Send us the floor, the walls and roughly how much textile is in the room. Stone, glass, lacquer and steel mean the fragrance stays airborne, so we go cooler, simpler and lower. Oak, jute, linen, wool, plaster and books mean the fragrance is absorbed and the top notes disappear, so we choose something with more base and expect the room to hold it for weeks. Mixed rooms, which most Indian homes are, get answered from whichever surface dominates the space you actually live in. Which way does it face, and is it cooled
Heat amplifies sweetness, air conditioning removes the top
A west-facing living room in a hot city and a north-facing air-conditioned one need different answers even if they are furnished identically. Heat makes sweet notes far louder through the afternoon, which is why we steer bright hot rooms away from gourmand and heavy florals entirely. Air conditioning does the reverse, flattening the volatile opening within minutes, so a cooled home needs more weight in the base and slightly more intensity to register at all. We also ask whether you keep windows open, because a naturally ventilated home loses fragrance outward and needs the machine placed on the incoming side rather than near the opening.

What does the house already smell of
The question that sometimes stops the sale
If you cook every day, we will talk about extraction and scheduling before we talk about fragrance. If there is damp after monsoon, a musty store room, a dry drain trap or a recent fit-out that is still off-gassing, we will tell you to deal with that first, because scent over any of those gives you both at once. This is the part of the consultation that occasionally ends with us recommending you do not buy anything yet, and that is deliberate. A machine running over an unresolved smell makes the house worse, not better, and no fragrance in our range or anybody else's changes that.
Tip: if the house is not aired and clean, fragrance is the wrong purchase this month.

The same oil behaves differently in a marble apartment and in a house full of wool and books. So I ask for photographs, and for which way the main room faces, and whether they cook at home. What I can tell you plainly is how it works.
