This is the reference page for the whole cluster. The direction for each interior style, where to put the machine, how to set the level so it reads as the smell of the house rather than of a diffuser, how to schedule it around Indian cooking and Indian heat, and what it costs to run across a year.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I set up home fragrance properly with a SOSA Vaayu? Five decisions. Choose the direction from your materials and light; place the machine where air enters the living space, on the return-air path if the home is air conditioned; set the intensity to the lowest level perceptible from the doorway; schedule two windows a day around your cooking and the hottest hours; and refill roughly five times a year, since a 400ml tank lasts up to about 75 days. The Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, and runs under 38dB.

Where is the best place to put a home diffuser? Where the air already moves, and at height. In an air-conditioned home that is the return-air path; in a naturally ventilated one it is where air enters the living space, never beside the window or jaali it leaves through. Avoid direct sun, hot light fittings, deep sofa groups and closed corners. A metre and a half or higher spreads more evenly than floor level. The SOSA Vaayu can be freestanding, wall mounted or HVAC mounted.

Does home fragrance need to change with the season in India? The setting does, more than the fragrance. In summer, heat amplifies the composition and especially any sweetness, so drop an intensity step and run in the cooler morning and evening windows. In monsoon, air the house more and deal with damp at the source before scenting, because fragrance over dampness gives you both. In winter, with windows closed and the air cooler, you can usually raise the setting by a step and it will read the same.
The short answer
Short answer: make five decisions once: the direction from your materials and light, the placement where air enters the room, the intensity at the lowest level perceptible from the doorway, a schedule of two windows a day around cooking and heat, and a refill rhythm of roughly five 400ml fills a year. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, waterless, under 38dB, with app timers and adjustable intensity.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for the whole connected floor, with the fragrance direction matched to your interior and the schedule set once.
Next step: send us your floor plan, your materials and your cooking routine and we will write the whole specification with you - ask us what fits your home.
The complete home fragrance specification, in five lines1. Direction - chosen from your materials and your light2. Placement - where the air enters, not where there is space3. Intensity - the lowest level perceptible from the doorway4. Schedule - two windows a day, set around cooking and heat5. Refill - 400ml lasts up to 75 days, roughly five a year
Five decisions, made once. After that the house simply smells the same every day, which is the entire difference between a scented home and a considered one.

Straight answer
What is the complete specification for scenting a home with a SOSA Vaayu?
Five decisions, made once, then left alone. One, the direction. Take it from your materials and your light rather than from a mood board. Hard non-porous rooms of stone, glass and lacquer hold fragrance in the air, so they take cool mineral woods at a low setting. Porous rooms of oak, linen, jute, wool and plaster absorb it, so they take dry warmth with real base. Pale, edited rooms take one clean idea. Classic rooms of silk, panelling and books take resins, orris and dry tobacco. Modern Indian homes take khus, sandalwood and mineral earth, and their cooking handled first. Two, placement. Put the machine where air enters the living space: the return-air path in an air-conditioned home, the incoming side in a naturally ventilated one, never beside the window or jaali the air leaves through. Height helps, a metre and a half or above. Avoid direct sun, hot light fittings and the inside of a deep sofa group. Three, intensity. Set it to the lowest level you can still perceive walking in from outside, and judge it from the doorway rather than the sofa, because your nose adapts within minutes. Hard rooms usually need a step less than you expect, air-conditioned rooms a step more, because conditioned air flattens the top notes. Four, schedule. Two windows a day beats continuous running in most Indian homes: early morning, and evening once cooking is finished and the kitchen has been aired. The Vaayu offers 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers with app control. Five, refill. The 400ml tank runs up to about 75 days at typical settings, so most homes refill around five times a year; at 5W the running cost is roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule. The machine itself: SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg, under 38dB, DC 12V/1A, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, with auto-stop and key-lock, CE, RoHS and SGS certified and made in India. The Vaayu is ordered with its own set of hotel-inspired fragrance options and runs on pure fragrance oil in its own 400ml tank. It is not an ultrasonic mist diffuser and never takes a water-based fragrance. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group.
Direction from your materials, placement on the air path, intensity judged from the doorway, two scheduled windows a day, and roughly five 400ml fills a year.
The whole specification runs on one machine. The SOSA Vaayu covers 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), holds 400ml of pure oil for up to 75 days, runs under 38dB at 5W, and offers 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, auto-stop and key-lock.

Placement, intensity and season - the three settings that finish the job

The direction is the part everybody discusses. These three settings are the part that decides whether it actually works, and all three are free to change.

