The word soft turns up on a fragrance page for three different reasons, and only one of them is about wearing close. Delicate does the same. Here is a method for telling them apart that works on any bottle, followed by an honest verdict on mine, including the ones that fail.
Quick answers — read this first
How can I tell if a fragrance really wears close? Read its base, not its adjectives. A base of musk and dry woods tends to wear close; a base of amber, oudh or vanilla does not. Then see what the house publishes, and test on your skin at hour three, never on paper.

Does soft or delicate mean close-wearing? Not necessarily. Soft can mean smooth, creamy or low in volume, and a delicate opening can sit on a heavy base. Only the base and the hour-three test show whether a fragrance actually stays near the skin.

Which SOSA attar passes that test? SOSA Adaa, from ₹379 for 3ml: its base is white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. SOSA Ameeri, SOSA Mastani and SOSA Nawaab all carry amber, oudh, vanilla or leather in the base and fail the strict version.
The short answer
Short answer: Check the base for musk and dry woods, check what the house is willing to publish, and test on skin at hour three. Adjectives are the last thing to trust.
The pick: Of SOSA's four, only SOSA Adaa passes the base test. One 3ml at ₹379, one dab, judged at hour three on an ordinary day.
Next step: Send us the pyramid of a fragrance you are considering, from any brand, and we will read the base with you. Ask for an attar recommendation.
Four tests, in the order to run them1. Read the base: musk and dry woods tend to wear close2. Amber, oudh or vanilla in the base: it will not3. What does the house publish: a base, and a figure?4. Test on skin at hour three, never on paperAdaa passes; Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab do not
The method in the order I use it. The first two tests are free and take a minute with a pyramid. The last line is the verdict on my own range, and it is not flattering.
The one that passes, then two that show how soft can mislead
Straight answer
How Can I Tell a Genuinely Close-Wearing Fragrance From One Simply Described as Soft or Delicate?
You cannot tell from the adjectives, and you can tell from three other things. Here is the method in five steps, with the verdict on SOSA's four at the end, because a method you cannot apply to the seller is not worth much.

1. Read the base, not the adjectives. The base is what is left on your skin once the opening has gone. A base of musk and dry woods such as vetiver and cedarwood tends to wear close. A base of amber, oudh or vanilla tends to fill more space, however gentle the description sounds.

2. Decode the adjective before you trust it. Soft can mean smooth, creamy or simply sweet. Delicate usually describes the first twenty minutes. Neither word is a statement about how close the fragrance stays, and a light opening can sit on a heavy base.

3. See what the house is willing to publish. A full pyramid, with the base named, is the minimum. SOSA publishes it for every attar, along with a stated 6–8 hours on skin. That figure measures duration, not closeness, and nobody should publish a distance.

4. Test on skin at hour three. Paper shows the top and flatters it. One dab on your skin on an ordinary day, judged three hours later, shows the base, which is the only stage that matters for this question.

5. Apply it to our four. SOSA Adaa passes: white musk, vetiver, cedarwood, no oudh. SOSA Ameeri, SOSA Mastani and SOSA Nawaab carry oudh, amber, vanilla, tonka or leather in the base and fail the strict test. The detail is below.

This is a method for telling, not a guarantee of how any fragrance will sit on you. Skin, dose and the day all change it, and I would rather say that than pretend a test removes the doubt.
Read the base, check what the house publishes, test on skin at hour three. By that test only SOSA Adaa at ₹379 passes among SOSA's four. One 3ml, one dab, judged at hour three.
What to buy once the test has been run
The product SOSA Adaa, the attar whose base passes: white musk, vetiver and cedarwood, with no oudh. An alcohol-free roll-on oil, hand-blended in Pune, on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier.
The size to start on The 3ml at ₹379. A test belongs on a small bottle: it is the size that lets you run hour three three times over before deciding.
Dabs, and where One dab, on bare skin, left alone. Do not wipe it, do not add a second, and do not scent a paper strip first; paper is the test you are trying to avoid.
At hour three The citrus, cardamom and neroli are gone and the flowers are thin. By the published pyramid, white musk with vetiver and cedarwood is what remains, and that is the stage you are judging.
What it costs to stay on it Nothing more until the three days are done. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin. The 6ml and 12ml are for after the test, if it passes.
I wrote the method honestly, so I have to apply it honestly: one of my four passes and three do not. If your brief is genuinely close-wearing, Adaa is the bottle, and a 3ml is how you check my reading of my own pyramid against your skin at hour three.

