This is the question I most enjoy being asked, because the honest answer has four parts and none of them is mysterious. Refinement is not a quality that descends on a bottle. It is four decisions, and you can work out which of them a fragrance has had made for it.
Quick answers — read this first
What are the four things, briefly? The material - whether a note comes from the plant or from a synthetic standing in for it. The number of materials - how many things are doing the work, which decides whether a composition reads as one thing or as three. The transitions - whether the phases overlap or queue, which is the difference between smooth and sharp. And the carrier - what the whole thing is dissolved in, which is most of the bottle and the part almost nobody prints. Four checkable things, and no mystery in any of them.
Which SOSA attar shows this best, and what is ruled out?Nawaab at ₹399 for 3ml, because it is the most expensive attar in the line to fill: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, with no synthetic oudh in it. That is the point of it as an example - and it is also the heaviest thing we make for skin, so if oud, smoke, tobacco or leather is out for you, Nawaab is out too and the bottle is Adaa at ₹379. The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is not the way to explore any of this.
Does more expensive material mean I will like it more? No, and the two get conflated constantly. Raw-material cost tells you what a composition is made of; it tells you nothing about whether the smell is yours. Nawaab is the costliest of our four to fill and it is also the one most people rule out, because oud and leather are not for everyone. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one - so buy the 3ml, wear it a full day, and let your own nose settle it.
The short answer
Short answer: four things, and all four can be checked. The quality of the material - whether a note is the real thing or a synthetic standing in for it. The number of materials, which decides whether a composition reads as one smell or several. The transitions between phases, which is what smooth and sharp actually describe. And the carrier, which is most of the bottle. SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 for 3ml is the worked example, being the most expensive attar in the line to fill with no synthetic oudh in it - and it carries oud, aged tobacco and leather.
The pick: the 3ml of SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, no synthetic oudh, alcohol-free, and it wears 6-8 hours. If oud, tobacco or leather is out for you, then SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml is the lightest of the four and carries none of those, though it does carry jasmine sambac.
Next step: send me two fragrances you have owned - one you thought was well made and one you did not - and I will tell you which of the four things you were probably hearing - Ask for an attar recommendation.
Four checkable things rather than one unmeasurable one. Nawaab is the example because we can tell you exactly what is in it and that it is the most expensive of our four to make.
SOSA Nawaab - six notes published, and no synthetic oudh in it
What makes one perfume smell more refined than another?
Four things, and the useful part is that all four can be checked before you spend anything. One: the quality of the material. Most notes can be built from a real raw material or from a synthetic standing in for it, and the real one usually carries more small facets - which is why it reads as rounder rather than as a single tone. Where we can say this, we publish it: no synthetic oudh in Nawaab, no synthetic rose in Ameeri, real jasmine sambac and real rose absolute in Mastani. Two: how many materials are doing the work. A composition with very few materials has nothing to hide behind; each one arrives at full volume and reads as itself, which is often what people mean by thin or loud. More materials, properly chosen, let a note be supported from underneath so that it reads as part of something. Three: the transitions. A fragrance keeps changing while you wear it, because its materials evaporate at different speeds, and the question is whether you can hear the handovers. Overlapping phases read as smooth; a gap followed by one material arriving alone reads as sharp. Four: the carrier. Most of what is in any bottle is not the fragrance but what it is dissolved in. Ours is a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, alcohol-free, with no DPG carriers, and the absence of alcohol removes the loudest phase a fragrance has - the first thirty seconds in which a spray's alcohol is leaving. Now the worked example, because abstractions are cheap. SOSA makes exactly four attars and Nawaab is the most expensive of them to fill: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, six materials, no synthetic oudh, hand-blended in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer, wearing 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Its 3ml is ₹399, twenty rupees above Adaa's, which is nothing like the difference in what goes into it - material cost is real and it is not linear. And here is the part that keeps this honest: Nawaab is also the bottle most readers of this cluster should refuse. It carries oud, aged tobacco and leather and it is the heaviest thing we make for skin, so if any of those is on your list then the answer is Adaa at ₹379 instead, which carries jasmine sambac and no oud at all. Buy the 3ml either way, because we sell no sampler, and not the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055, which is three full-size attars. Finally: expensive material is not a promise of anything. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind.Ask for an attar recommendation and tell me what you have owned.
Refinement is four checkable things: the material, how many materials, how the phases hand over, and the carrier. Nawaab is the worked example at ₹399 for 3ml, the costliest of our four to fill with no synthetic oudh - and it is also the one to refuse if oud, tobacco or leather is out.
The bottle is one SOSA Nawaab - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron over aged tobacco, leather and amber, with no synthetic oudh in it. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹399 for the 3ml, and it is the heaviest thing we make for skin.
The worked example first, and then the bottle for a reader who has followed the reasoning and still does not want oud. Both publish their full note lists, which is how you check any of the four things for yourself.
White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, with no synthetic oudh in it. Six materials, and the most expensive attar in the line to fill. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, wears 6-8 hours. It is also the heaviest thing we make for skin. ₹399 for the 3ml.
Bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base. Fewer materials than Nawaab and deliberately so - a thin, dry structure rather than a deep one - and the only one of our four attars with no oud. Wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, jasmine disclosed.
3ml, 6ml and 12ml at ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199. Published notes: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, with no synthetic oudh. An alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, blended to IFRA standards, phthalate-free, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune. It wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Published positioning: masculine and royal. The only SOSA attar with no floral note.
In the order in which they change what you smell. The fourth one is the one nobody asks about and it accounts for most of what is in the bottle.
1
Start with the material itself
A real raw material usually carries more small facets than the synthetic standing in for it
Almost any note can be built two ways: from the plant or resin itself, or from a synthetic that does the same job for a fraction of the cost. The real material generally brings a crowd of small facets along with the main smell, and that crowd is what makes a note read as rounded rather than as a single tone. A synthetic is not a failure - much of modern perfumery would not exist without them, and some materials cannot ethically be harvested any other way - but the difference is audible. Where we can be specific we publish it: no synthetic oudh in Nawaab, no synthetic rose in Ameeri, real jasmine sambac and real rose absolute in Mastani.
Tip: Look for material claims specific enough to be wrong, rather than adjectives that cannot be checked.
One bottle of Nawaab from ₹399 is the whole purchase here.
Few materials means nothing to hide behind; thin overlap means you hear every handover
These two go together in practice. A composition built from very few materials has each of them arriving at full volume with nothing underneath to support it, which is often what people are describing when they say a fragrance smells flat or loud. More materials, well chosen, let a note be held up from below so that it reads as part of a whole. The related decision is timing: because materials evaporate at different speeds, a fragrance is always changing, and the question is whether the handovers are audible. Overlap reads as smooth. A gap followed by one material arriving alone reads as sharp. Ameeri is our most overlapped composition; Nawaab is deliberately less so, because its tobacco and leather are meant to be heard.
Tip: Smell an unfamiliar fragrance at ten minutes and again at an hour. Relatives mean good transitions.
One bottle of Ameeri from ₹385 is the whole purchase here.
The carrier is most of the bottle and the part almost nobody prints
A fragrance is a concentrate dissolved in something, and that something is the majority of what you buy. A spray uses alcohol, which is why its first thirty seconds are the loudest part of the wear - the alcohol leaves fast and drags the lightest top notes with it. Our attars use a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, alcohol-free and with no DPG carriers, DPG being a common synthetic diluent that is inexpensive and smells of almost nothing. That removes the loud opening phase entirely, which is a fact about the format rather than a claim about quality. It is the question with the widest gap between how much it matters and how rarely a listing answers it.
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
Refinement is four decisions rather than one quality: the material, how many materials, how the phases hand over, and what the whole thing is dissolved in.
All four can be asked about before you spend anything, which is more than can be said for the word refined itself.
Material, stated specifically: No synthetic oudh in Nawaab, no synthetic rose in Ameeri, and real jasmine sambac and real rose absolute in Mastani. ₹399, ₹385 and ₹389 for the 3ml.
The same four questions, answered against one specific bottle rather than in the abstract.
The SOSA shortlist
The four things, and how Nawaab answers each of them
The thing to check
What to do
The material
White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, with no synthetic oudh in the composition. That is a statement about what was bought and blended, specific enough to be wrong.
The number of materials
Six published notes, which is the most in the SOSA range, and the reason Nawaab reads as deep rather than as one thing at full volume.
The transitions
Deliberately audible here. The aged tobacco and leather are meant to arrive as themselves, which is why Ameeri rather than Nawaab is the answer to anybody asking for smooth.
The carrier
A skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, alcohol-free, no DPG carriers - so no alcoholic opening, and the same carrier across all four attars.
What it costs
₹399 for 3ml, ₹699 for 6ml, ₹1,199 for 12ml. The most expensive attar in the line to fill, and twenty rupees above the least expensive at 3ml.
Who should refuse it
Anybody who will not wear oud, smoke, aged tobacco or leather. It is the heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin, and for that reader the answer is Adaa at ₹379.
If what you want is where refinement lands rather than what it is made of, which perfume oil smells smooth and refined rather than loud and sharp takes the transitions half of this page and gives it a bottle, with Ameeri's rose and soft oudh disclosed. And if you would rather have the four questions to ask a listing before you spend anything at all, they are in what to look for when choosing an attar, which runs the same checklist on SOSA's own shelves. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and every attar named here is its own composition.
Material cost, made visible: Nawaab is the most expensive attar in the line to fill and its 3ml is ₹399 - twenty rupees above Adaa, which is nothing like the difference inside the bottle.
