A car is the smallest space any of us scents, and the one we sit closest to. Two or three cubic metres of air, a metre from your face, with the windows up and the heater on for four months of the year. I say this to customers constantly and it still surprises people: almost every car fragrance problem I am sent is a dose problem, not a scent problem. The bottle is not weak and the oil is not wrong. The registers that tend to do this are the dry, low-sweetness ones - woods and roots rather than fruit or sugar. The other half of the answer is level rather than choice: almost anything smells cheap when there is too much of it in a small sealed cabin, and almost anything decent smells considered when there is slightly too little. If you want the car to read expensive, start by running whatever you choose lower than feels natural.
Should I change car fragrance between winter and summer?
You do not have to, but you almost certainly have to change the dose. In winter the windows are up and the heater is running, so the cabin barely exchanges air and warm air releases fragrance faster from the source - the same hanging bottle at the same setting reads considerably stronger than it did in October. Tighten the stopper, or use one spray where you used two. Some people do also move register with the season, going deeper in winter and cleaner in summer, and there is nothing wrong with that as a preference. But it is a preference, not a requirement, and the more common winter problem by far is not the wrong scent - it is the right scent at an autumn dose in a January cabin.
How far ahead should I put fragrance in the car before picking someone up?
Fifteen to thirty minutes, not thirty seconds. A spray peaks immediately and then settles, so spraying as your passenger opens the door means they meet the peak instead of the settled level, which is the single most common mistake in car fragrance. Do it well before they arrive, crack the windows for a minute afterwards and then close the car up, so what greets them is an even, mild cabin. One spray in a saloon is the honest starting number, checked by getting out and coming back in with a fresh nose rather than by how it feels to you at the time. If you run a hanging bottle continuously, you usually need to do nothing at all - the baseline is already there.
Is a hanging car perfume less premium than a spray?
No, and SOSA prices them identically on purpose so the question does not arise. Both formats hold the same oil with the same alcohol-free, phthalate-free, IFRA-compliant composition. The hanging 12ml is refillable glass with an adjustable stopper, gives a mild continuous throw and lasts four to six weeks. Does a fragrance help on a long drive when I am tired?
We will not make that claim and you should be sceptical of anyone who does. SOSA does not sell any car fragrance as an alertness product, an anti-fatigue product or a driving-safety product, and nothing in the range prevents, relieves or treats headaches or migraine. Icy Mint's description mentions hot, drowsy drives because a cool scent produces a cool sensation - that is a comment on how it feels, not a claim about how alert it makes you. The things that address tiredness on a long drive are rest, breaks and not driving when you should not be. What a fragrance legitimately does is make a cabin you spend hours in more pleasant to sit in, which is worth doing on its own terms.
