 A simple, honest starter guide

By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated June 2026
Home fragrance can look intimidating from outside - diffusers, melts, oils, throw, cold throw, all this jargon. It really is not complicated. I am Sonal, a perfumer, and this is the guide I wish beginners were handed: what to buy first, what to skip, and the small mistakes that put people off before they start.
Quick answers — read this first
What should I buy first? A reed diffuser. It is flame-free, needs no attention and runs for weeks - the lowest-effort way to start.

How much should I spend? Start small. One reed diffuser around ₹749 is plenty to see whether you enjoy home scent before adding more.

Biggest beginner mistake? Buying too many scents at once and over-scenting small rooms. Start with one, placed sensibly.
The short answer
First buy. A flame-free reed diffuser - simplest, lowest effort.
Budget. Begin with one product; do not over-invest before you know your taste.
Mistake to avoid. Too many scents at once, and over-scenting small rooms.
Honest limit. Fragrance scents the air; it does not clean it.
Reed diffuser vs scented candle (illustrative, not clinical)SOSA reed diffuser — flame-free, weeks of continuous scentScented candle — warmth + glow, scent while litCheap gel air freshener — fades fast, often synthetic
Illustrative only. A reed diffuser gives a steady, flame-free background scent for weeks; a candle adds warmth and light but scents mainly while burning.

Beginner rule: buy one reed diffuser, place it where air moves, add a candle later. That is it.
Brand new to this? Start with a single flame-free reed diffuser.

Your first purchase

When someone asks me what to buy first, I always say the same thing: a reed diffuser. Not because it is the most exciting format, but because it is the most forgiving. There is nothing to remember, nothing to switch off, and no flame to keep an eye on.

A reed diffuser is a bottle of fragrance with rattan reeds standing in it. The reeds draw the liquid up and release the scent slowly into the air. No heat, no flame, no electricity - it just works in the background for weeks.

SOSA’s reed diffusers are alcohol-free and come in five scents, so you can pick by mood: Evening Calm if you want soothing, Morning Freshness if you want clean and bright, Fresh Brew if you want cosy and warm. At ₹749 it is a low-risk way to find out whether home fragrance is for you.

Placement matters more than beginners expect. Put your diffuser where air moves gently - near a doorway or a walked-through hallway - so the scent travels. Tucked in a still corner, even a good diffuser feels weak.

That is your whole starter kit: one diffuser, placed well. Live with it for a couple of weeks before buying anything else.

Beginner mistakes to skip

Most people who say home fragrance ‘does not work for them’ made one of these small mistakes. They are all easy to avoid.

Buying too many scents at once. A shelf of half-used diffusers and candles is overwhelming and wasteful. Start with one. Add the next only when you know what you want more of.
Over-scenting a small room. A strong diffuser in a tiny bathroom can feel heavy. Smaller spaces need less - a 50ml reed is plenty for a small room, a larger one for an open living area.
Expecting it to clean the air. Fragrance adds scent; it does not purify or remove odour at the source. Ventilate and clean first, then scent. A candle over a stale room just smells like a scented stale room.
Forgetting adaptation. You stop smelling your own home’s scent within minutes - that is normal, not a faulty product. Trust that guests still notice it, and resist the urge to keep buying stronger.
Almost every beginner regret comes from buying more, not buying better.

Once the reed is part of your routine, a soy-blend candle for the evenings is the natural next step - warmth and glow on top of your always-on baseline. From there, you have everything you need and can grow your collection slowly, by taste rather than by impulse.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and home fragrance is where I get to think room by room - a flame-free reed diffuser for the hall, a hand-poured candle for the evening, a wax melt when you want to change the mood without a match.

Our reed diffusers are alcohol-free and flame-free, our candles hand-poured from a natural soy blend, all built from real materials and IFRA-compliant. I would rather tell you which format suits which room than sell you the most expensive one.

Buy well, not by reflex. If another brand is honestly made, light it happily. I just wanted home scent with the precision of a trained nose and a label that tells you the truth.
