A perfume changes how the air smells. A purifier changes what is actually in the air. Marketing loves to blur the two; I am not going to.

When a car perfume helps with a bad smell, it is masking it - laying a pleasant scent over an unpleasant one while the perfume lasts. It is not chemically destroying the odour molecules, and it is not removing whatever is causing them. The damp mat, the spilled milk, the cigarette residue - all still there.
