The source-first method: what to clean before you open the bottle
Before you apply any scent, spend 20 minutes on this. It will make your freshener last three to four times longer.
1. Damp floor mats. Pull them out and dry them completely in the sun. This is the single biggest source of musty car smell in India, especially post-monsoon. Rubber mats trap water underneath. The result is a sour or musty smell every time you switch the AC on. The fix: at the end of each journey, switch from recirculate to fresh-air mode and run the fan (AC off) for 3-5 minutes. 4. The boot. Check it. Forgotten grocery bags, a damp spare-tyre well after a rain, old newspapers - all contribute to the ambient smell of the cabin when air circulates from the boot forward. A clean boot with a dry liner makes a surprising difference.

The air that has been sitting in a sealed 70°C cabin is saturated with outgassing from plastics, rubber, and any organic residue. Flushing it out before you apply a freshener means you are spraying onto a clean air-base, not into a concentrated soup of stale molecules. In apartment parking without direct sun, 30 seconds with doors open is enough. Do this before you start the AC, not after.

Placement matters more than most people realise. The dashboard - where most people instinctively put things - is the worst location for a freshener in an Indian summer. Surface temperatures on dashboards parked in direct sun can exceed 80°C, which dramatically accelerates evaporation and shortens the product's life. Better positions: the rear parcel shelf (for spray), near the front vents but not in direct airflow (for hanging, so the scent distributes slowly), or clipped near a vent where the AC carries it through the cabin gently. This is the question I get most often: "I applied it this morning and now I can't smell it at all - has it stopped working?" Almost always, the freshener is still working. What has stopped is your ability to detect it. This phenomenon is called olfactory fatigue, or sometimes nose blindness.
Here is what is happening. Your olfactory receptors send signals to the brain about any new scent in your environment. But after roughly 15-20 minutes of continuous exposure to the same scent, the receptors desensitise and the brain reduces its response - it has categorised the smell as "background" and stops prioritising it. This is an evolutionary mechanism, not a malfunction: it allows your nose to detect new or potentially dangerous scents rather than being saturated by familiar ones.
The simplest test: step out of your car and walk 10 metres away. Come back in after 3-4 minutes. The scent will return clearly. Your passengers, getting into the car fresh, will smell it strongly. The scent has not faded - your nose has adapted to it.

Dry your mats every time it rains. Not just when you notice a smell.