If you want to run the test on a bottle that passes the first step, buy one 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379. Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli on top, jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang in the heart, white musk, vetiver and cedarwood underneath, with no oudh. Apply one dab to bare skin and come back to it at hour three.

The test applied to our own four

A method is only worth publishing if the person publishing it will apply it to their own shelf. SOSA's four are alcohol-free, DPG-free roll-on oils on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. Three of them fail the strict base test, and each card says why.

SOSA Adaa
Passes the base test, with nothing to excuse
SOSA Adaa
₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml. Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. A base of musk and dry woods, no oudh, no amber and no vanilla. Whether it wears close on you is the hour-three question, but the structure is right.
From ₹379
SOSA Mastani
The cleanest example of a delicate top on a heavy base
SOSA Mastani
₹389 for 3ml, ₹685 for 6ml, ₹1,179 for 12ml. Litchi, bergamot and pink pepper on top read light on paper. Beneath them are night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka. A deep floral-gourmand. Soft in the creamy sense, not in the close-wearing one, and it fails the test.
From ₹389
SOSA Nawaab
Fails outright, and is the deepest of the four
SOSA Nawaab · alcohol-free roll-on attar
₹399 for 3ml, ₹699 for 6ml, ₹1,199 for 12ml. White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf over amber, leather and white musk. The musk is in the base and the oud leads. It is a fine attar for a reader who wants that, and the opposite of a close-wearing one.

The three tests in detail

Each of these takes a few minutes and none needs a nose. They are ordered by how much they cost to run, cheapest first, so you can stop as soon as one of them gives you your answer.

1
One
Test one: read the base and ignore the opening
Pyramids are written from the top down, which is the order you smell them in the first twenty minutes and the reverse of the order that matters for wearing close. Go straight to the last line. Musk, vetiver, cedarwood, and similar dry woods sit near the skin and do not fill much space. Amber, oudh, vanilla, tonka and leather are warmer and heavier and tend to widen. Adaa's base is white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. Ameeri's is soft oudh, amber and white musk. The difference between those two lines is most of this page.
Tip: Write the base down on its own line, away from the top. Then look at it with the adjectives covered.
SOSA Adaa
Adaa at ₹379 has the base this test asks for: white musk with vetiver and cedarwood, and nothing warmer.
See SOSA Adaa →
2
Two
Test two: see what the house is willing to publish
A seller who names the base, lists every note and states a wear time has given you something to hold them to. A seller who offers only adjectives has not. SOSA publishes the full pyramid of every attar and a stated 6–8 hours on skin. Be clear about what that figure is: a duration. It says nothing about how close the fragrance stays, and I publish no distance, because how near a fragrance sits depends on the person and the day. Be wary of any page that promises both a long wear and a skin-close wear.
Tip: If a page will not name the base, assume the base is the part it would prefer you did not read.
SOSA Ameeri
Ameeri at ₹385 publishes soft oudh, amber and white musk in the base, which is exactly why you can judge it before you buy.
See SOSA Ameeri →
3
Three
Test three: skin at hour three, not paper
Paper holds the top and ignores the base, so it flatters light openings and tells you nothing about what comes after. Your skin changes a fragrance in ways no pyramid predicts. The only test that answers the question is one dab on bare skin, on an ordinary day, left alone for three hours. By then the citrus has gone and what is left is the base. If you have to lean in to find it, it wears close. If you can find it without leaning, it does not, whatever the page says.
Tip: Do it on a normal day, in normal clothes, with no other fragrance on you.
SOSA Nawaab
Nawaab at ₹399 is the control case: a deep, oud-led base, there to show the contrast.
See SOSA Nawaab →
The SOSA principle
A fragrance is close-wearing because of what it is built from at the bottom, not because of how the top is described, and the word on the label is the least reliable evidence of the three.
That is why the method starts at the base and ends on your skin, with the house's own publishing in the middle. Adjectives only appear when someone is describing the opening, and the opening is the part that leaves first.
SOSA Adaa
The attar whose base passes the first test: Adaa at ₹379: bergamot, cardamom and neroli over three white flowers, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four, no oudh, in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml.

