If you want to know whether a home has a humidity problem, open a wardrobe. It is the most sensitive indicator in the house, and it is usually the first place a musty smell establishes, for reasons that are entirely structural. A wardrobe is a small enclosed volume. It is packed densely with cotton, linen, wool and blends, all of which are hygroscopic and take up atmospheric moisture readily. There is essentially no air movement inside it, because a solid rail of clothing blocks convection completely. And it is opened for perhaps thirty seconds a day. In a month where indoor humidity sits above sixty per cent for weeks, that combination provides everything mould and mildew require, and the fabric provides the substrate. Once colonies establish on stored fabric, the smell is no longer in the wardrobe - it is in the clothes, and it comes out of the cupboard on the wearer. The measures that work are unglamorous and they are all about moisture rather than fragrance. A moisture absorber tub placed on a shelf pulls water out of the enclosed air continuously and is the cheapest effective intervention available; it needs replacing when the crystals have dissolved and the reservoir has filled, which in a bad monsoon can be every few weeks. Leaving the wardrobe doors open for a stretch each day, ideally while the bedroom itself is being cross-ventilated, is free and probably the most effective single habit, because it converts a sealed box into part of a ventilated room for an hour. Leaving space between garments rather than packing a rail solid allows some air movement within the wardrobe itself. And clothes must be put away genuinely dry. This last point deserves emphasis because it is the commonest cause of the problem: in monsoon, laundry frequently comes off the line or out of the dryer at ninety per cent dry, feels dry to the hand, and is put away. Fabric stored in that condition, in a sealed cupboard, will smell within days, and it will pass the smell to what it is touching. Airing laundry indoors with a fan for an extra few hours before it goes away prevents more wardrobe problems than any product. There is one caution specific to this room, and it is the reason this chapter exists rather than being folded into a general damp page. What should never be attempted is fragrance on musty fabric: the two do not merge, the musty note continues to be produced by the growth on the fibre, and the wearer carries both.
