Should I buy several small attars for different occasions or one larger bottle of a versatile fragrance I already enjoy?
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles10 min readUpdated October 2026
This question has no universal right answer, only the right answer for how you actually wear fragrance - and the honest way to settle it is to ask yourself one thing: do you want versatility or variety? Some people find a scent they love and wear it almost every day; they are versatility people, and for them a single larger bottle makes complete sense. Others enjoy matching scent to mood and occasion - something fresh for work, something richer for an evening, something festive for a celebration; they are variety people, and a shelf of small bottles serves them far better than one big one. Neither is better; they are different pleasures. What makes the maths interesting is that attars are concentrated, so a single dab is tiny and even a 3ml bottle gives a surprising number of wears - which means this is rarely a question of running out, and almost always a question of how you like to live with fragrance. Below is how to decide, and the honest value trade-off either way.
Quick answers — read this first
Should I buy one big attar or several small ones? It depends on whether you crave versatility or variety. If you have one scent you love and wear most days, a larger 6ml or 12ml bottle is better value per wear. If you want different scents for different occasions, several 3ml bottles or the Attar Trio suit you better. Because attars are concentrated and a dab is tiny, even a small bottle lasts a long time, so this is about how you like to wear fragrance, not about running out. SOSA attars start at Rs 379 for 3ml.
Is a bigger attar bottle better value? Per wear, usually yes - a 6ml or 12ml costs less per millilitre than a 3ml, so if you genuinely wear one scent often, sizing up saves money over time. But that only pays off if you actually use it; a large bottle of a scent you tire of is worse value than a small one you finish. Size up on a proven favourite you reach for constantly, and keep variety in small bottles. SOSA attars come in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml.
How long does a 3ml attar bottle last? Longer than most people expect, because attars are concentrated and you apply only a tiny dab - far less than a spray. The exact number of wears depends entirely on your own usage, so it is not something to put a fixed figure on, but a 3ml is generous for a scent worn occasionally and ideal for trying something before committing to a larger size. Over-applying is the main thing that drains a bottle quickly.
The short answer
Short answer: Decide by whether you crave versatility or variety. If you have one scent you love and wear most days, a larger 6ml or 12ml bottle is better value per wear. If you want different scents for different occasions, several 3ml bottles or the Attar Trio suit you better. Because attars are concentrated and a dab is tiny, even a 3ml lasts a long time, so this is about how you like to wear fragrance, not about running out - and a larger size only pays off on a scent you genuinely use often. SOSA attars come in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, from Rs 379.
The honest frame: longevity (time on skin), projection (how far it reaches) and sillage (the trail) are different things; a scent's heavier base is what persists, and actual hours vary by skin, amount and climate.
How to be sure: wear-test on your own skin and check at 2, 4 and 6 hours with a fresh nose - no honest brand can promise you a fixed hour-count.
A long-lasting attar is not the same as a loud one. Longevity is how long it stays on your skin; projection is how far it reaches; sillage is the trail it leaves - and a scent's heavier base (oud, amber, musk, woods) is what persists after the bright top has gone. Actual hours vary by skin, amount, climate and activity, so the honest test is on your own wrist.
Should I buy several small attars for different occasions, or one larger bottle of a favourite I already enjoy?
Settle it with one honest question: do you want versatility or variety? They are different pleasures, and the right purchase follows directly from which one you are.
If you have a scent you already love and reach for most days - your signature, the one that just feels like you - then you are a versatility person, and a larger 6ml or 12ml bottle is the better buy. The per-millilitre cost drops as the size goes up, so a favourite you wear constantly is cheaper over time in a bigger bottle, and you are not forever re-ordering 3ml. The one caveat is honest: a large bottle only pays off if you actually finish it. Sizing up a scent you later tire of is worse value than a small bottle you enjoy to the end - so size up only on something proven.
If instead you like matching scent to mood - a fresh Adaa for work, a deep Nawaab for an evening, a festive Ameeri for a celebration - then you are a variety person, and several small 3ml bottles serve you far better than one large one. The Attar Trio (Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from ₹1,055) is the natural starting set here: three distinct scents to wear across different occasions, and a chance to discover which one you love enough to later buy in a larger size.
What makes this low-stakes is that attars are concentrated: a dab is tiny, so even a 3ml (from ₹379) gives a generous number of wears - how many depends entirely on your own usage, which is why we will not invent a per-bottle count. Running out is rarely the real issue. The real question is simply how you like to live with fragrance.

