Founder Diaries · Fragrance Projection
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated August 2026
Yes - it's completely normal, and I want to take the worry off you first. Strong at the bottle and nothing from the bed is exactly how a passive reed behaves; it's not a defect, it's the format, and reaching the bed is an active-diffusion job.
Quick answers — read this first
Is this normal or is my reed defective? Entirely normal. A reed is passive - oil wicks and evaporates into the air right around the bottle, strong at the source and gone within a couple of feet. From the bed you're simply outside its little bubble. Nothing is broken; reaching the bed just needs the active SOSA Safar (₹3,999).

So it's not the oil being weak? No - the fact that it's strong at the bottle proves the oil is fine. The gap between the bottle and the bed is about reach, which is a property of the method, not the fragrance.

What reaches the bed reliably? Active diffusion. The cordless, waterless Safar pushes scent across a bedroom so it reaches the bed on demand. The Vaayu (₹11,999) is for large rooms - overkill for a bedroom.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes, it's normal - a passive reed is strong at the bottle and fades within a couple of feet, so the bed sits outside its range; to scent the bed switch to active diffusion, the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) for a bedroom rather than the large-space Vaayu.
How to choose: passive ambience in one room → a reed (from ₹749); strong, perfume-like projection in a personal/small room, on demand → the cordless SOSA Safar (₹3,999); room-filling projection across a genuinely large space → the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³). More reeds can't buy projection - the method has to change.
Shop: the Safar for a personal room, the Vaayu for a large space, and reed diffusers for passive ambience.
SOSA Safar - active waterless projection for a personal-sized room Projection is a method, not a scent A reed scents the air around it; for perfume-like throw you need active diffusion - Safar for a personal room, Vaayu for a large space Meet the Safar · ₹3,999
Straight answer
Strong right at the reed, nothing from my bed - is that expected, and what changes it?
1. Hear the reassurance first. This is normal and expected. A reed being strong at the source and invisible a few feet away is the signature of passive diffusion - not a faulty unit, not a bad oil, not anything you did wrong.

2. Locate your bed on the curve. A reed's scent is dense at the bottle and thins sharply with distance. Your bed is almost certainly past the point where the concentration is high enough to notice - which is most of the room, for most reeds.

3. Understand what's absent - reach. To be smelled from across the room, fragrance must be actively carried there. A reed has no way to move scent past its own orbit, so the bed stays neutral however lovely the bottle smells.

4. Bring in active diffusion. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a cordless, rechargeable waterless cold-air diffuser - it atomises oil and pushes a dry mist across the room, so the bed is inside the scented space, not outside it.

5. Keep it bedroom-sized. A bedroom is squarely Safar territory. The Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) is a large-space machine - more than a bedroom needs, and priced accordingly.

Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The pick: SOSA Safar (₹3,999) - active diffusion that reaches the bed. Vaayu is for large rooms, not bedrooms.

Why the bed sits outside a reed's range

REASSURANCE
Strong-then-gone is the reed's signature
Reed diffuser - passive Reed diffuser · passiveFrom ₹749 Let me put your mind at ease: a reed that's powerful at the bottle and undetectable from the bed is behaving perfectly. Passive diffusion means oil evaporates into the immediately surrounding air, so the scent is concentrated at the source and dilutes to nothing within a couple of feet. Your bed is simply beyond that bubble - as it would be with any reed, at any price. This is normal behaviour, not a defect, and no return or refill will change it.
Tip: If it's strong at the bottle, your oil is fine - the gap is about reach.

THE BRIDGE
Active diffusion reaches the bed
SOSA Safar - waterless, cordless SOSA Safar · waterless, cordless₹3,999 The Safar bridges the bottle-to-bed gap that a reed can't. As a waterless cold-air diffuser it breaks concentrated oil into a fine dry cloud and pushes it into the room, so the fragrance travels to the bed, the far wall, the doorway. Switch it on before you settle in and the whole bedroom - your side of it included - carries the scent. And because it's cordless and rechargeable, you get that on demand, then quiet through the night if you prefer.
Tip: Run it as you wind down; the bed is inside the scent, not outside it.

RIGHT-SIZE
A bedroom is a Safar, not a Vaayu
SOSA Vaayu - up to 1000m3 SOSA Vaayu · up to 1000m³₹11,999 When the bed stays neutral, it's tempting to reach for the most powerful machine. But the Vaayu is a nebuliser for up to 1000m³ - large living-dining rooms, open floors, commercial spaces - and in a bedroom it would be overkill and overspend. The Safar reaches the bed at a quarter of the price and the right scale. The bed problem is a sizing problem the Safar already solves; the Vaayu is for a different, much larger room.
Tip: Reaching the bed doesn't need a big machine - it needs the right method.
SOSA Safar - cordless waterless diffuser with perfume-like projection
Perfume-like throw, personal scale SOSA Safar ₹3,999 The SOSA Safar is a cordless, rechargeable waterless cold-air diffuser - active diffusion that pushes fragrance across a room instead of waiting for it to drift. Built for the car and travel, it is exactly the right scale for a personal space: a bedroom, a study, a cabin. Switch it on when you want the room to smell strong, off when you don't. Reed vs Safar, from bottle to bed

The whole story is the second and third rows - where the reed drops off and the Safar carries on.

