What buyers ask us about hotel and spa scents
Including the questions where the answer is "we do not make that" and "you cannot put that on your skin"
"I want to smell like a luxury hotel lobby. What do I buy?"
Usually a clean white musk with soft woods. In our range that is Adaa. What we will not do is tell you it reproduces any particular hotel, because it does not and we have no authorisation to try.
Hotel-inspired scent · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Can I wear my reed diffuser oil as a perfume?"
No. Reed oil is assessed for evaporation from a reed in a room, not for leave-on skin application. They are different use cases with different exposure, and we will not sell you one as the other.
Home against skin · answered by Sonal Sahani
"You make a lavender reed diffuser. Do you make a lavender attar?"
No. Evening Calm is Himalayan lavender and chamomile for a room. We do not make a lavender attar, and rather than steer you to something that is not lavender, we will tell you that plainly.
What we do not make · answered by Sonal Sahani
"I want white tea and clean hotel linen on my skin."
We do not make that as an attar. Adaa is the closest thing we have, and it is citrus and jasmine sambac over white musk rather than a linen accord. If linen is the point, we are not your brand for it.
Clean linen · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Which hotel is the Hotel Collection based on?"
It is our own interpretation of a style of hospitality scenting. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group, and it is an ultrasonic diffuser fragrance for rooms rather than a skin product.
Independence · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Will it last all day like my spray?"
We do not publish hour figures for any fragrance, because how long one seems to last depends on your skin, the weather and how quickly you stop noticing it. An oil-carried attar sits close rather than projecting.

These two routes are not variations on a theme. They are opposite temperatures, and choosing between them is choosing whether you want to feel warmed or cooled by what you are wearing. One of the two we make as a skin fragrance and the other we do not, so this page is partly about the decision and partly about where we cannot help.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the actual difference? Temperature. Sandalwood is warm, dense and creamy and sits close to the skin. Lavender-musk is cool, airy and herbal-clean and reads as more open. Opposite impressions from a similar level of quietness.

Which lasts better in an oil? Sandalwood, by a clear margin. It is a heavy, tenacious material that an oil carrier and skin warmth both suit. Lavender is more volatile and loses its top quickly in an oil in a hot climate.

Which does SOSA make? The sandalwood route, in Ameeri Rs 385 and Nawaab Rs 399. We do not make a lavender-musk skin oil. Our lavender is a reed diffuser for rooms, not assessed for skin.
The short answer
Short answer: Sandalwood is warm, dense and close to the skin. Lavender-musk is cool, airy and herbal-clean. Sandalwood also survives an oil carrier and a hot climate far better. SOSA makes the sandalwood route for skin and offers lavender only as a room fragrance.
The honest limit: no fragrance we sell reproduces any hotel, spa, resort or retail brand's proprietary scent, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any of them. Where we do not make a family, we say so rather than recommending something adjacent.
Home is not skin: reed diffuser oil and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance are assessed for room use and are not assessed or sold for application to skin. Attars and solid perfumes are the skin products.
Where a hotel-style scent actually lives - and what it is assessed forUltrasonic mist diffuser - water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, room useReed diffuser - its own alcohol-free reed oil, room useAttar or solid perfume - assessed for leave-on skinThe three do not interchangeA scent family can cross between them. A formulation cannot, because the exposure is different.
You can carry a scent family from a room to your skin. You cannot carry a formulation, because a product assessed for evaporating in a room has not been assessed for sitting on you. That distinction is the whole of this guide.
Straight answer
Warm or cool, and which can I buy?
One is warm and one is cool, and that is the whole decision. Sandalwood is warm. Creamy, dense, slightly milky, it sits close to the skin and gives the impression of being wrapped rather than refreshed. It also happens to be one of the most oil-friendly materials in perfumery: heavy, tenacious, and improved rather than punished by skin warmth. Lavender-musk is cool. Herbal, slightly camphorous at the top, clean underneath, and it reads as open and airy rather than close. It is also more fragile in this format, because lavender's character lives in its volatile top and an oil carrier on warm Indian skin takes that top away faster than you would like. Which we make: the sandalwood route. Ameeri ₹385 has Indian sandalwood with Taif rose, saffron and soft oudh. Nawaab ₹399 has Mysore sandalwood under a leading oud. Which we do not make: a lavender-musk skin oil. Our Evening Calm lavender and chamomile is a reed diffuser for rooms, in our own alcohol-free reed oil, and is not assessed for skin. +91 96192 18531.
Sandalwood warm and oil-friendly. Lavender-musk cool and fragile in oil. We make the first and not the second.
If the brief is clean, quiet and expensive-feeling, the honest starting point in our range is Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml. If it is polished woods, Nawaab at ₹399.
from ₹379

