If clean is your only brief, you have four routes and they smell genuinely different from each other. Here is what each one is, what it does well, and which of them survives an Indian summer - so you can explore deliberately rather than sniffing at random.
Quick answers — read this first
What are the four routes to clean? Citrus-aromatic, white musk, aquatic-ozonic, and green. Each produces a clean impression by a different mechanism.
Which works best in India? Citrus-aromatic over a clean musk. Aquatics can go metallic on very hot skin and pure greens can feel thin.
Which one do you make? The first. Adaa is a citrus-green-musk; I make no aquatic and no standalone white musk.
The short answer
Clean is an effect, not a family. It comes from three things together: a bright citrus-green top, no sugar anywhere, and a clean white musk base that reads as skin.
The non-negotiable. No sugar. Sweetness is the single thing that stops a fragrance reading as clean, and it is in most "fresh" bottles. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free.
SOSA in one line. Alcohol-free, DPG-free, IFRA-compliant attars on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, 6-8 hours on skin, 3ml / 6ml / 12ml, ₹379-₹1,199, hand-blended in Pune.
Start here. For clean, Adaa 3ml at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the only genuinely clean composition I make.
Illustrative only. Clean is an effect rather than a fragrance family: a bright citrus-green opening gives the first impression, and a clean white musk base is what still reads as clean at hour four.
So which fragrance families should you explore if clean is your only requirement?
Four, and they are genuinely different.Citrus-aromatic: bergamot, neroli, cardamom over a clean base - bright and the most versatile in heat. White musk: the skin-and-cotton route, softest and closest. Aquatic-ozonic: the marine and "fresh air" register, the most divisive and the least reliable on very hot skin. Green: stems, leaves and crushed herbs - crisp, and thin without a base. For Indian conditions the first two are the strongest, and Adaa is the first sitting on the second.
Short version: four routes, not one. Explore them deliberately and you will find out which kind of clean you actually mean.
Want the short path?Adaa is route one sitting on route two - citrus-aromatic over clean white musk.
"Clean" covers at least four different smells, which is why two people using the same word can want opposite bottles. Knowing which route you mean saves months of sampling.
What "clean" actually means
Clean is not a fragrance family - it is an effect, produced by a specific combination: bright citrus and green materials on top, no sugar anywhere, and a clean white musk base that reads as skin rather than as perfume. Remove any one of those three and the effect collapses.
1
Criterion one
Route one: citrus-aromatic
Bergamot, neroli, green cardamom, sometimes herbs or tea. Bright, dry and immediately legible as fresh. Strengths: the most versatile route in Indian heat, and the easiest to wear to an office. Weakness: it needs a real anchor or it is gone in forty minutes.
2
Criterion two
Route two: white musk
The skin-and-clean-cotton route. Softest and closest of the four, and the most likely to be described as "you but cleaner". Strengths: never offensive, wonderful at close range, extremely long-lasting. Weakness: can be almost imperceptible if underdosed, and the powdery musks tip into soapiness.
Marine, mineral, "fresh air after rain". The most popular route in mainstream men's fragrance and the most divisive. Strengths: unmistakably fresh, immediately. Weaknesses: it can read metallic on very hot skin, and it is the register most responsible for fresh fragrances smelling interchangeable. I do not make one.
4
Criterion four
Route four: green
Stems, crushed leaves, galbanum, violet leaf. Crisp, slightly sharp, never sweet. Strengths: the most natural-smelling kind of clean. Weakness: thin without something underneath, and it can read austere rather than warm.
5
Criterion five
Clean is an effect, not a fragrance family
This is the idea everything else follows from. There is no "clean" shelf in perfumery - the impression is produced by a combination: bright citrus and green materials on top, a clean white musk at the base, and an absence of sugar in between. Get all three and almost any composition reads as clean; miss one and it does not, however fresh the opening was.
