Projection is a different question from duration, and people mix the two up constantly. Duration is how long the fragrance keeps going. Projection is how far it travels from its source. The two formats in this comparison sit at opposite ends of that second question, and once you see why, the buying decision takes about a minute.
Quick answers — read this first
Which has better projection, a room spray or a reed diffuser? A room spray, easily, for the first half hour or so - it pushes a full undiluted dose across the room in one second. A reed diffuser has very little projection by design: it releases by passive evaporation, so the scent is strongest within about an arm's length of the bottle and thins with distance. If projection is what you are buying, the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) cold-diffuses pure undiluted oil actively on 3 speeds with a 1/2/3-hour timer, which is the throw of a spray without the manual press.
Do reed diffusers project across a room? Not far, and that is not a fault. A SOSA reed (from ₹799) is built to hold a small to medium room at a low steady level for 6 to 8 weeks on a 50ml, with no flame, no power and no water. Its reach depends entirely on the air already moving in the room, so it works beautifully in an entrance or a corridor and reads faint at the far end of a large hall.
How do I get fragrance to carry across a big room? You need something that pushes. Passive evaporation cannot cover distance on its own, so the options are a spray each time you want it, or an active diffuser running continuously. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is sized for personal space - a bedside, a desk, a car, a hotel room - and its product page says so plainly. For a whole open floor of about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft you need a machine of that scale rather than a personal one.
The short answer
Short answer: the spray, for about half an hour. Projection means fragrance carrying away from its source, and that needs a push. A spray pushes a whole dose across the room in one second and then stops; a reed does not push at all, so its scent is strongest within an arm's length and depends on whatever air the room is already moving. A reed's job is holding a level, not throwing.
The pick: the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) if projection is your priority - pure undiluted oil released actively, 3 speeds, 1/2/3-hour timer - and a SOSA Garden Bloom reed (from ₹799) if what you want is a room quietly held at a level for weeks.
Next step: tell us the room size and where you stand in it, and we will tell you which one reaches you - ask us by email.
A reed's fragrance moves by whatever air is already in the room, which is why it reads strongest near the bottle. Anything that carries across a room has to be pushed there - by a spray once, or by an active diffuser continuously.
Which has better projection, a room spray or a reed diffuser?
Projection is the distance fragrance travels away from its source, and distance needs energy. A room spray supplies that energy mechanically: the pump atomises a full undiluted dose and throws it several feet in a second, so the far side of a normal room gets fragrance almost immediately. That throw is real and it is the best thing about a spray. It is also over quickly, because the droplets settle onto fabric and floor and the lightest top notes evaporate first, so the level falls away in roughly half an hour. A reed diffuser supplies no energy at all. A reed diffuser works by capillary action: the reeds draw oil up from the bottle and it evaporates from the exposed length at a roughly fixed low rate, set by how many reeds are in, how wide the neck is and how much air is moving past them. Nothing pushes it anywhere; it moves only on whatever air the room already has. That is why a SOSA Garden Bloom reed (from ₹799) reads clearly within an arm's length of the bottle, pleasantly across a small bedroom or an entrance, and faintly at the far end of a big hall. It is also why a reed placed in a corridor or near a doorway outperforms the same bottle in a still corner: the room is doing the carrying. None of this is a defect. A reed is not built to throw, it is built to hold a room at a level for weeks - 6 to 8 on a 50ml, 14 to 18 on a 130ml - with no flame, no power, no water and nothing to switch on. If that is what you want, buy it and stop reading. If what you want is fragrance that reaches you across the room whenever you decide, you need an active mechanism, and the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is the small one: it cold-diffuses pure undiluted fragrance oil on 3 speeds with a 1, 2 or 3 hour auto-off timer, up to 10 hours continuous per Type-C charge. Be honest about scale, though. Its own product page says it is sized for a car or personal space rather than a large room, so it belongs at a bedside, a desk or in a car, not in the middle of an open living and dining floor.
Projection needs a push. A spray pushes once, a reed never pushes, and an active diffuser pushes continuously on a setting you choose.
If projection is the thing you are buying, the SOSA Safar is the direct answer: waterless, cordless cold diffusion of pure undiluted fragrance oil from a 20ml bottle, 3 speed settings, a 1, 2 or 3 hour auto-off timer, and up to 10 hours continuous or 30 hours intermittent per Type-C charge. About 6.9cm, aroma only, no water to dilute the oil. Sized for personal space rather than a large hall, and its product page says so.
