Two reasons, and the second one surprises people: your nose has learned the association, and perfumery and cleaning products often use literally the same materials.
Quick answers — read this first
Is it just association? Mostly - but not only. Cheap lemon in perfume and lemon in cleaning products are frequently the same synthetic material at different concentrations.

Does price change it? Somewhat. A real cold-pressed lemon oil is more complex and reads less like detergent, though the association still lingers.

What escapes it entirely? Bergamot. Adaa is built on it rather than on lemon.
The short answer
Clean is an effect, not a family. It comes from three things together: a bright citrus-green top, no sugar anywhere, and a clean white musk base that reads as skin.
The non-negotiable. No sugar. Sweetness is the single thing that stops a fragrance reading as clean, and it is in most "fresh" bottles. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free.
SOSA in one line. Alcohol-free, DPG-free, IFRA-compliant attars on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, 6-8 hours on skin, 3ml / 6ml / 12ml, ₹379-₹1,199, hand-blended in Pune.
Start here. For clean, Adaa 3ml at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the only genuinely clean composition I make.
What actually creates a "clean" impression (illustrative)Clean white musk base — the skin-like effect that lastsCitrus and green top — the fresh impression, first 40 minutesSugar or heavy florals — where "clean" stops reading as clean
Illustrative only. Clean is an effect rather than a fragrance family: a bright citrus-green opening gives the first impression, and a clean white musk base is what still reads as clean at hour four.

Straight answer
So why do lemon fragrances smell like floor cleaner?
Two reasons stacked. First, learned association: a century of lemon-scented cleaning has taught essentially every nose to read lemon as domestic hygiene, and that meaning is applied automatically regardless of context. Second - and this is the part people find surprising - the materials are often literally the same. The inexpensive synthetic lemon used in a low-cost fresh fragrance and the one used in a surface cleaner frequently come from the same industrial supply. Your nose is not confused; it is correct.
Short version: they are often the same material. Your nose is not making a mistake - it is recognising something accurately.
Want the short path? Adaa uses bergamot, which cleaning products almost never do.

The 3 reasons, in order

This is a question people ask slightly embarrassed, as though their nose were unsophisticated. It is the opposite - the nose is being accurate.

What "clean" actually means
Clean is not a fragrance family - it is an effect, produced by a specific combination: bright citrus and green materials on top, no sugar anywhere, and a clean white musk base that reads as skin rather than as perfume. Remove any one of those three and the effect collapses.
1
Criterion one
Reason one: a century of conditioning
Lemon, lime and pine have been the standard scents of cleanliness in domestic products since the early twentieth century. That is long enough that the association is essentially universal and effectively permanent. No perfumer can undo it; they can only avoid it.
2
Criterion two
Reason two: shared materials
The genuinely surprising part. Inexpensive synthetic citrus materials are produced industrially at scale and used across fragrance, detergent and household cleaning. A cheap lemon fresh fragrance and a surface spray can contain the same molecule at different concentrations - so the resemblance is not an illusion.

My one pick
Escape the association: Adaa, bergamot-led.
Shop Adaa - from ₹379 →
3
Criterion three
Reason three: concentration and context
Cleaning products use citrus loudly and simply, with nothing underneath. A fragrance that also uses it loudly and simply will read the same way. What differentiates fine fragrance is complexity beneath the citrus - which is why the fix is structural as well as a material swap.
4
Criterion four
Citrus gives the impression; the anchor gives the hours
Citrus materials are small and volatile - beautiful for half an hour and then gone, faster still in Indian heat. A clean fragrance that lasts needs something dry underneath that shares the brightness: green cardamom for aromatic lift, neroli to bridge, then the musk. Without that anchor you have forty clean minutes and seven hours of nothing.
The buying checklist
The criteria - and how to check each one yourself
What to look for Why it matters for a clean scent How to check
Clean white musk base This is what still reads as clean at hour four What is the base note?
No sugar anywhere Sweetness is what breaks the clean effect Check for vanilla, tonka, amber
Bright citrus-green top Gives the first fresh impression Bergamot, neroli, cardamom?
A real anchor under the citrus Citrus alone is gone in 40 minutes What holds the brightness?
Close projection Clean is a close-range effect Does it sit near the skin?
Oil base, no alcohol No sting, no sharp evaporation Ask: alcohol-free? DPG-free?
Small dose Over-applying destroys the clean effect One dab, not two
Stated longevity Clean should not mean short Hours on skin, in writing
"Cheap perfume lemon and floor-cleaner lemon are sometimes the same molecule. You were right."

Where SOSA sits - and where another attar might suit you better

I tell people this because the question is usually asked apologetically, and it should not be. Recognising a material accurately is a sign of a good nose, not a naive one.

The honest position
Your nose was right. It often is the same material.
Where I think we earn a place on your shortlist: real bergamot rather than an industrial synthetic citrus, with green cardamom and neroli giving it structure. Where another house might suit you better: a fine cold-pressed lemon cologne is a real pleasure if you can hear past the association - some people can and some cannot.
Three things "clean fragrance" advice gets wrong
✕
"Clean means weak." It does not. Clean is about the materials - no sugar, clean musk, bright top - not about strength. A clean fragrance can last eight hours and still read as skin.
✕
"All fresh fragrances smell the same." Most of the cheap ones do, because they lean on the same handful of inexpensive fresh materials. The difference is what sits underneath - real cardamom and neroli, or nothing.
✕
"Clean is boring." Only when it is thin. A clean composition with real material is quietly interesting all day - reviews here are illustrative, not a guarantee.

Switch to bergamot and look for structure underneath it. Adaa is my version of both.

The SOSA attar range

All four are alcohol-free and DPG-free in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. No lemon, lime or pine anywhere; Adaa uses real bergamot.

A note from Sonal

"I just want to smell clean" is the single most common thing anyone says to me, and it is a harder brief than it sounds - because clean is not a fragrance family. It is an effect, and it takes three things at once: a bright citrus-green opening, a clean white musk base that reads as skin rather than as perfume, and no sugar anywhere.

That third condition is why so many bottles sold as fresh do not stay clean. Sweetness is inexpensive and it tests well at a counter, so it finds its way into almost everything - and by hour three you are wearing something that announces itself as perfume rather than as a person who is well-groomed.

Adaa is the only genuinely clean thing I make, and I would rather say that plainly than stretch the word across my whole range. I do not make an aquatic and I do not make a standalone white musk. If those are what you want, buy them from someone who does - and if a clean citrus-green-musk is what you are after, mine is worth your ₹379.

Frequently asked questions

Why do so many fresh perfumes smell the same?
Because the inexpensive route to freshness uses a small set of the same synthetic materials, with very little underneath them. The difference between one clean fragrance and another shows up at hour two, not at the counter - so test on skin and wait.
Which SOSA attar smells cleanest?
Adaa - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the only genuinely clean composition in the range; Ameeri is warm, Mastani is rich and Nawaab is deep, and I would not sell any of them as fresh. From ₹379.
Is Adaa soapy?
No, and that is deliberate. Soapiness comes from aldehydes and powdery musks; Adaa uses a transparent clean musk with green cardamom and neroli over it, which reads as clean skin rather than as a bar of soap.
Does "clean" mean the fragrance is weak?
No. Clean is a property of the materials - no sugar, a clean musk base, a bright top - not of the strength. SOSA attars wear 6-8 hours on skin, and the clean effect lasts as long as the scent does because the musk base is what creates it.
How long does a clean attar last on skin?
6-8 hours for the SOSA range, slightly longer on warm or oily skin. The citrus impression fades within the first hour; what remains, and what still reads as clean, is the musk base.
