I want an everyday attar for grocery shopping, cafes and short outings: which fragrance families are versatile without being overwhelming?

I want an everyday attar for grocery shopping, cafes and short outings: which fragrance families are versatile without being overwhelming?

SOSA Founder Diaries · Safar ownership

Two honest refusals first, because both of them save you from a page that would have made something up. There is no fragrance family label on any of the four attar pages, and no occasion line in the range names a cafe, an errand or a short outing. What the pages do publish is more specific than a family would be, and it is enough to answer you properly.

By Sonal Sahani, founder and perfumer · 9 minute read · SOSA Home & Body, Pune

Published: three-tier pyramids, mood lines, occasion lines, gender lines, strength figures Adaa 8.5, Ameeri 9.0, Mastani 9.2, Nawaab 9.5, and a wear time of 6 to 8 hours on skin. Adaa Rs 379 / Rs 669 / Rs 1,149, 4.9 from 98 published customer reviews. Not published: a family label, or an errand on any occasion line.

Answer in brief

  • Which fragrance family is best for everyday wear? No family is published, so none can be named. The attar pages carry no fragrance family label of the kind the car fragrance pages carry. What they publish instead is a three-tier pyramid, a mood line, a gender line, an occasion line, a self-assigned strength figure and a wear time. For an everyday brief the published figure that speaks to it is Adaa's strength of 8.5, the lightest of the four, at ₹379 for 3ml.
  • Is there a SOSA attar made for errands and cafes? No occasion line in this range names a gym, a yoga class, a wellness studio, a cafe or an errand. The closest the record comes is Adaa's line, and what Adaa's line actually names is office hours, business lunches, daytime weddings, meetings and summer wear, which is an office line and a summer line rather than anything to do with exercise. Adaa is the nearest published line and it is a weekday line, so take it as that rather than as an endorsement of your Saturday.
  • What makes one versatile? The published handles are the pyramid, the mood line, the occasion line, the strength figure and the wear time. All four publish the same wear time, 6 to 8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and nothing beyond that figure is published. Adaa's published strength figure is 8.5, the lightest end of the range.

The short answer

There is no fragrance family to name, because none of the four SOSA attar pages carries a family label. There is also no occasion line in the range naming a cafe, an errand or a short outing; Adaa's, the closest, names office hours, business lunches, daytime weddings, meetings and summer wear. For an everyday brief the published handles are the strength figures - Adaa 8.5, Ameeri 9.0, Mastani 9.2, Nawaab 9.5 - and a wear time of 6 to 8 hours on skin. Adaa is Rs 379 for 3ml with 4.9 from 98 published customer reviews.

The honest gap: versatile and overwhelming are both words about other people, and SOSA publishes no projection figure and no sillage figure for any attar. So the page can give you the composition and the score and the wear time, and it cannot give you the effect on a stranger in a queue.

On this page

  1. Two gaps, and the six fields that fill them
  2. Your three words, set against what the pages carry
  3. Four reads, for an ordinary week
  4. Adaa's published pyramid, field by field
  5. Questions people ask

I want an everyday attar for grocery shopping, cafes and short outings. Which fragrance families are versatile without being overwhelming?