SOSA makes exactly four attars, all on the same alcohol-free base, and between them they demonstrate the four things on this page rather neatly: the costliest material, the smoothest transitions and the thinnest structure are three different bottles. Below are all three, with what rules each of them out. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA attar specification
Three attars, three of the four decisions made differently
A reader who wants to smell raw-material cost for themselves
White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, no synthetic oudh. Six materials, the most in the range, and the most expensive of the four to fill. ₹399 for the 3ml. Out if oud is out
A reader who wants to hear good transitions rather than big materials
Taif rose, real Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh, no synthetic rose. The saffron bridges the flower and the wood, which is the smoothest handover in the range. ₹385 for the 3ml. Carries rose and a soft oudh
A reader who wants the thinnest, driest structure we make
Bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - fewer materials on purpose, and the only one of the four with no oud. Wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, and the jasmine sambac is disclosed
Everything on this page is a fact about how a composition is built, and none of it is a promise. SOSA makes exactly four attars, Nawaab carries oud, aged tobacco and leather and is ruled out for anybody who will not wear those, and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is three full-size bottles rather than a sampler and excludes Adaa. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing is published for the perfume line or the solid body perfumes, so no figure is given for them, and no note list is published for the solids at all, which is why this page never says how one of them smells. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one - nothing about compliments, nothing about being noticed, and nothing about expensive material producing a particular effect on anyone - and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind, because what a material does on your skin is a question for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only other thing I will promise you. Ask for an attar recommendation before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
People are slightly apologetic when they ask me this, as though wanting to know what refinement is made of were a professional secret they are intruding on. It is not a secret and there is no mystique in it. It is four decisions, made at a bench, and each one costs either money or time. I would rather you knew them, because you will then be able to hear them in other people's work as well as in mine.
The material comes first: a real raw material brings a crowd of small facets with it, and that crowd is what makes a note sound round instead of flat. Then the number of materials, because a composition with very few has nothing to hold a note up from underneath. Then the transitions - everything evaporates at a different speed, so the only question is whether you hear the handovers, and overlap is what smooth actually means. And then the carrier, which is most of the bottle and the thing nobody asks about. Ours is a jojoba and sandalwood base with no alcohol and no DPG, so the loudest thirty seconds most fragrances have simply are not there.
Nawaab at ₹399 for 3ml is my worked example because it is the most expensive of our four to fill, with no synthetic oudh in it - and I will say the awkward part myself: it is also the bottle most people reading this cluster should refuse, because it carries oud, aged tobacco and leather and it is the heaviest thing I make for skin. If that is you, buy Adaa at ₹379 instead, which carries jasmine sambac. Not the Pack of 3, which is not a sampler. Wears 6-8 hours is our only published figure, I make no outcome claim and no health claim, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
What makes one perfume smell more refined than another?
Four things, and all four can be checked. The quality of the material, since a real raw material usually carries more small facets than a synthetic standing in for it. The number of materials, because a composition with very few has nothing to support each note. The transitions, which is whether the phases overlap or queue - that is what smooth and sharp describe. And the carrier, which is most of the bottle. SOSA attars use an alcohol-free jojoba and sandalwood base with no DPG.
Which SOSA attar is the best example of raw-material cost?
Nawaab, at Rs 399 for 3ml, Rs 699 for 6ml and Rs 1,199 for 12ml. It is the most expensive attar in the line to fill, with white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, and no synthetic oudh in it. Six materials, the most in the range. It is also the heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin, so anyone who will not wear oud, tobacco or leather should take Adaa at Rs 379 instead.
Are synthetic materials a sign of a badly made perfume?
No, and it would be dishonest to say so. A great deal of modern perfumery depends on synthetics, and some materials cannot be harvested at scale any other way. What a real material tends to bring is more small facets, which is why it can read as rounder rather than as a single tone. Where SOSA can be specific it publishes the claim: no synthetic oudh in Nawaab, no synthetic rose in Ameeri, real jasmine sambac and real rose absolute in Mastani.
Why does the carrier matter if it does not smell of much?
Because it is most of what is in the bottle and it decides how the composition starts. A spray dissolves its concentrate in alcohol, and the alcohol evaporates fast, taking the lightest top notes with it - which is why the first thirty seconds of a spray are its loudest part. An attar has no alcohol, so that phase does not exist. SOSA attars sit on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base with no DPG carriers. That is a format fact, not a quality claim.
If I pay more for material, will I like the fragrance more?
Not necessarily, and I would rather be straight about it. Raw-material cost tells you what a composition is made of and nothing about whether the smell suits you. Nawaab is the most expensive of SOSA's four attars to fill and it is also the one most readers rule out, because oud and leather are not for everybody. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance because there is no honest way to measure one. Buy the 3ml, wear it a full day, decide for yourself.
And the carrier, which is most of it: A skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, alcohol-free, with no DPG carriers - so there is no alcohol to flash off and no loud first phase.
SOSA — Attars and Perfume Oilsfor a reader who wants to know what they are hearing

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. The products named are SOSA's own; the method - shop the note you have ruled out, not the note you hope for - applies to any brand.
Facts verified 17 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, each sold in three sizes, 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Ameeri is ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165, with published notes of Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. SOSA Mastani is ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179, with published notes of night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