The buying checklist
The criteria - and how to check each one yourself
What to look for
Why it matters for a clean scent
How to check
Clean white musk base
This is what still reads as clean at hour four
What is the base note?
No sugar anywhere
Sweetness is what breaks the clean effect
Check for vanilla, tonka, amber
Bright citrus-green top
Gives the first fresh impression
Bergamot, neroli, cardamom?
A real anchor under the citrus
Citrus alone is gone in 40 minutes
What holds the brightness?
Close projection
Clean is a close-range effect
Does it sit near the skin?
Oil base, no alcohol
No sting, no sharp evaporation
Ask: alcohol-free? DPG-free?
Small dose
Over-applying destroys the clean effect
One dab, not two
Stated longevity
Clean should not mean short

Where SOSA sits - and where another attar might suit you better
I make one of these four routes and I will name the other three rather than pretend my range covers them. If aquatic is your kind of clean, nothing I sell will satisfy you.
The honest position
Four routes. Knowing which one you mean saves months.
Where I think we earn a place on your shortlist: the citrus-aromatic route done with real materials over a genuine clean musk base, which is the combination that holds best in Indian conditions. Where another house might suit you better: for aquatic or standalone white musk, go to a house that specialises - I make neither and would not pretend otherwise.
"Clean means weak." It does not. Clean is about the materials - no sugar, clean musk, bright top - not about strength. A clean fragrance can last eight hours and still read as skin.
✕
"All fresh fragrances smell the same." Most of the cheap ones do, because they lean on the same handful of inexpensive fresh materials. The difference is what sits underneath - real cardamom and neroli, or nothing.
✕
"Clean is boring." Only when it is thin. A clean composition with real material is quietly interesting all day - reviews here are illustrative, not a guarantee.
Sample one bottle from each route before committing to any of them. If route one is yours, Adaa is my version of it.
The SOSA attar range
All four are alcohol-free and DPG-free in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. Adaa is the citrus-aromatic-musk; the others are not clean compositions at all.
"I just want to smell clean" is the single most common thing anyone says to me, and it is a harder brief than it sounds - because clean is not a fragrance family. It is an effect, and it takes three things at once: a bright citrus-green opening, a clean white musk base that reads as skin rather than as perfume, and no sugar anywhere.
That third condition is why so many bottles sold as fresh do not stay clean. Sweetness is inexpensive and it tests well at a counter, so it finds its way into almost everything - and by hour three you are wearing something that announces itself as perfume rather than as a person who is well-groomed.
Adaa is the only genuinely clean thing I make, and I would rather say that plainly than stretch the word across my whole range. I do not make an aquatic and I do not make a standalone white musk. If those are what you want, buy them from someone who does - and if a clean citrus-green-musk is what you are after, mine is worth your ₹379.
Frequently asked questions
Do you make an aquatic or a pure white musk attar?
No to both, and I would rather say so. My range has no marine or ozonic composition and no standalone white musk. What I make is a citrus-green-musk, which is a third route to the same impression - and if you specifically want an aquatic, buy one from a house that makes them.
Which SOSA attar smells cleanest?
Adaa - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the only genuinely clean composition in the range; Ameeri is warm, Mastani is rich and Nawaab is deep, and I would not sell any of them as fresh. From ₹379.
Why do so many fresh perfumes smell the same?
Because the inexpensive route to freshness uses a small set of the same synthetic materials, with very little underneath them. The difference between one clean fragrance and another shows up at hour two, not at the counter - so test on skin and wait.
Does "clean" mean the fragrance is weak?
No. Clean is a property of the materials - no sugar, a clean musk base, a bright top - not of the strength. SOSA attars wear 6-8 hours on skin, and the clean effect lasts as long as the scent does because the musk base is what creates it.
How much should I apply for a clean effect?
One dab at the base of the throat, on dry skin. Clean is a close-range impression by definition - anything that fills a room is reading as perfume rather than as grooming, and over-applying is the most common way people lose the effect.