Let me clear two things out of the way, because both of them are the kind of gap a page can paper over without you noticing. The attar pages carry no fragrance family label of the kind the car fragrance pages carry. What they publish instead is a three-tier pyramid, a mood line, a gender line, an occasion line, a self-assigned strength figure and a wear time. So when you ask which family, there is nothing on any of the four pages for me to read out, and if I named one it would be my invention wearing SOSA's clothes. That is the second gap, and it is worth saying because your three examples - a grocery run, a cafe, a short outing - are the ordinary texture of a week and the record simply does not address them. Now for what is published, which does more work for you than a family label would have done. Every page carries a three-tier pyramid, a mood line, a gender line, an occasion line, a self-assigned strength figure and a wear time. Six fields, all checkable, all specific to one bottle. Start with the strength figures, since your word was overwhelming. The strength figures are SOSA's own self-assigned scores out of ten, on a scale SOSA invented and nobody else uses: Adaa 8.5, Ameeri 9.0, Mastani 9.2 and Nawaab 9.5. Read those four together and notice how narrow the band is. One point separates the lightest published figure from the deepest, and there is nothing in the range that SOSA scores below 8.5, so no bottle here is published as a faint one. Adaa's published strength figure is 8.5, the lightest end of the range. If you want the lightest published figure in the range, that is the one, and here is what is in it. Adaa publishes Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli in its opening, jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang in its heart, and white musk, vetiver and cedarwood in its base. Adaa's mood line reads light, elegant, composed, distinctive without being loud. Adaa publishes its gender line as unisex, and the most genuinely gender-fluid attar in the range. It is ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml. Adaa carries 4.9 from 98 published customer reviews. Those are customer reviews Sonal collated over WhatsApp, which is why I quote the count beside the figure rather than the figure on its own. Adaa publishes its occasion line as office hours, business lunches, daytime weddings, meetings and summer wear. Read that line carefully, because it is the closest thing in the range to an everyday endorsement and it is still an office line. Business lunches and meetings are not a grocery run. I am quoting it as the nearest match rather than as a match. Next, your word versatile, which has a published answer of a kind. All four publish the same wear time, 6 to 8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and nothing beyond that figure is published. A single wear time on all four means the range does not distinguish a short-outing bottle from a long-evening one on duration, so versatility in this range is not about how long a bottle lasts. It is about which pyramid you want on you, and there are four of them. Ameeri publishes Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot in its opening, Taif rose and Indian sandalwood in its heart, and soft oudh, amber and white musk in its base. Ameeri publishes its occasion line as Diwali, Eid, Karwa Chauth, family weddings and festive dinners. Ameeri's published strength figure is 9.0, the festive warm middle of the range. It is ₹385 for 3ml. Ameeri carries 4.9 from 104 published customer reviews. Mastani publishes litchi, bergamot and pink pepper in its opening, night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose in its heart, and Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean in its base. Mastani publishes its occasion line as anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions and signature wear. Mastani's published strength figure is 9.2, the sensual depth end of the range. It is ₹389 for 3ml. Mastani carries 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews. Nawaab publishes Kashmir saffron, black pepper and cardamom in its opening, white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and aged tobacco leaf in its heart, and amber, leather and white musk in its base. Nawaab publishes its occasion line as weddings, boardrooms, important evenings and signature wear. Nawaab's published strength figure is 9.5, the deepest in the SOSA attar range. It is ₹399 for 3ml. Nawaab carries 4.9 from 86 published customer reviews. Finally the word I cannot help you with at all, and it is the one hiding inside overwhelming. SOSA publishes no projection figure and no sillage figure for any attar, and that gap cuts in both directions at once. I cannot tell you that one of these attars will be noticed across the room, and I cannot tell you that it will not be noticed across the room either, because neither sentence has a figure behind it. What you do control is published: All four are the same format: a concentrated oil attar with a built-in dab applicator, carried in sandalwood oil and jojoba, alcohol-free and DPG-free. The quantity is entirely yours. Every attar is sold in three sizes. The 3ml bottles run ₹379 to ₹399, the 6ml bottles ₹669 to ₹699, and the 12ml bottles ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. If you want to find out what the lightest published figure is like on you before committing, the 3ml at ₹379 is the smallest bottle in the range. Sonal Sahani trained at ISIPCA, Versailles, she designs all four attars herself, and she signs off every small batch by hand in Pune. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

In one line: No family label exists on any of the four pages, and no occasion line names a cafe or an errand. The published handles are the four strength figures and a wear time of 6 to 8 hours. Adaa is the lightest at 8.5, Rs 379 for 3ml, with 4.9 from 98 published customer reviews.

