✓ Honest ceiling: sandalwood is a soft wood, so Ameeri is fresher, not fresh✓ Vanilla and tonka are in Mastani's base and nowhere in Ameeri's pyramid✓ Made in India to IFRA standards · a portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali

Three words in your question are doing separate jobs: heavy, creamy and sweet. Each has a different cause, and sandalwood itself is the cause of very little of it. Take them one at a time and the question becomes answerable, with a ceiling I will name in the first minute.
Quick answers — read this first
Can a sandalwood fragrance smell fresh and clean? To a degree. Sandalwood is a soft wood, not a fresh one, so freshness comes from a bright top such as bergamot and pink pepper and from a quiet base. SOSA Ameeri is built that way, with no vanilla or tonka.
What makes a sandalwood fragrance heavy, creamy or sweet? Heavy comes from a dense base and a heavy dose. Creamy and sweet mostly come from vanilla, tonka and gourmand partners, not the wood. SOSA Mastani has Madagascar vanilla and tonka beside its Mysore sandalwood.
Is any SOSA perfume oil a fresh sandalwood? No. The six named perfume oils are not published as sandalwood-led, and the sandalwood SOSA publishes is in the attars. SOSA Ameeri is the lightest-set of those; SOSA Adaa is the fresh answer, with no sandalwood note.
The short answer
Short answer: Partly. Sandalwood is a soft wood, and freshness comes from the top and from a quiet base. Ameeri is the lighter-set one. It is fresher, not fresh.
The pick: One 3ml of SOSA Ameeri at ₹385, one dab, judged at hour three. If fresh matters more than wood, SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is the honest swap.
Next step: Tell us which of heavy, creamy and sweet bothers you most and what you wore when it did, and we will say if Ameeri fits. Ask for an attar recommendation.
Your three complaints and what usually causes each. Heavy is first because dose is the cheapest fix, and the 3ml price of Ameeri is on the last line, the attar this page lands on.
Ameeri first, Adaa if fresh matters more, Mastani to compare
Can a Sandalwood Perfume Oil Feel Fresh and Clean Rather Than Heavy, Creamy or Sweet?
Partly, and the part is worth having. Sandalwood is a soft wood and never a fresh one, so freshness has to be built around it. Here is how that works, in five steps, and where the range stops.
1. Separate the three complaints. Heavy is mostly the base and the dose. Creamy and sweet mostly come from vanilla, tonka and gourmand partners, not from sandalwood. Each has its own fix, and sandalwood is rarely the culprit.
2. Look at the top of the pyramid for freshness. Bergamot and pink pepper open a fragrance bright and dry. SOSA Ameeri at ₹385 starts on Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot, then puts Indian sandalwood under Taif rose.
3. Look at the bottom for heaviness. Ameeri's base is soft oudh, amber and white musk. Amber adds some warmth, so it is lighter-set, not light. SOSA Mastani has Mysore sandalwood with oudh, vanilla and tonka, and is the creamy, sweet one.
4. Control the dose. One dab is a whisper and two is a sentence. A heavy reading is very often a two-dab reading, and it is the cheapest correction there is, since it costs you nothing.
5. If fresh outranks wood, change bottle.SOSA Adaa at ₹379 has no sandalwood note, and opens on bergamot, cardamom and neroli. It is the fresher answer, and a different wood.
I cannot promise what anyone else will make of it, and I will not try. What I can promise is the published note list, a named ceiling and a 3ml that lets you check the claim on your own skin.
Sandalwood is soft, not fresh, so freshness comes from the top and a quiet base. SOSA Ameeri at ₹385 is the lighter-set one; SOSA Mastani is the creamy sweet one. One 3ml, one dab.
What to buy for a sandalwood that is not heavy, creamy or sweet
The product
SOSA Ameeri, the sandalwood attar with no vanilla or tonka in its pyramid. An alcohol-free, DPG-free roll-on oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, hand-blended in Pune, with amber and soft oudh below.
The size to start on
The 3ml, at ₹385. The 6ml at ₹679 and the 12ml at ₹1,165 are for after you have worn it in the season you actually plan to wear it.
Dabs, and where
One dab, on the chest or under a sleeve, not two. One dab is a whisper and two is a sentence, and a fragrance that feels heavy is very often a two-dab fragrance. Reduce the dose before you change the bottle.
At hour three
The bergamot and pink pepper are long gone. What the pyramid leaves is Indian sandalwood with soft oudh, amber and white musk. If that reads heavy or sweet to you, Adaa is the swap.
What it costs to stay on it
Nothing past the 3ml until you have made up your mind. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin, and the 3ml covers the three ordinary days the test needs. Adaa at ₹379 is the second try, only if needed.
