Founder Diaries · Diwali Gifting · For Parents and In-Laws
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated August 2026
Fathers are reliably described as the hardest people in the family to buy for, and the diagnosis is usually wrong. It is not that he wants nothing. It is that he has answered “I don't need anything” for thirty years and everyone eventually believed him — so the categories where he does have opinions are already full, and the categories where he has none go unexplored. Home fragrance is the second kind. Almost no man over sixty has a settled position on what his study should smell like, which is exactly why the gift works.
Quick answers — read this first
The answer: Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar. ₹849 for 50ml, ₹1,349 for 130ml. The least sweet, least gendered scent in the range and the best gift in it for someone who is hard to buy for.

Where it goes: the study, the desk, the reading chair — three or four reeds, not six. One customer put it exactly this way: “Gifted to my dad for his study. He's the hardest person to buy fragrance for. He texted me asking for a second one.” — Karishma N., Delhi.

If he lives in his car: the Safar at ₹3,999 — waterless, cordless, rechargeable. A reed has no business in that answer.

The honest gap: there is no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed diffuser. If oud is what he wears, the Nawaab attar is a personal fragrance and not a room one — and there is still no oud reed.
The short answer
Short answer: Mountain Breeze at ₹849 for 50ml or ₹1,349 for 130ml, put in his study or beside his chair with three or four reeds in it. Himalayan pine, real sage and Indian cedar at 9.4 on the SOSA strength scale — deep and dry rather than sweet, with none of the floral or gourmand loading that makes most home fragrance feel like it was chosen for somebody else. It is the scent we recommend for anyone hard to buy for, and it holds a 4.9 across 138 verified reviews with 96% recommending it.
Route by his life, not his age: a father who drives constantly gets the Safar ₹3,999 or a car perfume from ₹449; one who wears fragrance gets a 6ml or 12ml attar at ₹669–₹1,199, with Nawaab as the only oud anywhere at SOSA; one who still runs a business, showroom or clinic gets the Vaayu ₹11,999; one who loves hotels gets the Sukoon ₹1,899; one with a small desk and no interest in a project gets the Boond ₹899.
Shop: Mountain Breeze 50ml ₹849 (6–8 weeks) and 130ml ₹1,349 (14–18 weeks), or the Fresh & Grounded duo at ₹1,548. Six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, alcohol-free, nothing to plug in or switch off. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
What should I give my father for Diwali?
1. Buy Mountain Breeze at ₹849 and put it in his study. Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar — dry, green and resinous rather than sweet, and the least gendered register we make. It is the answer we give for every hard-to-buy-for recipient in the range, and a father is the archetype of that category.

2. Aim at the one square metre of the house that is unambiguously his. Most fathers have exactly one — a desk, a reading chair, a corner with a lamp and a stack of things nobody else is allowed to tidy. That space almost never receives a gift, because gifts are treated as household objects and get put in the drawing room. Aim there and the present stops being generic.

3. Use three or four reeds, not six. A study is usually a small closed room and the register here is deep. Depth is not the same as volume, and the reed count is the volume dial: three for soft projection, four for a room he is in all day, six only in a living room. Say the number when you hand it over.

4. If his life is elsewhere, follow it rather than the category. A father who is in the car two hours a day should be given the Safar at ₹3,999 — waterless, cordless, rechargeable — or a car perfume from ₹449, not a bottle for a room he barely sits in. A father who still runs a business, showroom or clinic should be given the Vaayu at ₹11,999, which is a working machine rather than an ornament.

5. If he wears fragrance, buy the size that makes it a gift. An attar at 3ml is a token; at 6ml (₹669–₹699) or 12ml (₹1,149–₹1,199) it is a proper present. Nawaab is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, and it is the only oud anywhere in the SOSA range.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, IFRA-compliant, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: Mountain Breeze ₹849 in the study, three or four reeds. Safar ₹3,999 if he drives. A 12ml attar ₹1,149–₹1,199 if he wears fragrance. Vaayu ₹11,999 if he still runs a business. There is no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed diffuser, whatever the note list you were hoping for.
SOSA Mountain Breeze pine sage and cedar reed diffuser
The best gift for someone hard to buy for
Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine + sage + cedar ₹849 / 50ml
Real Himalayan pine with sage and Indian cedar, at 9.4 the deepest woody in the range and the least sweet thing we make. It reads as altitude — cool, dry, faintly resinous — rather than as perfume, which is why it lands with people who have spent a lifetime saying they do not like scented things. 4.9 across 138 verified reviews, 96% recommending. 6–8 weeks on the 50ml, 14–18 weeks on the 130ml at ₹1,349.

