Every mall retailer who asks me this has already tried the obvious thing and turned their own fragrance up. It did not work, and the reason it did not work is the most useful thing anyone can tell you about trading inside somebody else's building.
Quick answers — read this first
Why can I smell other shops inside my own store? Because your unit is not a sealed box and you do not control its air. A mall store is an opening in a wall inside a much larger air system that somebody else designed, operates and balances. Air moves between tenancies through the shopfront, through the shared ceiling void above the demise line, through a shared return path, and through service penetrations that were never properly closed after a fit-out. Whatever a neighbour releases into that system can reach you, and no setting on any machine of mine changes that.
Can I not just make my own fragrance stronger? No, and it is worth understanding why not, because it is the standard advice and it is wrong. Two smells in one volume of air do not cancel; they arrive together and read as a third thing that is worse than either. You also end up with an interior that is overpowering to your own staff while the front of the store still smells of the corridor, so you have paid for a problem at both ends. Fragrance is never used to cover, deal with or stand in for another smell, and any supplier who offers you that is selling.
What actually works, and what does it cost? Finding the path and putting it to the people who own it. From SOSA the honest total here is ₹0 - the useful actions are a log of when it happens, a walk of your own unit to find where it is loudest, a written question to mall management about pressure and the building's air handling, and a question to your fit-out contractor about whether the demise line is properly closed above the ceiling. If you still want the store scented afterwards, that is a Vaayu at ₹11,999.
The short answer
Short answer: because a mall unit is not a sealed volume and does not control its own air. Neighbouring smells arrive through the shopfront, a shared ceiling void, a shared return path or unsealed service penetrations at the demise line. The work is finding the path and putting pressure and airflow to mall management and your HVAC contractor. Turning your own fragrance up produces two smells rather than one.
The pick: no purchase at all yet - log it, walk it, and write to mall management, which costs ₹0. If you still want the store scented afterwards, one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) placed well inside the store, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) in a single-room unit.
Next step: tell us what time of day it happens, where in the unit it is loudest and whether it continues when your shutter is down, and we will tell you which path you are probably looking at and who owns it - Ask for a retail scenting plan.
This is a tenancy and airflow problem wearing fragrance clothing. The diagnosis is free, the escalation is a letter, and the only thing a scent machine can do is come afterwards.

Why does a mall-based watch store pick up smells from nearby shops?
Because your store is not a sealed volume and, more to the point, its air is not yours. A mall unit is an opening in a wall inside a much larger air system that somebody else designed, operates and balances, and air moves between tenancies whether or not anybody intended it to. There are usually four paths. The first is the shopfront itself, which on most units is simply open or is a door that spends the day opening; corridor air comes in continuously and it carries whatever the corridor is carrying. The second is the ceiling void: demise walls very often stop at the suspended ceiling rather than continuing to the slab, so two tenancies share a single volume above head height even though they look separate from the floor. The third is a shared return path, where several units feed back into the same air handling and the balance between supply and return decides which way air travels across a threshold. The fourth is the least glamorous and the most common - service penetrations, cable trays, ducts and pipework crossing the demise line, cut during a fit-out and never properly closed. Pressure, fresh-air intake, filtration and balancing are not a fragrance supplier's business, and I hand them over rather than guess at them: they belong to mall management for the building's system and to your own HVAC contractor for whatever sits inside your demise. What I can tell you with complete confidence is the thing you were probably hoping I would not. You cannot answer this by turning your own fragrance up. Two smells sharing one volume of air do not cancel each other; they arrive together and read as a third thing that is worse than either alone. The store ends up overpowering for the advisor standing in it nine hours a day while the front two metres still smell of the corridor, which is the worst of both outcomes and costs money to achieve. Fragrance is never used to cover, deal with or stand in for another smell. So the work is diagnostic and it is free. Log it for a week: what time it appears, whether it is daily, whether it stops on a Monday, whether it continues when your shutter is down overnight - because a smell that is present in a closed unit at seven in the morning did not walk in through the shopfront. Then walk your own store slowly with a nose that has been outside, and find where it is loudest: at the front means the corridor, at a demise wall or under a ceiling tile means the void, at a grille means the system. Then write to mall management describing what you found and asking what the building's air handling does at those times, and ask your fit-out contractor whether your demise line is properly closed above the ceiling. From SOSA, the honest total on this page is ₹0. If afterwards you still want your own store to have a considered air of its own - a legitimate and separate decision - that is one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 placed well inside the unit rather than at the shopfront, or one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 in a single room. Ask for a retail scenting plan once you know how the air is arriving.
