What buyers ask us about hotel and spa scents
Including the questions where the answer is "we do not make that" and "you cannot put that on your skin"
"I want to smell like a luxury hotel lobby. What do I buy?"
Usually a clean white musk with soft woods. In our range that is Adaa. What we will not do is tell you it reproduces any particular hotel, because it does not and we have no authorisation to try.
Hotel-inspired scent · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Can I wear my reed diffuser oil as a perfume?"
No. Reed oil is assessed for evaporation from a reed in a room, not for leave-on skin application. They are different use cases with different exposure, and we will not sell you one as the other.
Home against skin · answered by Sonal Sahani
"You make a lavender reed diffuser. Do you make a lavender attar?"
No. Evening Calm is Himalayan lavender and chamomile for a room. We do not make a lavender attar, and rather than steer you to something that is not lavender, we will tell you that plainly.
What we do not make · answered by Sonal Sahani
"I want white tea and clean hotel linen on my skin."
We do not make that as an attar. Adaa is the closest thing we have, and it is citrus and jasmine sambac over white musk rather than a linen accord. If linen is the point, we are not your brand for it.
Clean linen · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Which hotel is the Hotel Collection based on?"
It is our own interpretation of a style of hospitality scenting. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group, and it is an ultrasonic diffuser fragrance for rooms rather than a skin product.
Independence · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Will it last all day like my spray?"
We do not publish hour figures for any fragrance, because how long one seems to last depends on your skin, the weather and how quickly you stop noticing it. An oil-carried attar sits close rather than projecting.

Founder Diaries · Luxury Hotel & Spa Inspired Fragrance
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated October 2026
This is a sharper question than it looks, because the massage-oil impression comes from four quite separate causes and only one of them is about the fragrance itself. Identify which one is bothering you and the fix is usually straightforward, and in one case the fix is simply using less.
Quick answers — read this first
What causes the massage-oil smell? Four things: the base oil's own smell, coconut notes, heavy nut-and-cream accords, and over-application, which makes any oil-based fragrance read as a treatment product rather than a perfume.

Which is the most common cause? Over-application. An oil-based fragrance applied generously sits on the skin as a film rather than as a scent, and the nose reads the film as a treatment oil regardless of the composition.

What should I avoid in a note list? Coconut, heavy almond, nougat, whipped cream and anything described as warm oil. Three of SOSA's own solid perfumes carry exactly these notes and we would not recommend them against this brief.
The short answer
Short answer: Four causes: the base oil's own smell, coconut, heavy nut-and-cream accords, and over-application, which is the most common. Avoid coconut, almond, nougat and cream in note lists. Adaa Rs 379 is the safest SOSA option here.
The honest limit: no fragrance we sell reproduces any hotel, spa, resort or retail brand's proprietary scent, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any of them. Where we do not make a family, we say so rather than recommending something adjacent.
Home is not skin: reed diffuser oil and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance are assessed for room use and are not assessed or sold for application to skin. Attars and solid perfumes are the skin products.
Where a hotel-style scent actually lives - and what it is assessed forUltrasonic mist diffuser - water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, room useReed diffuser - its own alcohol-free reed oil, room useAttar or solid perfume - assessed for leave-on skinThe three do not interchangeA scent family can cross between them. A formulation cannot, because the exposure is different.
You can carry a scent family from a room to your skin. You cannot carry a formulation, because a product assessed for evaporating in a room has not been assessed for sitting on you. That distinction is the whole of this guide.
Straight answer
Why does my spa fragrance smell like a treatment oil?
Four causes, and the most common one is not the fragrance. One, the base oil itself. Many carriers used in oil-based fragrance have their own smell: sesame is distinctly nutty, coconut is sweet and waxy, some cold-pressed oils go faintly rancid over time. A well-chosen carrier is close to odourless and a poorly chosen one contributes a greasy note you never asked for. Ours is an oil carrier, and we will name the specific material per product on WhatsApp. Two, coconut. The single most massage-adjacent note in perfumery, because of its overwhelming association with body and hair products. Three, heavy nut and cream accords. Almond, nougat, whipped cream and anything described as warm oil all sit in the same territory. Four, over-application, which is the real culprit most of the time. Any oil-based fragrance applied generously stops being perceived as a scent and starts being perceived as a film on the skin, and the nose reads a film as a treatment product. One light touch at a pulse point reads as perfume. Four heavy strokes read as oil, regardless of what is in the bottle. Safest from us: Adaa ₹379, with no coconut, no nut and no cream anywhere in it. +91 96192 18531.
Base oil, coconut, nut-and-cream notes, and over-application. The last one is usually the answer.
If the brief is clean, quiet and expensive-feeling, the honest starting point in our range is Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml. If it is polished woods, Nawaab at ₹399.