Why he is hard to buy for, properly diagnosed

“Difficult” is nearly always a misdiagnosis. A father is not a man without preferences; he is a man with very firm preferences in a small number of categories and no preferences at all outside them. He knows exactly which pen, which chappals, which brand of tea, which chair. Those are the categories the family keeps buying in, and they are the categories where he will politely accept something that is not quite right and go on using the old one. Everything below is about finding the other kind of category.

1
DIAGNOSIS ONE · SPECIFICITY
Buy in a category he has no opinion in
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuserMountain Breeze₹849The categories where he is impossible are the ones he has already optimised. The categories where he is easy are the ones he has never thought about, and home fragrance is the clearest example in the house: very few men of that generation have a view on what a study should smell like, and almost none have gone out and bought one for themselves. That makes the gift both novel and unopposed. Mountain Breeze is the version to buy because it is furthest from the floral and sweet registers a sceptic is expecting, and the reviews from exactly this scenario are unusually emphatic.
The test: can you name his preferred brand in the category? If yes, do not buy in it. If you have no idea because he has never mentioned it, that is the category.
2
DIAGNOSIS TWO · HIS ROOM
Aim at the desk, not at the drawing room
SOSA Mountain Breeze 130ml reed diffuserMountain Breeze 130ml₹1,349The study, the desk, the reading chair, the corner where the newspapers live — most fathers have one territory in the house and it is small. Gifts almost never go there. They go to the drawing room, become household property, and stop being his within a day. A 50ml at ₹849 with three or four reeds is precisely the right size for that territory, and the whole gesture takes one sentence when you hand it over: this is for your desk. Cedar in particular suits a room somebody concentrates in, which is the note our home-office buyers write to us about most.
The test: name the surface it is going to stand on before you buy. If you cannot picture the surface, you are buying for the house rather than for him.
3
DIAGNOSIS THREE · NOTHING TO MAINTAIN
If it needs managing, it will be admired and shelved
SOSA Fresh & Grounded reed diffuser duoFresh & Grounded duo₹1,548A reed diffuser needs six reeds put in once and then nothing — no socket, no water, no topping up, no flame, nothing to switch off before bed. That is the property that decides whether a gift is used or stored, and it matters more with a recipient who has spent his life avoiding gadgets that require attention. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 is a lovely machine and it wants a tank filled; the Boond at ₹899 is a small USB one for a desk. Both are right for a father who enjoys a small ritual and wrong for one who does not.
The test: how many things must happen each week for the gift to keep working? For a reed the honest answer is one flip of the reeds, and even that is optional.

Mountain Breeze, and why a study is the room it was built for

There is a practical reason this particular composition suits the room a man reads and works in, and it is not atmosphere. Pine and cedar are dry materials. They do not coat a room the way a sweet or floral fragrance does; they sit in the air as something closer to open outdoor air with a resinous edge, which is why people describe the effect as being able to think in the room rather than as the room smelling nice. Sage between them keeps the composition green rather than letting it settle into timber, and the whole thing at 9.4 on our scale is deep — which is a different property from loud, and one that people confuse constantly.

That distinction matters here because this family of pages otherwise argues for softness. In an older household you generally want less, and the softest thing we make, Evening Calm at 8.9, is the right default across a parents' home. The study is the exception, and the reed count is how you square it: three reeds of Mountain Breeze in a small closed room gives a low, steady presence rather than an announcement, and four is right for a room he is in all day. Six belongs in a living room and nowhere near a desk. If he complains it is too much, the fix is free and takes ten seconds.

The other thing worth saying is what pine is not. Synthetic pine is one of the two cheapest materials in perfumery and it lives in floor cleaner, which is where most Indian noses met it — so a sceptical father's first reaction to the words “pine diffuser” is entirely reasonable and you should expect it. Real Himalayan pine has none of that flat sharpness, and the review that turns up again and again is some version of “was terrified this would smell like Phenyl — it's the opposite”. Underneath it, every SOSA reed sits on a heat-stable CCT carrier rather than the DPG most of the category uses, which is why the pine in this bottle stays pine through a monsoon instead of going bitter.

The table — routed by his life

The point of this table is the rows where the answer is not a reed diffuser. A father who spends two hours a day in a car and forty minutes in the drawing room should not be given a bottle for the drawing room, however good the bottle is.