You do not own your air. Find the path - shopfront, ceiling void, shared return, an open demise line - then put it to mall management and your HVAC contractor. From SOSA that is ₹0, and turning your own fragrance up makes it worse.
If you decide afterwards that the store should have an air of its own, the machine is one SOSA Vaayu - rated to 1000m³, wall or HVAC mountable so it can sit deep in the unit rather than at the front, under 38dB, with a key-lock. ₹11,999. It is not an answer to the corridor and I will not present it as one.
Nothing here is an answer to a neighbouring smell, and I would rather say that before the product cards than after them. The images link to the product pages so you can check the specifications when the airflow question has been answered by the people who own it.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, auto-stop and key-lock. Wall and HVAC mountable, which in a mall unit matters because it lets the source sit deep inside the store rather than near the shopfront where the corridor is.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. In a small unit this is the honest buy, and a Vaayu would be six times the price for a fraction of its rated coverage. Neither machine is an answer to what arrives from the corridor.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.
Three pieces of information, gathered over about a week, and all of them free. Without them you are negotiating with mall management from a position of having noticed something.

Log it before you argue about it
A pattern in time tells you more than a strong opinion does
Keep a sheet at the till for a week and have whoever is on the floor note the time whenever they notice it, in one word. Patterns emerge quickly and they are diagnostic. Late morning and early evening every day usually points at a neighbouring trading pattern. Sudden and short points at a delivery or a cleaning cycle. Continuous points at a structural path rather than an event. The single most useful entry is whether it is present at seven in the morning with your shutter still down, because a smell inside a closed unit did not walk in through the shopfront and you have just eliminated half the possibilities. A week of one-word entries is worth more in a management meeting than any amount of describing.
Tip: Note the weather and whether the mall was busy. Both change how the building's system behaves.
Where it is strongest tells you which path it took
Stand outside for ten minutes, then walk the store slowly from the shopfront to the back wall, then along each demise wall, then under each supply and return grille, and then - if you can safely get someone to do it - have a look above a ceiling tile near the demise line. Loudest at the front means the corridor and the shopfront. Loudest along a party wall or under a tile means the ceiling void. Loudest at a grille means the system. Each of those has a different owner and a different conversation attached to it, which is why guessing costs you months. This is also the point at which many retailers discover a cable tray or duct crossing the demise line through a hole nobody ever closed.
Tip: Do the walk twice on different days. One reading is an anecdote.
Pressure and balancing are mall management's and your contractor's, not mine
Write to mall management with your log and your walk: what you noticed, when, where it was loudest, and whether it persists with the shutter down. Ask what the building's air handling does at those times, whether your unit's position in the pressure regime can be looked at, and whether the neighbouring tenancy has extraction that is performing as designed. Separately, ask your own fit-out contractor whether the demise line is properly closed above the ceiling and whether service penetrations were sealed. I am a perfumer, and none of that is mine to specify - what I can tell you is that no setting on a Vaayu at ₹11,999 substitutes for that conversation.
Tip: Send it in writing and ask for a written answer. This is a tenancy matter and it behaves like one.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
A mall unit is an opening in somebody else's air system, so the question of what your store smells of is partly a tenancy question and not entirely yours to answer.
You can decide your own register and your own level. You cannot decide the pressure regime of a building you rent four hundred square metres of.
Deep in the unit, not at the front: SOSA Vaayu is wall and HVAC mountable, so the source can sit well inside the store rather than near the shopfront. ₹11,999.
Waterless by design: SOSA Vaayu adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine, not a claim about your stock. ₹11,999.
You rent the floor, the walls and the shopfront. You do not rent the air, and any supplier who sells you a solution to somebody else's air is selling you a story.