I would start you on Ameeri and tell you the ceiling first: it is a sandalwood, so it is soft, and it has amber in the base. What it does not have is vanilla or tonka. If you want clean before wood, I will say so and point you at Adaa without a fuss.
Buy one 3ml of SOSA Ameeri at ₹385 and nothing else for now: Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot on top, Taif rose and Indian sandalwood in the heart, soft oudh, amber and white musk underneath. No vanilla and no tonka. An alcohol-free roll-on oil, hand-blended in Pune. One dab, judged at hour three.
Two attars carry sandalwood in a way a reader like you might consider, and one does not carry it at all. All four attars are alcohol-free, DPG-free roll-on oils in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, and none of the six named perfume oils is published as a sandalwood fragrance. The sandalwood is in the attars, in three different kinds of company.
The lighter-set sandalwood: bright top, no vanilla
₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml. Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh, amber and white musk. No vanilla, no tonka. The amber and oudh keep it from being light, so it is lighter-set, fresher than the creamy attars and not fresh in itself.
₹389 for 3ml, ₹685 for 6ml, ₹1,179 for 12ml. Litchi, bergamot and pink pepper over night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose, on Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka. This is the pyramid that causes the complaints in your question. It is a lovely attar for a different brief.
₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml. Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. No oudh, no amber, no vanilla and no sandalwood note. Take it if fresh matters more to you than the wood.
None of these is a promise about your nose. Each is a cause, readable on a pyramid and adjustable with a dab, that explains why a sandalwood fragrance can feel heavier or sweeter than the wood itself would suggest.
1
One
Heavy is a base and a dose, more than a note
A fragrance reads as heavy when its base is dense and when there is a lot of it on the skin. Oudh, amber, vanilla and tonka are all weighty base materials, and a second dab doubles whatever they say. Sandalwood by itself is not the heavy part. Ameeri's base is soft oudh, amber and white musk, so it carries some weight, and Mastani's base adds vanilla and tonka to oudh, which carries more. Of the two, dose is the only lever you control on the day.
Tip: Try one dab before you try a different bottle. A second dab doubles whatever the base is saying.
Mastani at ₹389 puts vanilla and tonka under oudh and Mysore sandalwood: the denser base of the two.
Cream in a sandalwood fragrance mostly comes from vanilla and tonka sitting beside it, and sweetness from the same two, from fruit such as litchi and from amber. Sandalwood is the soft wood in the middle of all that, and it takes the blame. Ameeri has no vanilla and no tonka in its pyramid, and Taif rose, not a gourmand note, sits over the wood. Amber is the one sweet-leaning material in its base, and I would rather name it than hide it.
Tip: Read the pyramid for vanilla, tonka, litchi and amber. The more of them, the sweeter the reading you should expect.
Ameeri at ₹385 keeps vanilla and tonka out and sets rose over the wood, with amber the one sweet note.
Freshness is a top-note job, and sandalwood is a middle
Fresh in perfumery is mostly citrus, light spice and green or white floral material, and it is done in the first hour. Sandalwood is a heart and base wood and does not do that work. Ameeri's top does: Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot. After that the fragrance becomes what its heart and base are, which is soft. Every SOSA attar sits on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, listed apart from the pyramid, and the pyramid is what I describe.
Tip: Judge freshness in the first twenty minutes and wearability at hour three. They are two different tests with two different answers.
Adaa at ₹379 opens on bergamot, cardamom and neroli, with no saffron or fruit in the top.
Sandalwood is not what makes a fragrance heavy, creamy or sweet. Its partners and its dose are, and both can be read on a pyramid or changed with a single dab.
That is why the useful question is never whether sandalwood can be fresh. It is what stands around the sandalwood, and how much of it you put on.
The lighter-set sandalwood, with its amber named: Ameeri at ₹385: Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot, Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, then soft oudh, amber and white musk. An alcohol-free roll-on attar in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml.
The table below takes each complaint in your question and says what causes it and where in the range that cause lives. One row is a plain statement that the range can only partly help.
The SOSA plan
Heavy, creamy, sweet and fresh: what causes each, and the bottle
The complaint, and what usually causes it
Where it sits in the SOSA range, said plainly
Heavy: a dense base and a heavy hand
Ameeri has soft oudh and amber below the wood, so it is not weightless. Reduce the dose first. Mastani and Nawaab carry more weight in the base. View →
Creamy: vanilla and tonka around the wood
This is Mastani: Mysore sandalwood with Madagascar vanilla and tonka. Ameeri's pyramid has neither, so it reads less creamy by construction. View →
Sweet: vanilla, tonka, litchi, amber
Ameeri has amber as its one sweet-leaning note. Mastani has litchi on top and vanilla and tonka in the base. If sweet is the worst complaint, go to Adaa.