Four things that create the massage-oil impression

The over-application point is worth taking seriously because it is the one people are least willing to believe and the one most likely to be true. An oil-based fragrance delivers a far higher concentration of fragrance material per unit area than an alcohol spray, because there is no alcohol flashing off and carrying the scent outward in a cloud. That means the amount that feels normal to someone used to sprays is a great deal more than an attar needs, and the excess does not simply smell stronger. It changes the character of what you are wearing, because at high surface concentration you begin to perceive the carrier alongside the composition, and the carrier is an oil. This is also why people sometimes report that an attar smelled beautiful in a shop and greasy at home: the shop applied a touch and they applied a stroke. The practical version of all this is unglamorous. Use a quantity that looks like almost nothing. Touch rather than spread. Apply to one or two points rather than four. Wait a minute before deciding whether to add more, because oils take longer than sprays to settle into their actual character. Most of the complaints we hear about oil-based fragrance smelling like a treatment product resolve themselves at that one change, with no change of bottle at all.

1
Why over-application changes the character
Not just stronger, different
An oil delivers far more fragrance material per unit area than a spray, with no alcohol flashing off to carry it outward. At high surface concentration you begin to perceive the carrier alongside the composition, and the carrier is an oil. So too much does not smell like more perfume. It smells like a treatment product.
Tip: This is why the same attar can read beautiful in a shop and greasy at home.
2
The carrier matters more than people think
A good one is close to odourless
Sesame is distinctly nutty, coconut is sweet and waxy, and some cold-pressed oils develop a faint rancidity over time. A carrier that contributes its own smell adds a greasy note nobody asked for. Ours is an oil carrier and we will name the specific material per product on WhatsApp if you ask.
3
The note list test
Four words to look for and avoid
Coconut, almond, nougat and cream. Any of the four will push a composition towards the body-product territory you are trying to escape, however elegantly it is used, because the association with hair and body preparations is simply too strong to overcome through composition alone.
Tip: Three of our own solid perfumes carry exactly these notes, and we would not put them against this brief.
The SOSA principle
Too much oil does not smell like more perfume. It smells like a treatment product, because you have started perceiving the carrier.
Which is why most complaints about this resolve at one light touch instead of a stroke, with no change of bottle.

Which of our products carry the risk

Which of our products are safe here and which are not, said plainly. Safest: Adaa ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk accord. No coconut, no nut, no cream, nothing waxy. Also safe: Ameeri ₹385 - Indian sandalwood, Taif rose, saffron and soft oudh. Sandalwood is creamy in texture but it is a wood rather than a dairy or nut note, which is a different thing entirely. Avoid for this brief, in our own range: Velour ₹479 is toasted almond and whipped cream, Sterling ₹469 is almond nougat with powdered musk, and Sway ₹459 is cocoa and vanilla husk. All three are well made and all three are precisely what you are trying to avoid. Most of our solid body perfumes are gourmand, so the attars are the right part of the range for this question.

Adaa 3ml · ₹379 Safest. Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk accord. No coconut, nut, cream or wax anywhere
Ameeri 3ml · ₹385 Safe. Sandalwood is creamy in texture but it is a wood, not a dairy or nut note, which reads completely differently
Velour ₹479 and Sterling ₹469 Avoid for this brief. Toasted almond with whipped cream, and almond nougat with powdered musk. Well made, wrong direction
Application, whatever you buy One light touch at one or two points. Wait a minute before adding more. Oils settle more slowly than sprays

For the family reasoning behind the whole category, fragrance families associated with calm, spa-like experiences. If powderiness is also on your list, clean woody and airy floral attars if you dislike powdery musk. And for the oil-versus-spray question in general, whether an oil-based attar can smell crisp and airy or whether you need a spray. What SOSA actually makes

Every SOSA attar and solid perfume is alcohol-free and assessed for leave-on skin application. Our reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance are home products and are not assessed for skin. Here is the range with the honest description of each, including the families we do not make at all.

