The most common message I get from a contemporary home is that the fragrance keeps disappearing. It is almost never the fragrance. It is that the room contains forty square metres of wool, boucle and linen, all of which are quietly taking the scent out of the air and holding on to it. In a marble flat the same oil would feel twice as strong.
So for these homes I build in the opposite direction to a hard modern room. Something with a base you can lean on - sandalwood, cedar, a dry musk - lifted with white tea or fig leaf so it does not get sleepy, and no sugar in it at all. Then run it low and continuously rather than in bursts, because the textiles will average it out anyway.