One line: versatility or variety? One scent you wear most days -> a larger 6/12ml is better value per wear (if you'll finish it). Different scents for different occasions -> several 3ml or the Trio. Attars are concentrated, so even a 3ml lasts a long time; this is about how you wear fragrance, not running out.
A good place to start is the SOSA Attar Trio (Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani) from ₹1,055 - three oils to wear-test on your own skin - or a single attar from ₹379. Longevity is personal, so try before you judge.
The choice is not really about bottle size, it is about your relationship with scent. A versatility person and a variety person both make a sensible buy - the mistake is buying as if you were the other one.
1
Versatility -> go larger
A proven daily favourite earns a 6/12ml
If you wear one scent most days and are sure of it, size up. A 6ml or 12ml costs less per millilitre than a 3ml, so a constant favourite is cheaper over time and you re-order less often. The honest condition is that you actually finish it - a large bottle of a scent you later cool on is worse value than a small one you love to the last dab. Size up on something proven, not something you are still testing.
Tip: Wear one scent most days? A larger 6ml or 12ml is better value per wear - as long as you will finish it.
2
Variety -> go small and several
Different occasions want different scents
If the appeal of attars for you is matching scent to mood - fresh for work, rich for evenings, festive for celebrations - then several small 3ml bottles serve you far better than one large one. You get range without committing a big bottle to any single scent, and you can rotate by occasion. The Attar Trio is the natural starting set: three distinct scents at once, and a built-in way to discover which you love enough to later buy larger. Variety is a real reason to stay small, not a compromise.
3
Concentration lowers the stakes
Even a 3ml lasts, so it's about how you wear
Because an attar is pure oil and a dab is tiny, even a small bottle gives a generous number of wears - far more than a spray of the same volume. How many depends entirely on your own usage, so no honest brand can print a fixed per-bottle count; over-applying is the main thing that drains one fast. The practical upshot is that running out is rarely the deciding factor. Buy the size that matches how you like to wear fragrance, not the size that promises the most dabs on paper.
Tip: A concentrated attar makes even a 3ml last, so choose by how you like to wear fragrance, not by chasing the most dabs.
The SOSA principle
The buyers who regret a purchase are almost always the ones who bought against their own nature - a variety lover who sized up a single bottle and grew bored of it, or a one-scent loyalist who spread their money across three 3ml bottles and only ever wore one. Get the diagnosis right and the decision makes itself. If you already know your favourite and wear it constantly, a larger bottle is simple good value. If you are still exploring, or you genuinely enjoy switching by occasion, keep things small and let a starter set like the Trio tell you which scent eventually deserves the bigger bottle.
Buy for the wearer you actually are - the versatility lover and the variety lover need opposite bottles
When a 6/12ml makes sense, and when the Trio does
In the SOSA range this plays out neatly. If your versatile favourite is a soft daytime scent, Adaa (bergamot, cardamom, jasmine sambac over white musk) is the kind of easy, everyday wear people size up to a 6ml or 12ml once they know they reach for it constantly. If you lean to variety, the three richer attars give you clear occasion range: Nawaab's deep white-oud for serious evenings, Ameeri's warm rose-woody for festive wear, Mastani's expressive floral-oud for occasions with drama. The Attar Trio bundles exactly those three in small sizes, which is why it is the sensible first purchase for a variety person - you get the range immediately and learn, over a few months, which one you would happily own in a larger bottle. Either way, the attars are alcohol-free and a small dab is all each needs.

What to expect
You wear one scent most days
Size up - a 6ml or 12ml of a proven favourite is better value per wear, provided you will finish it. From Rs 669 (Adaa 6ml).
You want scents for different occasions
Go small and several - a few 3ml bottles or the Attar Trio (from Rs 1,055) give range without committing a big bottle to one scent.
You're still exploring
Start with 3ml or the Trio, learn your favourite over a few months, then size that one up. From Rs 379.
Worried about running out
Rarely the real issue - attars are concentrated, so even a 3ml gives many wears. Over-applying, not bottle size, is what drains one fast.
SOSA attars are alcohol-free concentrated oils, described honestly by character - Adaa for subtle daytime wear, Nawaab and Ameeri for deeper, longer-settling scents. From ₹379.
The buyers who regret a purchase almost always bought against their own nature - get the versatility-or-variety question right and the bottle chooses itself.

A note from Sonal
"Long-lasting" is the most abused word in the attar market. Nearly every bottle claims twelve or twenty-four hours, almost none explain how that was measured, and buyers are left disappointed when a dab does not stay loud from morning to night. As a perfumer, I find that frustrating - because longevity is real, but it is not a single number.
What actually lasts is the base. A scent built on oud, sandalwood, amber or musk settles into a long, soft dry-down; a bright citrus or green opening is lovely but always eases first. So an attar does not "disappear" at hour two - it changes, and often you have simply stopped noticing your own skin. The honest check is a fresh nose, or a friend, a few hours in.
I would rather describe our attars truthfully - Adaa as a subtle daytime wear, Nawaab and Ameeri as deeper, longer-settling scents - and ask you to wear-test on your own skin than print an hour-count I cannot stand behind. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to buy one large attar or several small ones?
Per wear, a larger 6ml or 12ml bottle is cheaper than a 3ml, so if you wear one scent often, sizing up saves money over time. But that only holds if you finish it - a big bottle of a scent you tire of is worse value than a small one you love to the end. For variety across occasions, several 3ml bottles make more sense than one large bottle you would under-use.
How do I decide between versatility and variety?
Ask how you actually wear fragrance. If you have one scent you reach for most days, you want versatility - buy it larger. If you enjoy matching scent to mood and occasion, you want variety - buy several small bottles or a starter set. Most regret comes from buying against your own nature, so diagnose honestly before you choose a size.
How many wears will a 3ml attar give?
More than you might expect, because attars are concentrated and a dab is tiny - far less than a spray. The exact number depends entirely on your own usage, so it is not something to put a fixed figure on. A 3ml is generous for a scent worn occasionally and ideal for trying one before committing to a larger size. Over-applying is what drains a bottle fastest.
Should I buy a large bottle of a scent I'm still testing?
Better not - size up only on a proven favourite you already reach for constantly. A large bottle of something you later cool on is poor value. While you are still exploring, keep to 3ml bottles or the Attar Trio, learn which scent you truly love over a few months, and then buy that one in a 6ml or 12ml.
What's the best first attar purchase for someone who wants variety?
The Attar Trio (Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055). It gives you three distinct scents at once - a warm rose-woody, a deep white-oud and an expressive floral-oud - so you can rotate by occasion and discover which you love enough to later buy in a larger size. It is the natural starting set for a variety-minded buyer.
