This question is usually asked as a branding question and it is not one. Before you decide whether the two sections deserve different characters, find out whether your building can physically give them different characters. Most buildings cannot.
Quick answers — read this first
Should men's and women's footwear sections use the same signature fragrance? Yes, if they share air - which in most stores they do. This is a question about physics rather than taste. Two scent sources in one connected volume do not produce two zones; they produce a gradient, with each register weakening across the floor and a third smell at the boundary that nobody chose. The men's side gets a diluted version of its register plus some of the women's, and the women's side gets the reverse. A genuinely separate scent needs a genuinely separate volume of air.

What counts as a separate volume of air? A different floor, a room with its own door that stays shut, or a wing on its own air handling. What does not count: a partition that stops short of the ceiling, an archway, a change of flooring, a mezzanine open to the floor below, or two ends of one long room. If air moves freely between two areas within a minute or two, they are one volume for scenting purposes no matter how distinct they look. Merchandising boundaries and air boundaries are two different maps, and only one of them matters here.

Which register carries both a men's and a women's section? Usually dry woods - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. They sit under leather, which is the dominant material on most men's floors, they add no sweetness, and they read as neither masculine nor feminine so much as simply dry and considered. A true floral is the right shared register only where the whole store is occasion-led and the men's section is small. Whichever you choose, choose it for the room as a whole and set it low enough that the shoes are noticed first.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes, if the two sections share air, and most do. Two registers in one connected volume make a gradient and a third smell at the boundary rather than two clean zones. A second scent belongs to a second volume - a separate floor, a room with its own door, or a wing on its own air handling. In one room, choose one register, usually dry woods.
The pick: For a shared floor, SOSA Mountain Breeze (₹849) is the register that carries both sections. From about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) holds that single level across the whole room.
Next step: Send us a floor plan marked with doors, partitions and where the air conditioning returns are - ask for a store scenting plan.
One volume of air takes one registerTwo sources in one room make a gradient, not two zonesThe boundary gets a third smell nobody choseA separate scent needs a separate volume of airPartitions and archways do not divide airDry woods carry both sections without sweetening either
Decide the physics before the branding. Whether your two sections can hold two registers is answered by doors and air handling, not by how the floor is merchandised.
Straight answer
Whether men's and women's sections can hold different signature scents in one store
If they share air, no - and that is a statement about the building rather than about taste. Here is what actually happens when a store puts one register in the men's section and another in the women's. Each source emits into the room's air, the room's air mixes, and within minutes you have three areas rather than two: a men's zone carrying its own register plus a measurable amount of the other, a women's zone doing the reverse, and a boundary between them holding a blend neither of you chose. Nobody stands still for that experience either; customers walk through it. The intended effect - two distinct characters, each right for its own stock - is the one outcome the room cannot deliver. Air conditioning makes it worse rather than better, because a split unit or a ceiling cassette is designed to move and mix air across the whole space; the more effective your cooling, the faster the two registers become one. So the first question is not which two scents but how many volumes of air do I actually have. A genuine second volume is a different floor, a room with its own door that stays shut, or a wing on its own air handling. A partition that stops short of the ceiling is not one. An archway is not one. A change of flooring, a step, a mezzanine open below, or two ends of one long room are not one. The practical test takes a day: put one scent source in the intended second area at your normal level, stand at the far end of the first area two hours later, and see whether you can smell it. If you can, you have one volume. Given one volume, the question becomes which single register carries both sections, and the usual answer is dry woods - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. They sit under leather, which is the dominant material on most men's floors, they add no sweetness for anything to argue with, and they read as dry and considered rather than as gendered. The exception is a store that is overwhelmingly occasion-led with a small men's section, where a dry rose and night-blooming jasmine can carry the whole room. What I would not do is split the difference by blending: a mixed register is a compromise nobody asked for and it usually reads as neither. On hardware, the same logic applies. From roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected floor one Vaayu holds a single level across the room, with adjustable intensity, trading-hour timers and a key-lock. Below that a reed or two is honest and a machine is over-specified. And a second unit belongs to a second volume of air, never a second corner of the same room - two units in one space make competing gradients rather than combined coverage. Ambient fragrance here is a brand and interior decision, and we make no claim that it affects sales, conversion, footfall, browsing time or what anybody buys. Ask for a store scenting plan with a floor plan.
Count volumes of air before you count sections. One connected volume takes one register, and dry woods are usually the one that carries both sides of the floor.
For a connected retail floor of roughly 1,500 sq ft and up, one SOSA Vaayu holds a single register across the whole room - rated to 1000m³, under 38dB, waterless, with adjustable intensity, trading-hour timers and a key-lock so the level cannot drift. ₹11,999.

What to actually buy, by size

Sizing follows the same logic as the register: it belongs to the volume, not the section. Under 300 sq ft, one reed for the whole room. Between 300 and 750, reeds by zone in one register or a Sukoon near the entrance. Between 750 and 1,500 the decision turns on whether the floor is genuinely one connected volume. From roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, one Vaayu - and one only, because a second unit in the same room competes with the first.

Three things that decide it

Three things to settle before you decide whether two registers are even possible.

1
First, count volumes, not sections
Air does not respect a merchandising plan
Draw your floor plan and mark only three things: doors that actually close, full-height partitions, and where the air conditioning supplies and returns sit. What you have left is your map of air. A genuine second volume is a different floor, a room with a door that stays shut, or a wing on its own air handling. What does not divide air: a partition stopping short of the ceiling, an archway, a change of flooring or ceiling height, a step, a mezzanine open to the floor below, or simply distance. Air conditioning actively works against you here, because a cassette or split unit is designed to move air across a whole space and mix it - the better your cooling, the faster two registers become one. There is a simple test that costs a day. Put a single source in the intended second area at your normal level, then stand at the far end of the first area two hours later. If you can smell it, you have one volume and one register.
Tip: mark the plan with doors and air-conditioning returns before you mark it with sections. The first map is the one that governs.

