Walk into a beautifully kept home or a good hotel and there is a scent that feels expensive before you can name it - clean, calm, quietly there. I am Sonal, a perfumer, and the secret is far less about money than people think. Here is what those spaces actually do, and how to copy the effect honestly.
Quick answers — read this first
What’s the secret? Consistency and restraint - one quiet, well-composed scent diffused evenly and gently, on top of a truly clean, aired room.

Is it about money? Less than you think. The effect comes from method - a clean base, a single composed scent, even diffusion - not from a high price.

How do I copy it? Clean and air the room first, then run one composed, hotel-style scent gently through a diffuser. Restraint, not intensity.
The short answer
The base. Truly clean, aired rooms - scent never hides a stale base.
The scent. One quiet, well-composed fragrance, diffused evenly.
The method. Restraint and consistency over intensity.
Honest note. Fragrance finishes a clean room; it does not clean it.

What expensive spaces actually do

After years of composing scent, I have come to think the ‘expensive smell’ people chase is really three habits, all of them copyable.

They start clean. The single biggest factor is an unglamorous one: the room is truly clean and aired. Expensive-feeling spaces never rely on fragrance to cover a stale base. Scent sits on top of clean air, which is why it reads as effortless rather than as cover-up.
They commit to one scent. Walk through a well-run hotel and you notice the same quiet signature everywhere. There is no clash of three air fresheners. One composed scent, used consistently, is what makes a space feel coherent and considered.
They keep it gentle and even. The scent is never loud. It is diffused softly and continuously so you are wrapped in it rather than hit by it. Restraint is the whole trick - a little, everywhere, all the time.
Notice what is not on this list: a huge budget. The effect comes from method - clean, single, gentle - far more than from how much the bottle cost.

How to copy the effect

Here is the honest, low-cost way to give your own home that quiet, expensive feeling.

Clean and air first. Open the windows, deal with any odour at its source, and let the room breathe. This is the step people skip, and it is the most important one. Fragrance finishes a clean room; it cannot rescue a stale one.

Choose one composed scent. Pick a single, quietly elegant fragrance and use it consistently. This is exactly the brief I set for the SOSA Hotel Collection - a water-based ultrasonic diffuser fragrance in seven scents, each my own interpretation of the hushed calm a famous hotel is known for. Quiet Luxury leans white tea, bergamot and cedar; White Tea Serenity is spa-clean. To be honest and clear, these are independent hotel-inspired interpretations, not the hotels’ actual scents, and SOSA is not affiliated with the hotels named - the names only describe the style.

Diffuse gently and evenly. A few drops in your diffuser’s water tank, run softly, so the scent is a continuous background rather than a spike. Resist the urge to overdo it - the expensive feeling lives in restraint.

Expensive-smelling is not a price. It is a clean room, one quiet scent, diffused softly.

My honest summary: you can spend a great deal on home fragrance and still not get this effect if the room is not clean and the scent is loud or inconsistent. Or you can spend modestly, follow the method, and have a home that smells considered. The craft is in the restraint.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and the one thing every great hotel taught me is that scent is the first thing you notice and the last thing you forget. I wanted to bottle that feeling for the home.

So the Hotel Collection is seven water-based diffuser fragrances, each my own interpretation of the style a famous hotel is known for - composed in our own lab, made to run cleanly through a SOSA ultrasonic diffuser. Please use the SOSA diffuser fragrance only; raw essential or carrier oils are thick and can clog the misting plate.

To be clear and honest: these are inspired interpretations, not the hotels' actual proprietary scents. SOSA is not affiliated with or endorsed by the hotels named - the names just describe the scent style. I would rather you knew exactly what you are buying: a perfumer's take on that hushed, expensive calm, at an honest price.