Fresh as the main goal, with the wood second
Adaa. Bergamot, cardamom and neroli on top, then white musk and dry woods. No sandalwood note, so it gives up the wood to keep the fresh. View →
Wood as the main goal, with fresh second
Ameeri. Bergamot and pink pepper open it, and the sandalwood follows under a rose. Fresher than the creamy attars; not fresh. View →
If fresh matters more than the wood: Adaa at ₹379: bergamot, cardamom and neroli, three white flowers, then white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. No sandalwood note, no oudh, no amber. The lightest of the four.
The fork is which word you cannot give up. Ameeri keeps the sandalwood and lightens everything around it. Adaa gives up the sandalwood note and keeps the fresh opening and the dry finish.
Two rows. Ameeri is the answer for the reader who wants the wood and a lighter setting. Adaa is the answer for the reader whose first word was fresh. The note says what neither of them is, and where the range runs out.
Both rows start small: the 3ml of Ameeri at ₹385, or the 3ml of Adaa at ₹379. The larger sizes are a purchase for after a full season: ₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml for Ameeri and ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml for Adaa. Neither is a fresh sandalwood, because the range has no such thing: Ameeri is sandalwood with a bright top and an amber base, and Adaa is fresh without the wood. The six named perfume oils are not published as sandalwood fragrances, so none of them changes the answer. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for the attars and nothing further; how long any fragrance lasts depends on skin, dose, clothing and the day. A patch test on first use is the only skin advice we give. Nobody is able to tell you in advance what anyone else will think of it, and I will not. Ours is a contact page and a person who replies: Ask for an attar recommendation and tell us which complaint is the worst.

A note from Sonal
When someone asks me for sandalwood that is not heavy, creamy or sweet, I ask them to say which of the three they mean, because they are not the same complaint. People tend to blame the wood for all three. Sandalwood is a quiet material. The weight, the cream and the sugar usually arrive with its neighbours, or with a second dab, and neither is the wood's fault.
I should say the ceiling plainly. I make no fresh sandalwood. What I make is Ameeri, which opens on bergamot and pink pepper, keeps vanilla and tonka out, and sets Indian sandalwood under Taif rose. It still has amber and a soft oudh in the base, so it is lighter-set and not light, and I would rather you heard that from me than found it at hour three.
So the advice is small. One 3ml, one dab, three ordinary days, and a judgment at hour three, when the top has gone and the base is what you wear. If it reads fresh enough, you have your bottle. If not, Adaa is the other one I would ask you to try, with no sandalwood note and a dry base. Nobody is able to tell you in advance what anyone else will make of it, so the measure is yours. Frequently asked questions
Can sandalwood ever smell fresh?
On its own it is a soft, milky wood, not a fresh material, so the honest answer is not by itself. A bright top, such as the bergamot and pink pepper at the front of SOSA Ameeri, gives a sandalwood fragrance a fresh start, and a quiet base keeps it from turning heavy.
Is any SOSA perfume oil a sandalwood fragrance?
The six named perfume oils, Zaffran, Tabac Noir, Samundar, Khayaal, Chashni and Bahaar, are not published as sandalwood fragrances. The sandalwood is in three of the attars: SOSA Ameeri, SOSA Mastani and SOSA Nawaab. Of those, Ameeri is the lighter-set.
Why does a sandalwood fragrance sometimes feel sweet to me?
Usually because of what sits beside the wood: vanilla, tonka, fruit or amber. SOSA Mastani has vanilla and tonka, and SOSA Ameeri has amber. A second dab also amplifies whatever sweetness is there. One dab, and judge at hour three, is the first correction.
Every SOSA attar has a sandalwood carrier, so is Adaa a sandalwood scent?
Every attar sits on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, which is listed apart from the pyramid. SOSA Adaa's pyramid has no sandalwood note, and it is the pyramid I describe. I make no promise about how the carrier reads to you. The 3ml is the test.
What if Ameeri still feels too heavy?
Then you have learned something for ₹385 and not for ₹1,165, which is the point of the 3ml. Tell us what you smelled at hour one and hour three, and we will say whether SOSA Adaa is the better try or the range is not for you.
The creamy, sweet one, to leave out of this search: Mastani at ₹389: night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose over Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka. A deep floral-gourmand, and the opposite of fresh.
SOSA — A Lighter Startone 3ml of Ameeri, one dab, judged at hour three
SOSA Ameeri at ₹385 is Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh, amber and white musk, with no vanilla or tonka. SOSA makes no fresh sandalwood, and Adaa is the fresh alternative with no sandalwood note. Alcohol-free, hand-blended in Pune. A portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali.