2
Second, choose the register for the room
Dry woods carry both sides; blending two registers carries neither
Once you accept one register, the choice is easier than it looks. Himalayan pine, sage and cedar is the usual answer, for three reasons. It sits under leather, which is the dominant material on most men's floors and a good part of the women's. It adds no sweetness, so nothing on the women's side has to argue with it. And it reads as dry and considered rather than as gendered - the idea that a woody register is masculine comes from perfumery marketing rather than from how a room actually behaves. The exception is a store that is overwhelmingly occasion-led with a small men's section, where a dry rose and night-blooming jasmine can carry the whole floor honestly. What I would avoid is blending the two into a compromise register; a room built as an average of two intentions usually reads as neither. All of this is a judgement about what a room should signal, and not a claim about what any register does to a person.
Tip: if the shared register only works when you explain it, it is not carrying the room.

3
Third, if you genuinely have two volumes
Then, and only then, two registers are a real option
Some stores do have two volumes: a women's floor upstairs and a men's floor at street level, a bridal room with its own door, or a wing on separate air handling. If that is your building, two registers become possible - though not automatic, because customers still move between them and a hard change at a staircase can read as two shops rather than one brand. Where I do use two, I keep them related rather than contrasting: dry woods below and a dry floral above, for instance, both held at the same low level, so the transition reads as a change of room rather than a change of business. Hardware follows the same rule that governs everything on this page: one unit per volume. Two Vaayu units in one room produce competing gradients rather than combined coverage; two units in two genuine volumes produce two rooms. And below roughly 1,500 sq ft per volume, reeds are the honest answer for each.

Garden Bloom is the register for a genuinely separate women's or bridal volume, from ₹799.

The SOSA principle
Two registers in one room is not a bold branding decision. It is a physics problem that resolves into a third smell at the boundary.
Count the volumes of air first. The number you get is the number of registers you can have.

One unit, one volume: The SOSA Vaayu holds one level across a connected floor - waterless, under 38dB, key-locked. ₹11,999.

Zone by zone

The decision as a short sequence, in the order it has to be taken.

The SOSA plan
Two sections, one building - what to do
The question The answer
SOSA VaayuDo the sections share air?
If air moves freely between them within a minute or two, yes - and one connected volume takes exactly one register.
What counts as a second volume?
A different floor, a room with a door that stays shut, or a wing on its own air handling. Not a partition, an archway or a change of flooring.
Which single register carries both?
Usually Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - dry woods sit under leather, add no sweetness and read as considered rather than gendered.
How many machines?
One per connected volume. A second unit in the same room makes competing gradients rather than combined coverage.

The brand-level version of this question is answered in choosing one signature across men's, women's and occasion, and the zoning question is taken further in one machine or multiple zones in a 1,500 sq ft store. SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with any hotel or footwear brand named for reference.

A note from Sonal

This arrives as a branding question almost every time, and I have to turn it into a building question before I can answer it. Owners describe two sections with two characters, and then they send me a plan and the two sections are one room with a display unit between them. At that point there is nothing to decide: the air has already made the decision, and it made it in favour of one register.

When the floor really is one volume, I usually specify dry woods - a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849, or a Vaayu at ₹11,999 once there is genuinely 1,500 sq ft of connected floor to carry. Woods sit under leather, add no sweetness for the women's side to argue with, and are far less gendered in a room than perfumery marketing suggests. Only a real second volume gets a second register.

The limits. This is an ambience and interior decision, and we make no claim that it affects sales, footfall or browsing time or that it influences what anyone buys. We make no medical, wellbeing or therapeutic claim. It never masks a smell that has a source; the stockroom, the boxes and the trying seats come first in both sections. Staff breathe it longest and their judgement outranks mine. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should men's and women's footwear sections use the same signature fragrance?
Yes, if they share air, and in most stores they do. Two sources in one connected volume produce a gradient and a third smell at the boundary rather than two clean zones, so neither section gets the register it was given. A separate scent belongs to a separate volume of air - a different floor, a room with its own door, or a wing on its own air handling.
What counts as a separate volume of air?
A different floor, a room with a door that stays shut, or a wing on its own air handling. What does not count: a partition that stops short of the ceiling, an archway, a change of flooring or ceiling height, a mezzanine open to the floor below, or two ends of one long room. If air moves freely between the areas within a minute or two, they are one volume for scenting purposes.
How do I test whether my two sections share air?
Put a single scent source in the intended second area at your normal level, then stand at the far end of the first area about two hours later. If you can smell it there, you have one volume and one register. It costs a day and it settles the question better than any floor plan, because air conditioning moves and mixes air far more than most owners expect.
Which register works across both sections?
Usually Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry woods sit under leather, which dominates most men's floors, they add no sweetness for a women's section to argue with, and in a room they read as dry and considered rather than gendered. A dry rose and jasmine can carry the whole floor where the store is overwhelmingly occasion-led with a small men's section.
Can I put two machines in one large store to create two zones?
No. Several units in one connected space make competing gradients rather than combined coverage, and the boundary between them carries a blend nobody chose. One unit belongs to one volume of air. From roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 holds a single level across the room; a second unit belongs to a genuinely separate volume.