Our four against the test, one by one

The table applies the first test to every attar, and says plainly which pass and which fail. It is the same method you can use on any brand, and I have not softened my own results.

The SOSA plan
The base of each SOSA attar, and whether it passes the close-wearing test
The attar, and what its base lists Does it pass, said plainly
SOSA AdaaAdaa: white musk, vetiver, cedarwood
Passes. A base of musk and dry woods, with no oudh, amber or vanilla. Hour three on your skin still decides, but the structure is the right one. View →
SOSA AmeeriAmeeri: soft oudh, amber, white musk
Fails the strict test, though gently. Amber and soft oudh sit in the base, so it is warmer and wider than Adaa even with white musk underneath. View →
SOSA MastaniMastani: Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla, tonka
Fails. Soft in the creamy sense, but oudh, vanilla and tonka make for a deep, warm base, and the litchi top does not change that. View →
SOSA NawaabNawaab: amber, leather, white musk, under an oud-led top
Fails clearly. The deepest of the four, with white royal oud and aged tobacco leaf on top. A fine attar, and the opposite of close-wearing. View →

For the definition behind the method, what skin scent actually means in perfumery is the page I would read first. If you would rather start from your own taste, a minimalist niche reader's route to a close-wearing attar draws the same line from the other side, and whether a skin-scent attar can last for hours and stay close takes up the duration question separately. An earlier page in Founder Diaries answers which attar suits a musk lover; this one asks how you would know a close-wearing fragrance when you meet one. For a bottle to start with, the premium skin-scent attars compared and a pyramid read for you are both a click away.

Run the test on the fragrance in front of you
What does the published base of the fragrance list?
  • Musk and dry woods such as vetiver or cedarwood
  • Amber, oudh, vanilla, tonka or leather
  • The seller does not publish a base at all
Can you wear it on skin for three hours before you commit?
  • Yes, from a sample or a small size
  • No, only a full bottle or a paper strip
Musk and dry woods, and you can test it
The base passes. Put one dab on bare skin on an ordinary day and judge it at hour three. For SOSA that base is SOSA Adaa; the 3ml at ₹379 is the whole test, and nothing more is needed until you have run it.
Musk and dry woods, but only a full bottle or paper
Do not buy a large bottle on the base alone. Ask for a sample or the smallest size; a test on paper is not a test. This is what the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is for, and it is the reason the small size exists.
Amber, oudh, vanilla, tonka or leather, and you can test it
It fails the strict version, whatever the adjectives say. If you still like it, wear it as a warmer fragrance and not as a skin scent. In our range SOSA Ameeri is the gentlest of those, soft oudh and amber under rose and sandalwood, from ₹385 for 3ml.
Amber, oudh, vanilla, tonka or leather, and you cannot test it
Leave it. A warm fragrance you cannot test is not the close-wearing one you asked for, and buying nothing costs you nothing. Send us the pyramid and we will say what we think of it.
The seller does not publish a base
Take the description as unverified. Ask for the full pyramid; if they cannot give one, the adjectives are all you have been offered. SOSA publishes the pyramid of every attar, and the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is a low-risk way to check one.
SOSA Ameeri
The softest of the three that fail: Ameeri at ₹385: saffron, pink pepper and bergamot, rose and Indian sandalwood, then soft oudh, amber and white musk. It carries some oudh and amber, so it is warmer than Adaa and fails the strict test.
The one that passes, and the one that nearly does
Adaa passes the base test cleanly, with white musk, vetiver and cedarwood and no oudh. Ameeri fails it gently, with soft oudh and amber, and gives you rose and sandalwood in return. Choose which trade you want.
See the SOSA AdaaSee the SOSA Ameeri
Read the bottom of the pyramid before you read a single adjective, because the adjectives are about the first twenty minutes and you are wearing the next six hours.