The real difference between the two routes

The format argument matters more here than the preference argument, which is unusual, and it is worth understanding before you decide you want the lavender route. Lavender's appeal is concentrated in its first ten minutes. The herbal, slightly camphorous, almost green lift that makes lavender recognisable comes from relatively volatile constituents, and once they have gone what remains is a soft, faintly sweet, somewhat hay-like base that most people would not identify as lavender at all. In an alcohol-based spray that opening is presented efficiently and generously, which is why lavender works well in that format. In an oil-based attar the carrier slows evaporation, which is normally the whole advantage of the format, but here it mutes exactly the part you wanted while preserving the part you did not particularly ask for. Add Indian ambient temperatures and the mismatch gets worse rather than better. Sandalwood has precisely the opposite profile: almost nothing about it is volatile, its character is in the heavy fraction, and an oil carrier holding it against warm skin is close to ideal conditions. So this is one of those cases where the honest recommendation follows from the physics rather than from taste, and where a house that makes only one of the two routes is not necessarily limiting you.

1
Opposite temperatures
Wrapped, or refreshed
Sandalwood is creamy, dense and slightly milky, sits close and gives the impression of being wrapped. Lavender-musk is herbal, cool, clean underneath and reads as open and airy. Both are quiet, so the choice is not about volume. It is about whether you want warmth against you or air around you.
Tip: Decide that one thing and the rest of the comparison becomes straightforward.
2
Why format favours sandalwood
Lavender's appeal is in its volatile top
The herbal, almost green lift that makes lavender recognisable comes from volatile constituents. An oil carrier slows evaporation, which normally helps, but here it mutes the part you wanted and preserves a soft hay-like base most people would not identify as lavender. Indian temperatures make this worse rather than better.
3
Sandalwood has the opposite profile
Its character lives in the heavy fraction
Almost nothing about sandalwood is volatile. An oil carrier holding it against warm skin is close to ideal conditions for the material, which is why sandalwood has anchored the attar tradition for centuries while lavender has not. The honest recommendation here follows from the physics rather than from taste.
Tip: Which is why a house that makes one of these two routes is not necessarily limiting you.
The SOSA principle
Lavender lives in its first ten minutes. An oil carrier mutes exactly that and keeps the part you did not ask for.
Sandalwood is the reverse case, which is why the attar tradition is built on it.

What we can offer against each route

Against the two routes, here is what we have and what we do not. For the sandalwood route, two options with different weights. Ameeri ₹385 is the restrained one: Indian sandalwood, Taif rose, saffron and a soft oudh, where the softness of the oudh is what keeps the composition from becoming a statement. Nawaab ₹399 is the full one: white royal oud leading, with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron behind it. If you want sandalwood specifically rather than sandalwood inside an oriental, Ameeri is the closer of the two and neither is a plain sandalwood soliflore, which we do not make. For the lavender route, nothing on skin. Evening Calm in 50ml from ₹749 is a room fragrance. If the cool, airy direction is what you want on skin, the nearest thing we make is Adaa ₹379, which gets there through musk and bergamot rather than through anything herbal.

The SOSA scent edit
Two routes, honestly mapped
Scent Why it suits the mood
Sandalwood route, restrained Ameeri 3ml · ₹385. Indian sandalwood, Taif rose, saffron, soft oudh. The closer of our two to a quiet wood
Sandalwood route, full Nawaab 3ml · ₹399. Mysore sandalwood under a leading white royal oud with Kashmir saffron. Warm and present
Lavender-musk route, on skin We make none. Lavender's character is volatile and an oil carrier mutes it, so we have not made one
Nearest cool option we make Adaa 3ml · ₹379, which reaches coolness through white musk and bergamot rather than anything herbal

Sometimes the honest recommendation follows from the physics rather than from taste. Sandalwood belongs in an oil. Lavender does not, particularly.