Two gaps, and the six fields that fill them

Neither a fragrance family nor an everyday occasion line exists in this range. What exists instead is six published fields per bottle, and they answer your question better than a family would have.

1

The family label - not printed on any of the four pages

The attar pages carry no fragrance family label of the kind the car fragrance pages carry. What they publish instead is a three-tier pyramid, a mood line, a gender line, an occasion line, a self-assigned strength figure and a wear time. It is worth being blunt about why this matters. If I told you the fresh family was your answer, you would have nothing on a product page to check that against, and the sentence would have exactly as much standing as a guess. The six published fields have standing, because you can read them yourself on the page before you buy.

No family to quote, so this page quotes tiers and figures instead.

2

The occasion line - nothing in the range names an errand

No occasion line in this range names a gym, a yoga class, a wellness studio, a cafe or an errand. The closest the record comes is Adaa's line, and what Adaa's line actually names is office hours, business lunches, daytime weddings, meetings and summer wear, which is an office line and a summer line rather than anything to do with exercise. Adaa publishes its occasion line as office hours, business lunches, daytime weddings, meetings and summer wear. Ameeri publishes its occasion line as Diwali, Eid, Karwa Chauth, family weddings and festive dinners. Mastani publishes its occasion line as anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions and signature wear. Nawaab publishes its occasion line as weddings, boardrooms, important evenings and signature wear. Four lines, between them naming an office, a festival, an anniversary and a boardroom, and not one of them naming the ordinary week you described. Adaa's is the nearest, and I am quoting it as a weekday line rather than stretching it over a Saturday.

3

Overwhelming - a score and a wear time, and then the gap

The strength figures are SOSA's own self-assigned scores out of ten, on a scale SOSA invented and nobody else uses: Adaa 8.5, Ameeri 9.0, Mastani 9.2 and Nawaab 9.5. Read those four together and notice how narrow the band is. One point separates the lightest published figure from the deepest, and there is nothing in the range that SOSA scores below 8.5, so no bottle here is published as a faint one. Adaa's published strength figure is 8.5, the lightest end of the range. All four publish the same wear time, 6 to 8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and nothing beyond that figure is published. Those two figures are the whole published answer to your word, and they are both about the bottle rather than about the room. SOSA publishes no projection figure and no sillage figure for any attar, and that gap cuts in both directions at once. I cannot tell you that one of these attars will be noticed across the room, and I cannot tell you that it will not be noticed across the room either, because neither sentence has a figure behind it. Adaa carries 4.9 from 98 published customer reviews.

Adaa 8.5 at ₹379 for 3ml. The lightest published figure.

No attar page in this range carries a fragrance family label, and no occasion line names an errand. Six published fields per bottle are a better answer than either would have been.

Pyramid, mood, gender, occasion, strength, wear time

SOSA Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani Combo (Pack of 3)
SOSA Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani Combo (Pack of 3)

Adaa's published pyramid, field by field

Adaa publishes its opening as Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli, labelled a clean lifted opening. It publishes its heart as jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, labelled soft white florals. It publishes its base as white musk, vetiver and cedarwood, labelled a clean composure drydown. Adaa's mood line reads light, elegant, composed, distinctive without being loud. Adaa publishes its occasion line as office hours, business lunches, daytime weddings, meetings and summer wear. Adaa publishes its gender line as unisex, and the most genuinely gender-fluid attar in the range. Adaa's published strength figure is 8.5, the lightest end of the range. It is ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml. Adaa carries 4.9 from 98 published customer reviews. Six fields, one bottle, every one of them printed where you can check it. That is what the range gives you in place of a family label, and for an everyday question it is the better trade.

Adaa 3ml is ₹379 and the 12ml is ₹1,149, which is the whole arithmetic once the bottle is settled.