One row passes and one row nearly does. The note beneath them says what the other two are for, so you can use them without pretending they answer a question they do not.

Both rows start on the 3ml: Adaa at ₹379, Ameeri at ₹385. Larger sizes, ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml for Adaa and ₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml for Ameeri, are for after the test. SOSA Mastani and SOSA Nawaab are not in the table because they fail it: Mastani has oudh, vanilla and tonka in the base, and Nawaab is oud-led with amber and leather. White musk is a base note in Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab and never the whole composition. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin and nothing further; how long any fragrance lasts, and how close it stays, depends on skin, dose and the day. A patch test on first use is the only skin advice we give. A note from Sonal

I spent a long time reading perfume descriptions before I made any, and the thing that struck me was how often soft and delicate were used to sell fragrances that were neither. The words are attached to the opening, because the opening is what a person sniffs in a shop, and the base is the part they discover at home. I wanted to write the page I would have wanted to read: how do I tell, before I spend anything?

So I did the uncomfortable thing and ran my own four through it. Adaa passes. Ameeri nearly does, and is a lovely attar, but it has soft oudh and amber under the rose and I would be lying if I called it a skin scent. Mastani is the textbook delicate top on a deep base, and Nawaab is the deepest thing I make. I would rather you bought the right one of those for your brief than the wrong one because I was shy about my own results.

The same method works on anyone's bottle. An earlier page in Founder Diaries answers which attar suits a musk lover; this one answers how you would know. Read the base, ask what is published, wear it for three hours. Nobody can promise you how any fragrance will sit on your skin, and the test exists because of that. A portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Why does soft not mean close-wearing?
Because soft is a word about texture and sweetness as often as distance. A creamy sandalwood-and-vanilla base is soft in the way a blanket is soft, and that kind of softness fills space. Close-wearing is about what sits at the bottom of the pyramid, which is why the base is the first thing to read.
Does a published 6–8 hours on skin mean it wears close?
No. It is a duration, and it says nothing about how far or near the fragrance sits. SOSA publishes 6–8 hours on skin for all four attars and publishes no distance for any of them, deliberately. Closeness is judged at hour three on your own skin.
Which SOSA attar fails the close-wearing test?
Three do, strictly. SOSA Ameeri has soft oudh and amber in the base, SOSA Mastani has oudh, vanilla and tonka, and SOSA Nawaab is oud-led over amber and leather. Only SOSA Adaa, with white musk, vetiver and cedarwood, passes cleanly, and it carries no oudh.
Is a fragrance with amber always loud?
No, and I would not claim it. Amber can be soft, and Ameeri's is. But amber in the base tends to widen the way a close-wearing reader does not want, so it fails the strict test. It does not make Ameeri a bad attar, only one for a different brief.
What if I cannot test on skin before buying?
Then buy the smallest size or nothing. The 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is the cheapest honest test in the range, and a paper strip is not a substitute. If you are buying from any other brand, ask for a sample and judge at hour three.
SOSA Mastani
A delicate top on a base that does not wear close: Mastani at ₹389: litchi, bergamot and pink pepper over jasmine and Damask rose, on Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. The textbook case of a light opening hiding a deep base.