Why placement is the only lever you actually hold
Deep in the unit, out of the return, never at the shopfront
Two machines cover almost every watch store in the country, and which one you need is decided by floor size and air path rather than by what your neighbours do. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA before a rollout. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA watch-boutique specification
The tenancy conversation first, then a machine chosen by size
Establish the path and escalate it before you buy anything, and expect the honest total from SOSA on this page to be nothing. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or case layout; it is never used to cover or deal with another smell, and it is never a substitute for ventilation, extraction or building air handling. Pressure, fresh-air intake, filtration and balancing belong to mall management and your HVAC contractor, and I hand them over rather than guess. No one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell or spend. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
The reason this question is so common is that a mall unit looks like a room and behaves like a junction. From the inside you see four walls, a ceiling and a shopfront. What is actually there is an opening into a shared corridor, a ceiling void that very often runs straight over the demise wall into the next tenancy, a return path shared with several other stores, and a set of service penetrations that were cut during somebody's fit-out and closed by nobody. Air moves through all of it, all day, in whichever direction the building's pressure decides.
So my first advice is diagnostic rather than commercial, and it is free. Log it for a week with times. Walk the unit slowly with a nose that has been outside. Find out whether it is still there at seven in the morning with the shutter down, because that single fact eliminates half the possible paths. Then write to mall management and to your fit-out contractor with what you found. I deliberately stop there, because pressure, fresh-air intake, extraction and balancing are engineering work and I am a perfumer. A fragrance supplier who starts advising you on your building's air handling has wandered a long way outside their trade.
What I can promise is that turning your own fragrance up will not work. Two smells in one volume of air do not cancel - they combine, and the result is worse than either. You get an interior that is too much for the advisor standing in it all day while the front of the store still smells of the corridor. If, after the tenancy conversation, you want your store to have an air of its own, that is a real and separate decision: under 750 sq ft a Sukoon at ₹1,899, past about 1,500 sq ft a Vaayu at ₹11,999 placed deep in the unit. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my mall-based watch store pick up smells from nearby shops?
Because a mall unit is not a sealed volume and does not control its own air. There are usually four paths: the shopfront, which is open to the corridor all day; the ceiling void, because demise walls often stop at the suspended ceiling rather than the slab; a shared return path serving several tenancies; and service penetrations cut during a fit-out and never properly closed. Which path you have decides who you need to talk to.
Can a stronger fragrance stop neighbouring smells entering my store?
No. Two smells sharing one volume of air do not cancel each other out - they arrive together and read as a third thing that is worse than either alone. You also end up with an interior that is overpowering for the advisor standing in it all day while the front of the store still smells of the corridor. Fragrance is never used to cover or deal with another smell, and a supplier who offers that is selling.
Who is responsible for airflow between shops in a mall?
Mall management for the building's air handling, pressure regime and the performance of neighbouring extraction, and your own HVAC contractor for whatever sits inside your demise. Your fit-out contractor owns the building fabric question of whether the demise line is closed above the ceiling and whether service penetrations were sealed. None of it is a fragrance supplier's work, and I hand those questions over rather than guess at them.
What does it cost to deal with neighbouring smells in a mall store?
From SOSA, nothing. The useful actions are a week's log of times and one-word notes, two slow walks of your own unit to find where it is loudest, a question to your fit-out contractor about the demise line, and a written letter to mall management asking for a written answer. If you decide afterwards that you want your store to have an air of its own, that is Rs 1,899 for a single room or Rs 11,999 for a larger trading floor.
Where should a scent machine go in a mall unit?
Well inside the store rather than near the shopfront, and out of the direct path of a return grille where the output is drawn away before anyone experiences it. The SOSA Vaayu is wall and HVAC mountable, which is what makes deep placement practical. But placement is a decision about your own store's air, not a response to the corridor, and I would not want it read as one.
The cheaper honest answer: A single-room mall unit under about 750 sq ft is a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, and a Vaayu at that size would be the wrong buy.

If you decide afterwards that your store should have an air of its own, the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers up to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, and mounts on a wall or into the HVAC so it can sit deep in the unit; under about 750 sq ft it is a Sukoon at ₹1,899. Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference.
