For somebody whose life is currently conducted out of a single bag between three locations, those properties are worth more than an extra hour of longevity. Given that, the honest recommendation splits by person rather than by product. Somebody who is genuinely interested in fragrance, reads about it, wants to try things and enjoys the difference between registers should be given attars, and preferably more than one, because range is what they are short of. Somebody who wants to smell good with minimal thought, travels constantly, and treats their possessions roughly should be given a solid. And it is worth saying that these are not exclusive: plenty of people end up with a solid in the bag for reapplication and an attar at home for days when they care, which is a perfectly sensible arrangement and a good structure for a gift that includes both.