We sell both of these and recommend both, for different rooms. The Safar is what you buy when the fragrance has to reach you; the reed is what you buy when the room simply has to smell good whether or not anyone is home. Both pictures link straight to the product page.
Waterless, cordless cold diffusion of pure undiluted fragrance oil. 20ml bottle, 2000mAh Type-C battery, up to 10 hours continuous or 30 hours intermittent per charge, 3 speed settings and a 1/2/3-hour auto-off timer. About 6.9cm. Aroma only, it does not humidify.
Speed one for reading in bed, speed three when you want the space obviously scented. The timer gives you a defined window rather than a burst, so the throw is held for an hour or three and then stops on its own.
Alcohol-free reed diffuser in British rose with night-blooming jasmine. 50ml lasts 6 to 8 weeks, 130ml 14 to 18, depending on the room, airflow and how often you flip the reeds. No flame, no power, no water. Made in India.
Cordless cold diffusion of pure undiluted fragrance oil, 20ml bottle, 2000mAh Type-C battery, up to 10 hours continuous or 30 hours intermittent per charge, 3 speeds, 1/2/3-hour auto-off timer, about 6.9cm. Best for a car, handbag, work desk, bedside and hotel room. The product page is explicit that it is sized for personal space, not for a large room.
Three things that decide how far a fragrance actually carries
Three things decide how far a fragrance carries in your room, and the fragrance you chose is the least important of them.
1
Energy at the source
Nothing travels unless something moves it
A spray pump, a nebulising machine and a fan all supply energy to fragrance molecules and send them somewhere. Passive evaporation supplies none. That is the entire difference in projection between the two formats in this comparison, and it is a difference of mechanism rather than of quality or concentration. A more expensive reed oil evaporates just as passively as a cheap one. If you have ever wondered why a reed that smells lovely up close seems to vanish six feet away, this is the reason, and no product in the category solves it.
Tip: if you need distance, buy a mechanism that pushes, not a stronger fragrance.
The Safar atomises pure oil actively, so the release rate is a setting rather than a function of the weather.
Because a reed cannot push, everything depends on where you put it. A bottle in a still corner behind a sofa scents that corner. The same bottle on a console near the front door, or in a corridor between two rooms, or near an air-conditioning return, gets carried a surprising distance by air that was moving anyway. Warmth helps too: evaporation rises with temperature, so a reed reads stronger in a warm room and quieter in a cold one. Moving the bottle is free, takes ten seconds, and does more for perceived projection than buying a different scent.
Put the Garden Bloom reed where air already moves - an entrance, a corridor, near a return vent - and it reaches much further.
Projection is relative to the space you are asking it to cross. A personal diffuser at a bedside covers the distance between the table and your pillow effortlessly and will still be doing its job at 2am. The same unit in the middle of an open living and dining floor is being asked to cross ten times the distance, and it will read faint no matter what setting you use. The Safar product page is unusually honest about this and says to skip it if you want a large-room diffuser. Believe it, and size the machine to the volume of air rather than to how much you want it to work.
Tip: measure the distance from the machine to where you actually sit before you buy.
The Safar is sized for a car, a desk, a bedside or a hotel room - within a few feet of you, it projects properly.
Projection is a property of the mechanism, not of the fragrance. Ask a passive format to throw and it will disappoint you, however good the oil inside it is.
The right question is never which product is better. It is which one is being asked to do something it was built to do.
Projection you can switch on: SOSA Safar cold-diffuses pure undiluted fragrance oil actively, with 3 speeds and a 1/2/3-hour auto-off timer, up to 10 hours continuous per Type-C charge. ₹3,999.
How far you need it to carry, and what to buy for that distance
Here is the decision in one table, including where we would honestly send you to the reed rather than the machine.
The SOSA plan
How far it needs to carry, and what to buy
Your situation
What actually reaches
You want fragrance to reach you at a desk, bedside or in a car
SOSA Safar (₹3,999). Pure undiluted oil, actively released, 3 speeds, 1/2/3-hour timer. View →
A small bedroom, bathroom or entrance that just needs to smell good
A SOSA reed from ₹799. Holds a level for 6 to 8 weeks on a 50ml with no power at all. View →
A corridor or hallway with air already moving through it
A reed, placed in that airflow. The room does the carrying and the reach is much better than people expect. View →
A single dramatic throw across a large room, right now
Your spray. That is exactly what it is for, and SOSA does not sell one.