What SOSA actually makes

Every SOSA attar and solid perfume is alcohol-free and assessed for leave-on skin application. Our reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance are home products and are not assessed for skin. Here is the range with the honest description of each, including the families we do not make at all.

What we actually make, and what each one is for
One genuinely clean attar, two woody ones, two musk-based solids, and a room fragrance that is not for skin
Product Where it sits What it is, honestly From
Adaa attar 3ml The clean one · closest to a hotel lobby Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and a white musk accord. The only genuinely clean, airy composition in our attar range, and the honest answer to most hotel-inspired requests ₹379
Nawaab attar 3ml Polished woods · expensive interiors White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. For wooden-interior and quiet-luxury requests rather than clean-linen ones ₹399
Ameeri attar 3ml Warm sandalwood · heritage hospitality Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, saffron and soft oudh. Rose inside a warm resinous structure, closest to a grand Indian hotel atmosphere ₹385
Velour solid 15g White musk base · skin-close Toasted almond and whipped cream over a white musk base. Soft and skin-close, and sweeter than a hotel-clean scent, which we would rather say than imply ₹479
Sterling solid 15g Powdered musk · refined Almond nougat and white amber over powdered musk. Refined and velvety, and genuinely powdery, so not for anyone who has told us they dislike powder ₹469
Hotel Collection 15ml Rooms only · never skin Water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers. Our own interpretation of hospitality scenting, for air rather than for people ₹299

Attars come in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml: Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149; Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165; Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179; Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199; the three-attar trio ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189 against ₹1,173 / ₹2,063 / ₹3,543 bought singly. Solid body perfumes are 15g, alcohol-free, from ₹459. What we do not make as a skin fragrance: white tea, clean linen or cotton musk, lavender, vetiver, cedarwood, aquatic or marine, and pine. Several of those exist in our home range and are not assessed for skin. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

"I want to smell like a five-star hotel" is one of my favourite things a customer can say, because it tells me far more than a note list would. It tells me you want clean rather than sweet, quiet rather than loud, and expensive-feeling rather than obviously perfumed. That is a brief I can work with.

It also comes with two things I have to be straight with you about. The first is that I cannot sell you a hotel's scent. Those are proprietary compositions made for specific groups, and anybody offering you a reproduction is either guessing or doing something they should not. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group. What I can do is work in the same fragrance families and say so honestly.

The second is harder on my own sales. Our home fragrances are not for your skin. Reed oil is assessed for evaporating from a reed in a room. The Hotel Collection is a water-based fragrance for an ultrasonic mist diffuser. Neither has been assessed for leave-on application to a person, and the exposure is completely different. I will not sell you one as the other, however much you like how it smells in your hallway.

And there are things we simply do not make. No lavender attar. No vetiver attar. No white tea, no clean linen, no cedarwood, no aquatic. Several of those scents live in our reed diffusers and stay there. If that is what you came for, I would rather tell you than sell you something adjacent and hope you do not notice. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the real difference between the two?
Temperature. Sandalwood is warm, creamy, dense and close to the skin, giving the impression of being wrapped. Lavender-musk is cool, herbal and clean, reading as open and airy. Both are quiet, so the choice is not about volume.
Why does sandalwood suit an attar better?
Because almost nothing about it is volatile. Its character lives in the heavy fraction, so an oil carrier holding it against warm skin is close to ideal conditions. Lavender's appeal is in its volatile top, which an oil carrier mutes.
Does SOSA make a lavender attar?
No. Our only lavender is the Evening Calm reed diffuser with chamomile, in 50ml from Rs 749, which uses our own alcohol-free reed oil and is a room fragrance not assessed for use on skin.
Which SOSA attar is closest to plain sandalwood?
Ameeri at Rs 385, with Indian sandalwood, Taif rose, saffron and a soft oudh. The softness of the oudh is what keeps it restrained. We do not make a plain sandalwood soliflore.
What if I want the cool, airy direction on skin?
Adaa at Rs 379 is the nearest thing we make, built on a white musk accord with bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac. It reaches coolness through musk and citrus rather than through anything herbal.

Reed diffuser oil and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance are assessed for room use and are not assessed or sold for application to skin. SOSA does not describe its products as chemical-free, hypoallergenic or safe for everyone, publishes no longevity or hour figures, and makes no claim to reproduce any hotel, spa, resort or retail brand's proprietary fragrance.
