A diffuser that stops making mist is almost never broken. It is almost always dirty. Ninety per cent of the support questions I get about weak mist come down to a filmed-over plate or a scaled-up tank, and both are avoidable with a five-minute routine. Here is exactly how I keep mine running, in the order I do it.
Quick answers — read this first
How often should I clean my diffuser? Empty and rinse the tank every couple of days, wipe the plate, and do a proper descale with diluted white vinegar about once a week. If you run it daily, lean towards the more frequent end.

What causes weak or no mist? Usually a filmed or scaled plate. Mineral scale from hard water, or oily residue from the wrong fragrance, damps the vibration. A vinegar descale and a cotton-bud wipe of the plate normally fixes it.

How do I avoid white dust? Use filtered or RO water, especially in hard-water cities. White dust is minerals from tap water carried out on the mist, not anything from the fragrance.
The short answer
Every couple of days: Empty leftover water, rinse the tank, wipe the plate dry. Do not leave water standing.
Weekly: Descale with diluted white vinegar, then rinse well. Clears mineral scale and any residue.
Water: Filtered or RO in hard-water areas to avoid white dust. Room temperature only, never hot.
Fragrance: SOSA water-based Hotel Collection only. It keeps the plate clear where raw oils would clog it.
Why water-based fragrance, not raw oils (illustrative)SOSA water-based fragrance — mists cleanly, made for the plateRaw essential / carrier oils — thick, can clog & damage the unit
Illustrative only. Ultrasonic diffusers atomise water; a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance ride the mist. Thick raw oils sit on the plate and clog it.
Straight answer
How do you clean and maintain an ultrasonic diffuser?
The routine has three parts. Every couple of days, tip out any leftover water, rinse the tank and wipe the ceramic plate at the bottom with a soft cloth or a cotton bud, then dry it. Once a week, descale: fill the tank about halfway with clean water, add a splash of white vinegar, run it for a few minutes or let it sit, then empty and rinse thoroughly until there is no vinegar smell. And always use filtered or RO water at room temperature, never hot water, and only SOSA's water-based fragrance. That is it. Do those three things and the plate stays clear, the mist stays strong, and the unit lasts for years. Skip them and you will slowly starve the mist as scale and residue build up on the plate.
Rinse every couple of days, descale weekly with diluted vinegar, filtered water only, never hot, water-based fragrance only.
Using SOSA's water-based fragrance is half of maintenance done: it never leaves the oily film raw oils do.

Step by step: daily, weekly and the plate

None of this needs tools. A soft cloth, some cotton buds and a bottle of white vinegar cover everything.

Every couple of days
Do not leave old water sitting in the tank between uses. Tip it out, give the tank a quick rinse, and wipe the small ceramic plate at the base with a damp cloth or a cotton bud. Standing water is where residue and, in a warm room, anything unwanted starts to build. Thirty seconds here saves you the weak-mist problem later.
Once a week: the descale
Fill the tank halfway with clean water and add a splash of plain white vinegar. Let it sit for ten minutes, or run the diffuser briefly, so the diluted vinegar loosens mineral scale on the plate. Empty it, then rinse two or three times until there is no vinegar smell left. A cotton bud dipped in the same diluted vinegar clears anything stubborn right on the disc.

Never scrape the plate with anything metal or abrasive. It is a precision part, and a scratch is one of the few things that really does damage a unit. Soft cloth, cotton bud, diluted vinegar, nothing harsher.

If the mist ever weakens, do the descale before you assume the diffuser has failed. In my experience a filmed plate is the culprit almost every time, and five minutes of vinegar brings it straight back.

Water, white dust and the fragrance that keeps it clean

Two inputs decide how often you will be cleaning: the water you use and the fragrance you add.

The worry: "My diffuser leaves a fine white dust on the furniture, so it must be faulty." It is not faulty. That dust is dissolved minerals from hard tap water, atomised out with the mist and settling as it dries. Switch to filtered or RO water and it disappears.

Fill with clean, room-temperature water (filtered or RO in hard-water cities to avoid mineral white dust), never hot water. The mist is cool, with no heat, and it scents a room rather than purifying the air. In hard-water cities this is the single biggest thing you can do, both to stop white dust and to slow the scale that clogs the plate. Hot water is a separate mistake: these are cool-mist units with no heater, and hot water can warp seals and stress the plate.

Use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance in these diffusers. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are too thick or solvent-heavy, so they can clog the ultrasonic misting plate and damage the unit. This is where fragrance choice becomes a maintenance decision. A raw essential or carrier oil leaves a sticky film on the plate every single time you run it, so you would be fighting residue constantly. SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection disperses into the water and lifts out cleanly, so the plate stays clear and your weekly descale stays quick.

The short version: filtered water, room temperature, water-based fragrance, and a quick vinegar descale each week. Do that and the machine will outlast most gadgets in your home.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean an ultrasonic diffuser?
Rinse the tank and wipe the plate every couple of days, and do a full descale with diluted white vinegar about once a week if you use it daily.
What is the white dust from my diffuser?
Dissolved minerals from hard tap water, carried out on the mist. Using filtered or RO water stops it. It is not caused by the fragrance.
How do I fix weak mist?
Descale the plate with diluted white vinegar and wipe it with a cotton bud. A filmed or scaled plate is the usual cause of weak mist.
Can I use hot water in my diffuser?
No. These are cool-mist units with no heater. Hot water can warp seals and stress the plate. Use room-temperature water only.
Does the fragrance affect cleaning?
Yes. SOSA's water-based fragrance lifts out cleanly and keeps the plate clear, while raw essential or carrier oils leave a film that clogs it.