Scent choice affects perceived projection more than most people expect. Sharp, bright materials read as loud immediately and fade fast; heavier woods, resins and musks read quieter at first and then hang in the air, which is why a fragrance that seems modest at the bottle can fill a room by evening. If your real question is which format is stronger rather than which carries further, the companion piece is room spray vs reed diffuser on strength, and the pillar on why a room spray smells amazing for ten minutes and then disappears explains where the throw goes after the first few minutes. Our hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own interpretations; we are independent and not affiliated with any hotel.
When the job is holding, not throwing: SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser, alcohol-free British rose with night-blooming jasmine, 50ml for 6 to 8 weeks and 130ml for 14 to 18. No flame, no power, no water. From ₹799.
Fragrance that reaches you, on a setting you choose
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 - pure undiluted oil, 3 speeds, a 1, 2 or 3 hour timer, up to 10 hours continuous per charge. Sized for a bedside, desk, car or hotel room.
One machine and one reed, and they are not competitors so much as colleagues. The Safar projects where you sit; the reed holds a room whether or not anyone is in it. Neither is an air purifier and neither removes an odour at source. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The mistake worth avoiding: buying a personal diffuser for an open living and dining floor and then concluding that waterless diffusion does not project. It does, at the distance it was designed for. If your space is a whole floor, tell us the approximate size and we will point you at the right scale of machine rather than sell you the wrong one - ask us by email.

A note from Sonal
Projection is the word perfumers use for how far a fragrance travels from its source, and it is worth being precise about it, because a lot of shopping disappointment comes from confusing it with longevity. A reed diffuser has excellent longevity and modest projection. A room spray has enormous projection and almost no longevity. They are near-opposites, which is why comparing them as better and worse never quite works.
What I want people to take away is that projection comes from the mechanism. Our reeds use lovely oil, but the oil is not what limits the reach - passive evaporation is, and it limits every reed ever made in exactly the same way. If the fragrance has to cross a room to you, buy something that pushes: a spray each time, or a Safar that pushes continuously on a speed you choose and stops on a timer.
And the limits, because they matter more than any specification. Fragrance is not an air purifier and makes no health claim. It cannot cover a source: bins, damp, a wet mop or last night's cooking need ventilation and cleaning first, or you will simply smell both. On provenance, our reeds and fragrances are made in India while the Safar unit is imported from China with SOSA as the marketer, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Do reed diffusers have good projection?
Not much, and it is by design rather than a fault. Reeds release by capillary action and passive evaporation, so nothing is pushing the fragrance anywhere. It reads clearly within about an arm's length, pleasantly across a small room or an entrance, and faintly at the far end of a large hall. What a reed does exceptionally well is hold that level for weeks with no flame, no power and no water.
How can I improve the reach of my reed diffuser?
Move it into air that is already moving: an entrance, a corridor, a doorway, or near an air-conditioning return. Put all the reeds in rather than half, flip them once a week, and use a 130ml rather than a 50ml in a larger room. Those changes widen the halo noticeably. None of them turn a reed into something that throws across a hall.
Is a waterless diffuser better than a reed for projection?
Yes, because it is active. It atomises pure undiluted fragrance oil and pushes it out on a speed you set, rather than waiting for it to evaporate. The SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 does this with 3 speeds and a 1, 2 or 3 hour timer. The honest caveat is scale: it is sized for a car or personal space, so it projects properly at a bedside or a desk, not across an open living and dining floor.
Why does my room spray reach the whole room and my reed does not?
Because the pump does the work. A spray atomises a full undiluted dose and throws it several feet in one second, so the whole room gets fragrance immediately. Then the droplets settle on fabric and floor, the top notes evaporate first, and the level drops away in roughly half an hour. The reed never reaches as far, but it is still working tomorrow.
Which is better value if I want a room to smell good all the time?
The reed, comfortably. A SOSA reed at Rs 799 for a 50ml runs 6 to 8 weeks unattended, which no spray can match on effort or continuity. Buy the machine when you need the fragrance to reach you at a specific place and time, and buy the reed when the room simply needs to smell good whether anyone is home or not.
