smells of both at once, which is usually worse than either on its own. Washing bedding, cleaning accidents with an enzymatic cleaner, grooming, drying a wet coat and vacuuming soft flooring are what remove pet odour. Fragrance is the finish on a room that is already clean.

Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Facts verified 24 August 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with a 400ml refillable tank lasting up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and onboard button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, operation under 38dB, DC 12V/1A at 5W, dimensions 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification. It uses no water and no heat, so it adds no dampness and leaves no residue. It is a fragrance machine and not an air purifier: it adds fragrance and does not remove odour. SOSA makes no claim that this or any other SOSA product is pet-safe, non-toxic or safe around animals; animals have a far more sensitive sense of smell than people, cats, birds and small mammals are more sensitive than dogs, birds in particular have highly sensitive respiratory systems, and anyone unsure should consult a veterinarian before scenting a shared space. Scent enhances the ambience and perceived quality of a space; it works alongside proper ventilation and cleaning and is not a substitute for either, and SOSA makes no claim that fragrance alone influences a purchase decision. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