1
Placement
Where the air enters, at height, away from the sun
Fragrance is distributed by air movement, not by proximity, which is why the middle of the living room is usually the wrong answer. In an air-conditioned home, the return-air path is the best position because the system then carries the fragrance to every room it serves. In a naturally ventilated home, place it on the side where air comes in and well away from the window, balcony or jaali it leaves through, or you are simply scenting outside. Height of a metre and a half or more spreads more evenly than a low console. Avoid direct afternoon sun and hot light fittings, which throw the fragrance unevenly, and avoid the inside of a deep sofa group, where the nearest textiles absorb the first pass and the far side of the room gets very little.
Tip: if one room is always weaker, move the machine before you touch the dial.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu is freestanding, wall mountable or HVAC mountable at 0.9kg, so it can go where the air is rather than where there is a spare surface.
See SOSA Vaayu →
2
Intensity
Judged from the doorway, never from inside the room
Your nose adapts to a constant smell within a few minutes, which is why people who set the level from the sofa almost always set it too high and everyone arriving notices. Go outside for ten minutes, come back in, and set it at the lowest level you can still detect on entry. Hard reflective rooms need a step lower than instinct suggests because nothing absorbs; air-conditioned rooms need a step more because conditioned air removes the volatile top; textile-heavy rooms sit in the middle, because the fabric averages everything out. The test that matters: a guest should compliment the room, not the fragrance. If they name the scent in the first ten seconds, drop a step.
SOSA Vaayu
Adjustable intensity plus 1h/4h/8h/24h timers means the level and the hours are both a setting rather than a compromise.
See SOSA Vaayu →
3
Season and schedule
Indian summer, monsoon and winter each need a different setting
The fragrance does not need to change through the year, but the setting does. In summer, heat amplifies the composition and especially any sweetness in it, so drop one intensity step and schedule the runs for early morning and evening rather than through the hottest hours. In monsoon, the priority is airing and damp: run the machine less, air the house more, and deal with any musty corner at the source, because fragrance over dampness gives you both smells and solves neither. In winter, with windows closed and cooler air, you can usually raise the setting by a step and it will read the same as summer did at the lower one. And year round in an Indian home, schedule around cooking rather than through it.
Tip: summer down a step, winter up a step, monsoon air first and scent second.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu app makes a seasonal change a thirty second job rather than a reason to buy anything new.

The SOSA principle
The fragrance is one of five decisions, and it is not the one that usually goes wrong. Placement and intensity are.
A well chosen scent in the wrong corner at the wrong level is what most people mean when they say home fragrance does not work for them.

The rest of the cluster: modern luxury interiors, minimalist interiors, Japandi interiors, warm neutral interiors, contemporary luxury homes and modern Indian luxury homes. The last word, and it is the same one on every page in this cluster. Fragrance is the finish, not the foundation. It works alongside ventilation and cleaning and never instead of them, it cannot cover damp, active cooking, a musty wardrobe, pet odour, a dry drain trap or new paint, adhesive and joinery off-gassing, and it is not an air purifier and makes no health claim. Air the house daily, clean it, deal with the source, and then let one scent run quietly underneath everything. A note from Sonal

When people ask me what I actually do for a living, the honest answer is that I spend most of my time on the four decisions around the fragrance rather than the fragrance itself. Which wall. How high. How low to set it. What time of day. I have watched a beautiful composition fail in a house purely because it was sitting in a still corner at twice the level it needed, and I have watched a simple one feel like the best decision somebody made all year because it was placed on the air and set correctly.

So use this page as a checklist rather than an article. Direction from your materials. Placement where the air enters. Intensity judged from the doorway after being outside. Two windows a day, set around your kitchen and your hottest hours. Then a refill roughly five times a year, because a 400ml tank runs up to about seventy five days. One Vaayu covers 1000m³, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, which is a whole home or a villa floor.

And the honest part, which I would rather you read twice than skip. Fragrance works alongside ventilation and cleaning and never instead of them. It cannot cover damp, cooking, a musty cupboard, pet odour or a fresh fit-out, and layering it over any of those gives you two smells rather than one. It is not an air purifier and I make no health claim for it. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the complete setup for home fragrance with a SOSA Vaayu?
Five decisions. Choose the direction from your materials and light, place the machine where air enters the living space or on the return-air path if the home is air conditioned, set the intensity to the lowest level perceptible from the doorway, schedule two windows a day around cooking and the hottest hours, and refill roughly five times a year since a 400ml tank lasts up to about 75 days.
Where should I place the SOSA Vaayu in my home?
On the air path and at height. In an air-conditioned home that means the return-air path, so the system distributes the fragrance for you. In a naturally ventilated home it means the side where air enters, well away from the window, balcony or jaali it leaves through. A metre and a half or higher spreads more evenly than a low console, and direct sun, hot light fittings and deep sofa groups are all worth avoiding.
How do I know if the fragrance level is right?
Step outside for ten minutes and walk back in. You should notice it on entry and stop noticing it a few minutes later. Judging from inside the room does not work, because the nose adapts to a constant smell within minutes. Hard reflective rooms usually want a step lower, air-conditioned rooms a step higher, and if a guest comments on the fragrance rather than on the room, it is too strong.
Should I change the settings between summer, monsoon and winter?
Yes, though the fragrance itself can stay the same. In Indian summer, heat amplifies everything and especially sweetness, so drop an intensity step and run in the cooler morning and evening. In monsoon, prioritise airing and fix any damp at the source before scenting. In winter, with windows closed and the air cooler, a step up will usually read the same as summer did at the lower setting.
How much does it cost to run, and how often do I refill?
A 400ml tank lasts up to about 75 days depending on intensity and hours, so most homes refill around five times a year. The machine draws 5W, which works out at roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten hour daily schedule. The Vaayu itself is Rs 11,999 and covers 1000 cubic metres, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft.
