Yes, and the gap is not close. Climate changes how a fragrance physically behaves on you. Gender changes what is printed on the box. Following the second while ignoring the first is how people end up with bottles that do not work.
Quick answers — read this first
Does gender affect how a fragrance performs? Not at all. No material in perfumery is gendered - the categories are a century of marketing convention.

Does climate? Substantially. Heat raises projection a full step, humidity slows evaporation, cold suppresses release. These are physical effects.

What about rose, in India? Worn by everyone, and always has been. That coding is imported and recent.
The short answer
Two variables decide almost everything. How dry the composition is, and how much you apply. Dry clears every Indian condition; dose moves opposite to temperature.
The non-negotiable. An oil base rather than alcohol. It behaves on sweating skin, damp skin and cracked winter skin alike. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free.
SOSA in one line. Alcohol-free, DPG-free, IFRA-compliant attars on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, 6-8 hours on skin, 3ml / 6ml / 12ml, ₹379-₹1,199, hand-blended in Pune.
Start here. Adaa 3ml at ₹379 is the safest first purchase in almost any Indian climate - and cheap enough that being wrong costs very little.
Choosing by climate: three Indian conditions, three doses (illustrative)Dry composition, oil base — clears heat, humidity and coldWarm composition — clears cold and functions, limited at midday in heatSweet or deep composition — cold weather and evenings only
Illustrative only. Almost every 'which should I buy' question in Indian fragrance resolves to the same two variables: how dry the composition is, and how much of it you apply.

Straight answer
So should climate matter more than gender when choosing attar?
Yes, and it is not a close comparison. Climate changes the physics of a wear: heat raises projection by about a step and accelerates development, humidity slows evaporation so a scent persists and carries, cold suppresses release and dries the skin. Gender changes nothing about any of that - no perfumery material is gendered, and the categories are a marketing convention roughly a century old. In India the point is sharper still, because rose, oud and sandalwood have always been worn by everyone here. Choose by climate, then by what you like.
Short version: climate changes the physics. Gender changes the box. One of those affects your wear.
Want the short path? Adaa - unlabelled by design, and it clears every Indian climate.

The 3 points, plainly

I sell two attars marketed as masculine and feminine, so I am part of the convention I am describing. That is exactly why I would rather be clear about what it is.

How to answer any of these questions
Almost every which attar should I buy question resolves to two variables: how dry the composition is, and how much you apply. Dry compositions clear all three Indian conditions; sweet ones are seasonal. Dose moves opposite to temperature.
1
Criterion one
No material in perfumery is gendered
There is no molecule that belongs to one gender. The categories were built in the twentieth century by marketing departments - lighter florals to one shelf, heavier woods and leathers to another - and they have been reshuffled several times since. They tell you about a marketing decision, not about a fragrance.
2
Criterion two
Climate changes the physics
Heat raises projection by roughly a step and compresses development. Humidity slows evaporation so a scent persists and carries. Cold suppresses release and dehydrates skin. These are measurable effects on how the bottle behaves on you, and they dwarf any difference between two similar compositions.

Choose by climate: Adaa, and ignore the shelf.

Criterion three
In India the convention is imported and recent
Rose, oud, sandalwood and saffron have been worn by everyone in the subcontinent for centuries. The idea that rose is feminine arrived with Western fragrance marketing and is comfortably younger than the tradition it overwrote. Nawaab is on the masculine shelf and worn by plenty of women; Mastani the reverse.
The buying checklist
The criteria - and how to check each one yourself
What to look for Why it matters for your situation How to check
Dry versus sweet Sweet is seasonal; dry is not What is in the base?
Oil base, no alcohol Works on sweating and cracked skin Ask: alcohol-free? DPG-free?
Dose control Most problems are dose problems Dab applicator, not a spray
Real named materials Interesting at every dose Can they name the notes?
Stated longevity A baseline to adjust from Hours on skin, in writing
A 3ml to test with Blind buying should be cheap Is there a small size?
Fit to your actual day Office, commute, outdoors, evening Where will you wear it?
Storage Heat and light age the oil Capped, upright, out of the sun
"No molecule belongs to a gender. The shelf was invented in the last century."

Where SOSA sits - and where another attar might suit you better

I label two of my four bottles by gender because retail requires it, and I will tell anyone who asks that the labels are the least informative thing on the listing.

The honest position
Climate is physics. Gender is packaging.
Where I think we earn a place on your shortlist: materials and strength stated so you can judge by composition rather than category, and a range where the gendered labels are marketing rather than formulation. Where another house might suit you better: traditional Indian attar houses often do not gender their range at all, which is the older and better practice.
Three things these buying questions usually get wrong
✕
"There is a right bottle for my situation." More often there is a right dose. Most situational problems are solved by applying less or more of what you already own.
✕
"Gender narrows the choice." It narrows it wrongly. Climate and dose decide how a fragrance behaves; the label on the box decides nothing at all.
✕
"Buying blind online is risky." Less so with an attar, because a 3ml costs ₹379 - reviews here are illustrative, not a guarantee, so test rather than trust them.

Pick for your climate, your day and your taste, in that order. Adaa if you want the unlabelled middle; anything else in the range regardless of which shelf it sits on.

The SOSA attar range

All four are alcohol-free and DPG-free in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. None of them contains a gendered material, because no such thing exists.

A note from Sonal

Most of the questions I am asked have the same shape: here is my climate and my day, what should I buy? After a decade of answering them, I have come to think almost all of them resolve to two variables - how dry the composition is, and how much you apply.

Dry compositions clear all three of India's conditions: they do not swell in heat, hang in humidity, or fall apart in cold. Sweet ones are seasonal by nature - which is fine as long as you buy them knowing it. And dose moves opposite to temperature: less when it is hot, more when it is cold. That is genuinely most of it.

Everything I make is alcohol-free and DPG-free on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, and every material is named on the listing so you can place it on that map yourself. If another house does the same and you prefer their composition, buy theirs.

Frequently asked questions

Does my city matter more than the season?
Often, yes. The difference between Delhi and Chennai on the same afternoon is larger than the difference between May and December in Bangalore. Choose for your climate, then adjust by month.
Which SOSA attar should I buy first?
Adaa in 3ml at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the safest first purchase in almost any Indian climate and cheap enough that being wrong costs very little.
How do I decide how much to apply?
Dose moves opposite to temperature: one dab when it is hot, one or two in humidity, two or three when it is genuinely cold. Apply at the base of the throat on dry - or in winter, moisturised - skin.
Which size should I buy?
3ml (₹379-₹399) to discover, 6ml (₹669-₹699) for daily wear, 12ml (₹1,149-₹1,199) for best value at roughly half the per-ml cost of the 3ml.
Do SOSA attars contain alcohol?
No. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free, carried on jojoba and Mysore sandalwood oil and formulated to IFRA levels - which is why it behaves on sweating, damp and cracked skin alike.
