How to Make Your Car Smell Good (and Keep It That Way)

1. Vacuum everything. Mats, seat crevices, boot and the gap between seat and console — this is where crumbs, dust and monsoon grit collect and quietly sour. A ten-minute vacuum removes more bad smell than any bottle adds good.

2. Empty the bin and check for food. A single forgotten packet of fries or a spilt lassi under the seat will out-smell a whole vent clip. Look under the seats and in door pockets; this is the most-missed source of a bad-smelling car.

3. Deal with the AC. That sharp, sock-like smell when you first switch on the air is usually mould on the evaporator.