Your three words, set against what the pages carry

What you are deciding What is actually published
A fragrance family Nothing. None of the four attar pages carries a family label of the kind the car fragrance pages carry, so there is none to quote and this page will not invent one. The pyramid and the mood line replace it.
Everyday, errands and cafes No occasion line names any of them. Adaa's names office hours, business lunches, daytime weddings, meetings and summer wear, which is the nearest published line and is still a weekday one. 3ml ₹379.
Versatile Partly published. All four share one wear time, 6 to 8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, so the range does not separate a short-outing bottle from a long one on duration at all.
Without being overwhelming Published only as a self-assigned score out of ten: Adaa 8.5, Ameeri 9.0, Mastani 9.2, Nawaab 9.5. No projection or sillage figure exists, so the effect on anyone else has no published answer.

The three heavier published figures are worth meeting properly, because an everyday reader should rule them in or out on printed words. Ameeri publishes Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot in its opening, Taif rose and Indian sandalwood in its heart, and soft oudh, amber and white musk in its base. Ameeri's mood line reads warm, festive, opulent, never theatrical. Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean are published in its base and in no other pyramid in the range. Mastani's mood line reads sensual, romantic, never sweet, never sharp. Nawaab publishes aged tobacco leaf in its heart and leather in its base. Nawaab's mood line reads regal, refined, long-wearing, never aggressive. Nawaab's published strength figure is 9.5, the deepest in the SOSA attar range. It is ₹399 for 3ml. Nawaab carries 4.9 from 86 published customer reviews. The Pack of 3 is ₹1,055 for the 3ml set, ₹1,859 for 6ml and ₹3,189 for 12ml, and it holds Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani. Adaa is not in it.

Six published fields on each of the four attar pages, and a fragrance family label is not one of them. For an everyday question that is the better trade.

Four reads, for an ordinary week

  1. Stop looking for a family. No attar page in the range prints one.
  2. Read the four occasion lines. None of them names an errand or a cafe.
  3. Read the four scores: Adaa 8.5, Ameeri 9.0, Mastani 9.2, Nawaab 9.5.
  4. Then pick a size: Adaa 3ml Rs 379 to try, 12ml Rs 1,149 for the value.

I am Sonal Sahani, and I compose every SOSA fragrance myself in Pune. I would rather tell you what we measure than guess at what we do not. If a number is not on the product page, you will not find it invented here.

Six published fields beat a family label

No attar page prints a fragrance family. Adaa prints a pyramid, a mood line, an occasion line, a gender line, a strength figure of 8.5 and a wear time.

Questions people ask

Which fragrance family should I pick for everyday wear?

None, because none is published. No SOSA attar page carries a fragrance family label at all. Each publishes a three-tier pyramid, a mood line, a gender line, an occasion line, a self-assigned strength figure and a wear time, and for an everyday brief the lightest published figure is Adaa at 8.5, Rs 379 for 3ml.

Is there a SOSA attar for errands, cafes and short outings?

No occasion line in the range names any of those. Adaa's is the closest and it names office hours, business lunches, daytime weddings, meetings and summer wear, so it is a weekday line rather than an everyday one. Adaa carries 4.9 from 98 published customer reviews.

Is there a trained perfumer behind this range?

Sonal Sahani, who founded SOSA and trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA, Versailles. She composes all four attars herself, and every small batch is hand-blended in Pune and signed off by her before it goes out. The attar pages publish that training outright, which is the honest answer to why a hand-blended Pune attar is worth reading about at all.

Which SOSA attar is least likely to overwhelm a small room?

That has no published answer, and I would rather say so than guess. SOSA publishes no projection figure and no sillage figure for any attar, so nothing here can tell you how one behaves in a room. The published figures are a strength score out of ten and a wear time of 6 to 8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin.

How many attars do I need for an ordinary week?

One will cover it on published facts, because all four share the same wear time of 6 to 8 hours on skin and the same format. If you want more than one, the Pack of 3 is Rs 1,055 for the 3ml set and it holds Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and Adaa is not in it.

Start with one bottle

Adaa ₹379 for 3ml, 4.9 from 98 published customer reviews, the lightest published strength figure in the range at 8.5. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