What we actually make, and what each one is for
One genuinely clean attar, two woody ones, two musk-based solids, and a room fragrance that is not for skin
Product Where it sits What it is, honestly From
Adaa attar 3ml The clean one · closest to a hotel lobby Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and a white musk accord. The only genuinely clean, airy composition in our attar range, and the honest answer to most hotel-inspired requests ₹379
Nawaab attar 3ml Polished woods · expensive interiors White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. For wooden-interior and quiet-luxury requests rather than clean-linen ones ₹399
Ameeri attar 3ml Warm sandalwood · heritage hospitality Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, saffron and soft oudh. Rose inside a warm resinous structure, closest to a grand Indian hotel atmosphere ₹385
Velour solid 15g White musk base · skin-close Toasted almond and whipped cream over a white musk base. Soft and skin-close, and sweeter than a hotel-clean scent, which we would rather say than imply ₹479
Sterling solid 15g Powdered musk · refined Almond nougat and white amber over powdered musk. Refined and velvety, and genuinely powdery, so not for anyone who has told us they dislike powder ₹469
Hotel Collection 15ml Rooms only · never skin Water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers. Our own interpretation of hospitality scenting, for air rather than for people ₹299

Attars come in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml: Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149; Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165; Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179; Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199; the three-attar trio ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189 against ₹1,173 / ₹2,063 / ₹3,543 bought singly. Solid body perfumes are 15g, alcohol-free, from ₹459. What we do not make as a skin fragrance: white tea, clean linen or cotton musk, lavender, vetiver, cedarwood, aquatic or marine, and pine. Several of those exist in our home range and are not assessed for skin. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

"I want to smell like a five-star hotel" is one of my favourite things a customer can say, because it tells me far more than a note list would. It tells me you want clean rather than sweet, quiet rather than loud, and expensive-feeling rather than obviously perfumed. That is a brief I can work with.

It also comes with two things I have to be straight with you about. The first is that I cannot sell you a hotel's scent. Those are proprietary compositions made for specific groups, and anybody offering you a reproduction is either guessing or doing something they should not. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group. What I can do is work in the same fragrance families and say so honestly.

The second is harder on my own sales. Our home fragrances are not for your skin. Reed oil is assessed for evaporating from a reed in a room. The Hotel Collection is a water-based fragrance for an ultrasonic mist diffuser. Neither has been assessed for leave-on application to a person, and the exposure is completely different. I will not sell you one as the other, however much you like how it smells in your hallway.

And there are things we simply do not make. No lavender attar. No vetiver attar. No white tea, no clean linen, no cedarwood, no aquatic. Several of those scents live in our reed diffusers and stay there. If that is what you came for, I would rather tell you than sell you something adjacent and hope you do not notice. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I actually apply?
A quantity that looks like almost nothing. Touch rather than spread, apply to one or two points rather than four, and wait a minute before deciding whether to add more, because oils settle into their real character more slowly than sprays.

Formulation and use: SOSA attars are formulated with an oil carrier and no added ethanol, contain no intentionally added DEP, and are assessed as leave-on fine fragrance applied to skin at their actual selling concentration. Supplier IFRA conformity statements, declarable-allergen lists and the finished-product safety assessment are available per product on WhatsApp on +91 96192 18531; formula compositions and percentages are not disclosed. Reed diffuser oil and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance are assessed for room use and are not assessed or sold for application to skin. SOSA does not describe its products as chemical-free, hypoallergenic or safe for everyone, publishes no longevity or hour figures, and makes no claim to reproduce any hotel, spa, resort or retail brand's proprietary fragrance. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel, hospitality or fashion group. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live collection pages.

General context: Fragrance safety standards set limits by product use category, so a composition assessed for diffusion in a room has not thereby been assessed for leave-on skin exposure. Nothing on this page is medical advice; if your skin reacts to a fragrance, stop using it and speak to a dermatologist.
