It is one of the most common questions I get: how long will it actually smell of this? The honest answer is that it depends, on the format, the room, the air and the weather, but the science behind it is clear enough to give you a useful picture.
Quick answers — read this first
How long does home fragrance last in a room? It varies by format. A candle scents a room mainly while it burns and for a short while after. A reed diffuser gives a continuous background scent for weeks because it keeps releasing slowly. How long any of it lingers also depends on airflow, temperature and room size.

Why does the scent fade so fast sometimes? Because fragrance molecules constantly leave the air, settling on surfaces, drifting out through doors and windows, or being replaced by fresh air. Good ventilation keeps a room healthy but does clear scent faster.

Which format lasts longest in a room? For continuous, long-term presence, a reed diffuser, which releases steadily for weeks. A candle is more intense but short-lived, scenting strongly while lit rather than for weeks.
The short answer
The short answer: It depends on format and air. Candles scent while burning; reeds run for weeks; ventilation and heat change how fast scent clears.
Why scent leaves: Fragrance molecules continually exit the air, onto surfaces, out through ventilation, diluted by fresh air.
The biggest variables: Room size, airflow, temperature, and whether scent is released once or continuously.
SOSA's take: For lasting presence choose a continuous format like a reed diffuser; for a strong burst, a candle.

Illustrative only. Reed diffusers run continuously for weeks; candles are measured in hours of burn time but add light and warmth.
Straight answer
How long does fragrance actually stay in a room?
It depends almost entirely on whether the scent is released once or continuously, and on the air in the room. A candle releases scent while it burns and leaves a fading trace for a while after, often an hour or two, because once the source stops, the fragrance molecules steadily leave the air. A reed diffuser keeps releasing scent slowly, so it maintains a continuous background level for weeks. On top of the format, room size, ventilation and temperature all change how fast scent clears, which is why the same product seems to last longer on a still, mild day than on a hot, breezy one.
In short: a candle scents while it burns; a reed diffuser runs for weeks, and air movement and heat decide how fast either clears.
Want a scent that is present for weeks, not hours? A reed diffuser releases continuously, so the room holds a steady background fragrance.

What makes scent stay or go

To smell something, fragrance molecules have to be in the air reaching your nose. So how long a room smells of something comes down to a simple balance: how fast scent is being added to the air versus how fast it is leaving. Once you see it that way, the variables make sense.

Why scent leaves the air
Fragrance molecules do not stay suspended forever. They settle onto walls, fabric and furniture, drift out through doors, windows and vents, and are diluted as fresh air comes in. The more air movement, the faster a scent clears.

Air movement is the big one. A sealed, still room holds a scent far longer than a draughty one or a room with a fan running. That is not a fault in the fragrance; it is just ventilation doing its job. The same goes for room size: a large open-plan space needs much more scent to reach a noticeable level than a small bathroom, because the same amount of fragrance is spread through far more air.

An honest trade-off: the conditions that make a room healthy, fresh air and ventilation, are the same ones that clear scent faster. I would never tell you to seal a room to keep it smelling nice. The better approach is a continuous format that simply keeps topping up the scent as the air refreshes.

Temperature matters too. Warmth makes fragrance molecules evaporate faster, so a candle or diffuser can smell stronger but burn through its scent quicker in heat. That is why the same product behaves differently in a Pune summer than in a mild evening, a point worth keeping in mind when you judge how long something lasts.

Choosing for the longevity you want

Once you understand the balance, choosing a format is straightforward. Decide whether you want a strong scent for a few hours or a gentle one that is always there, because no single product does both at once.

Format How long it scents Best for
Reed diffuser Continuous background scent for weeks Always-on ambience in a room you use daily
Scented candle Strong while burning, fades within an hour or two after Evenings, ambience, a defined occasion
Wax melts While the burner is warm, swap to refresh Changing the mood on demand, flame-free

For most homes, my honest advice is a reed diffuser as the base layer, because it quietly maintains a scent for weeks without you doing anything, and a candle or wax melt on top when you want a stronger, defined moment. That way the room is never empty of scent, but you can lift it when guests arrive or the evening calls for it.

And remember the earlier point about your own nose. If you stop smelling your diffuser after a few days, that is usually adaptation, not the fragrance running out. With a reed diffuser you can check the liquid level in the bottle to see how much is truly left, rather than relying on a sense that has tuned the scent out.

A scent stays as long as it is being added to the air faster than the air is carrying it away. Format decides which side of that balance you are on.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and home fragrance is where I get to think room by room - a flame-free reed diffuser for the hall, a hand-poured candle for the evening, a wax melt when you want to change the mood without a match.

Our reed diffusers are alcohol-free and flame-free, our candles hand-poured from a natural soy blend, all built from real materials and IFRA-compliant. I would rather tell you which format suits which room than sell you the most expensive one.

Buy well, not by reflex. If another brand is honestly made, light it happily. I just wanted home scent with the precision of a trained nose and a label that tells you the truth.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a reed diffuser scent a room?
It releases continuously and maintains a background scent for weeks, depending on bottle size, room size and airflow. SOSA reeds come in 50ml and 130ml; the larger bottle naturally lasts longer before needing a refill.
How long does a candle keep a room smelling nice?
Mainly while it is burning, with a fading trace for an hour or two after you put it out. Our soy-blend jar candles give roughly 15 to 18 hours of burn time in total across multiple sittings.
Why does my home fragrance fade faster in summer?
Heat makes fragrance evaporate faster, so it can smell stronger but burn through quicker. Open windows and fans in warm weather also clear scent more quickly. Both are normal, not a fault in the product.
Does a bigger room need more fragrance?
Yes. The same amount of scent spread through a larger volume of air is more diluted, so big or open-plan spaces need a larger or more concentrated source to reach a noticeable level.
Which SOSA format lasts longest?
For continuous, long-lasting presence, the 130ml reed diffuser, which runs for many weeks. A candle is more intense but measured in hours of burn rather than weeks of presence.