The three answers for a father, in one row
The SOSA principle
He is not difficult. He is specific — in four categories, and indifferent in all the rest.
Buy in the categories where he has no opinion, and the reputation for being impossible to shop for disappears in one purchase.

The sweet box, honestly assessed

A fragrance company arguing against mithai should be read sceptically, so here is the fair version. For a visit to a father or to any elder, sweets are frequently the correct object — where there is a puja, where the box is opened and passed round, where the greeting takes the form of something shared, nothing else does that job and a diffuser does not pretend to. Sweets also cost nobody any shelf space and oblige nobody to display anything, which is more than can be said for most decorative gifts.

The three limits are the same three every time and they are not moral objections. A box is finished inside a week, so it never reaches the quiet months after the festival. It arrives from a great many people at once, so it is the most duplicated gift of the year. And it carries dietary exposure — a doctor's instruction, a restriction, a fast — which a father in particular will not raise while being handed something. None of that makes it a bad gift. It makes it an evening gift. Take the sweets because the evening asks for them, and give the thing that is still working in his study in December separately. That is the arrangement, and it is not a compromise.

Gifts go to the drawing room and become household property within a day. Aim at the desk instead.

What I would buy for a father, in order, ending with the row that says what SOSA does not make. That last row is the one that matters most on this page, because the note people ask for when buying for a father is almost always oud or sandalwood.

Mountain Breeze with Morning Freshness, 50ml each. The green one goes on his desk with three reeds; the bright lemon-and-mint one goes wherever the house starts its day — the hall, the kitchen end, a bathroom. A note from Sonal

The review I think about most often on this scent came from a customer in Delhi who bought it for her father's study, described him as the hardest person in her family to buy fragrance for, and then had him text her asking for a second one. I have read a great many reviews and that one taught me something specific: the resistance is to the category as people imagine it, not to the thing itself. He was not against a pleasant room. He was against what he assumed a scented product would be — sweet, floral, insistent, faintly artificial — and Mountain Breeze is none of those.

Which is why the material choice matters more here than anywhere else in the range. Synthetic pine is cheap and it is in floor cleaner, so a sceptical man's first association with the word is not unreasonable and it is our problem to solve rather than his to get over. Real Himalayan pine with sage and cedar reads as outdoor air with a dry edge. It does not coat a room. You can work in it, which is the actual brief for a study.

The last thing I would say is about ambition. Do not buy him a machine because it is more expensive. A Sukoon at ₹1,899 is a fine gift for a father who likes a small daily ritual and a slightly irritating one for a father who does not, and the ₹849 bottle that needs nothing after the first minute will be in use in March when the machine is in a cupboard. Match the object to the man. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Diwali gift for a father?
Mountain Breeze at ₹849 for 50ml or ₹1,349 for 130ml, placed in his study or beside his reading chair with three or four reeds. Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar at 9.4 on the SOSA strength scale — dry and green rather than sweet, the least gendered scent in the range, and our standing recommendation for anyone hard to buy for. If he drives constantly, the Safar at ₹3,999 is the better answer.
My father says he does not want anything. What then?
Take him at his word about objects and buy a consumable instead. What most people in that position are objecting to is accumulation rather than generosity — a thing that has to be found a place, kept and eventually explained. A reed diffuser is used up over six to eight weeks on the 50ml or fourteen to eighteen on the 130ml, and the glass bottle is refillable if he wants it and gone if he does not.
Is there an oud or sandalwood reed diffuser at SOSA?
No. There is no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed diffuser, and no hotel-inspired reed either — the hotel scents are water-based and go only into an ultrasonic machine. The only oud anywhere at SOSA is the Nawaab attar, a personal skin fragrance with white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, at ₹399 for 3ml, ₹699 for 6ml and ₹1,199 for 12ml. In the reed line, Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the nearest thing to a dry resinous register.
How many reeds should he use in a study?
Three for a soft steady presence, four for a room he is in all day, and six only in a living room. Every bottle ships with six fibre reeds and holding some back is the intended use. Depth and volume are different things: Mountain Breeze at 9.4 is the deepest woody we make, but three reeds in a small closed room keeps it low and continuous rather than announced.
Should I gift a candle to my father?
Only a plain one, and only as a modest gesture — the core 80g jar candles at ₹379, or ₹664 for a two-pack, are message-free and entirely appropriate. Never a candle with a printed message on it: in a house full of visiting relatives it becomes a line read aloud, and a joke from a child to a father lands differently in company than it does in private. A candle also needs lighting and remembering; a reed diffuser needs nothing.
