The seasonal rotation
A hotel does not run the same fragrance in July that it runs in December, and neither should a flat that owns seven bottles. The rotation I would suggest for an Indian 1BHK is deliberately simple: two changes a year, each one taking about twenty minutes. Through the hot and humid months, run the driest things you own — Westin-inspired (white tea, aloe, cedar) in the living/dining and Shangri-La-inspired (jasmine, green tea, white tea) in the bedroom, which stays light enough to sleep in when the room is warm. Through the cooler months, move to Ritz-Carlton-inspired (white tea, bergamot, cedar) in the living room and St. Regis-inspired (amber, violet, woods) in the bedroom, which is the pairing most people think of as the flat's real character.
The changeover itself is worth doing properly rather than topping up over the old scent. Empty the tank, rinse it, wipe the misting plate, refill with fresh water and the new fragrance. The room takes about twenty minutes to change over, and that twenty minutes is genuinely one of the pleasures of owning the machine — it is the closest a 500 sq ft flat comes to redecorating. I am careful with the word luxury, because in home fragrance it usually means more — a bigger machine, a stronger setting, a heavier scent. In my experience it means almost the opposite. The homes that feel most considered are the ones running two well-chosen fragrances at a level you have to stop and notice.