Match the method to the throw you want - and the space you have
The SOSA principle
'Strong at the bottle, invisible from the bed' isn't a fault report - it's a perfect description of passive diffusion. The bed is a reach problem, and reach is a mechanism.
The bottle scents its bubble; a Safar scents the bed too.
SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air machine for large spaces
When the space is genuinely large SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 For a large living-dining, an open floor, a shop or a villa, the SOSA Vaayu is the waterless cold-air nebuliser built for it - up to 1000m³, with app and timer control. It is deliberately more machine than a single bedroom needs; below roughly a large hall, the Safar is the right-sized, better-value choice. See the Vaayu →
Nothing is wrong with your reed. It is strong exactly where a reed is meant to be strong - and your bed is simply somewhere it was never built to reach.

Which SOSA diffuser matches the projection you want?

Start from the honest question: do you want ambience, or projection? For ambience, a reed is perfect. For projection, the method has to be active - and which active diffuser is set by the size of your space. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Which SOSA diffuser matches the projection you want?
Match the method of diffusion to the throw you want - and the size of the space
What you actually want The method The SOSA product Best for
Soft, always-on background scent Passive - reeds wick & evaporate near the bottle Reed diffuser (from ₹749) Gentle ambience in one room; no power, no controls
Strong, perfume-like projection you can smell across the room, on demand Active - cordless, rechargeable waterless cold-air diffusion SOSA Safar (₹3,999) A personal / small space - bedroom, study, cabin, car; controllable
Room-filling projection across a genuinely large or open space Active - waterless cold-air nebuliser, app + timer SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) Large living-dining, open floors, shops, offices, villas
An even, hotel-style scent without a big machine Active - ultrasonic cool-mist (water-based) Sukoon (₹1,799) / Boond (₹799) A steady room signature; gentler throw than the Safar
How to read this box: the honest thing first - you may not need a stronger fragrance; you may need a stronger method of diffusion. A reed is passive, so it can only ever scent the air right around it - adding sticks makes the oil finish faster, not the room smell stronger. Projection comes from active diffusion, and the right one is set by your space: the cordless, rechargeable Safar (₹3,999) for a personal/small room you can switch on and off, the Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) only when the space is genuinely large. A Vaayu in a 120 sq ft bedroom is overkill; a reed in a big open hall is underkill. The Safar and Vaayu are waterless; the Sukoon/Boond are water-based ultrasonic. Everything is made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA reed diffuser - passive ambience for one room
If you actually want quiet ambience Reed Diffuser From ₹749 A reed diffuser is passive: the reeds wick oil and it evaporates into the air right around the bottle. That is perfect for a soft, always-on background in one room - but it is physically not built to project across a space, no matter how many reeds you add. If ambience is the goal, it is the elegant, no-power answer; if projection is the goal, you have outgrown the format. Shop reeds →

Frequently asked questions

Should I move the reed closer to the bed?
You can, but then only the bed's immediate corner smells of it, and the rest of the room goes neutral - you've just moved the bubble, not enlarged it. To scent the whole room including the bed, switch to the active Safar (₹3,999).
Is it safe to have a diffuser running near where I sleep?
The Safar is a cold-air, waterless diffuser - no heat, no flame, no water - and it's on-demand, so many people run it as they wind down and switch it off for the night. Use it to scent the room before sleep and control the intensity to taste.
Would more sticks reach the bed?
No - more sticks make the bottle smell a bit stronger and finish the oil faster, but they don't extend the range. The bed stays outside the bubble. Reach comes from active diffusion, not stick count.
Do I need the Vaayu for a big bedroom?
Most bedrooms, even large ones, are within Safar range. The Vaayu is built for spaces up to 1000m³ - genuinely large open areas - so keep it for a hall or open floor, not a bedroom.
Can I keep the reed on the dresser for its scent up close?
Yes - a reed is lovely passive ambience right where you pass it, like a dresser or bathroom. Keep it there for the up-close pleasure and let the Safar handle scenting the room and the bed.
All the way to the bed
Strong at the bottle is easy. Strong at the bed takes a method.
The cordless, waterless SOSA Safar is active diffusion for a bedroom - scent that reaches your side of the room, on demand.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. The principle here is about the physics of diffusion: passive reeds evaporate fragrance into the air immediately around them, while active diffusers project it across a space. "Projection", "throw" and "sillage" describe how far a scent travels; how far any diffuser reaches depends on the room size, layout, ventilation and airflow, so treat coverage figures as guidance, not guarantees. No fragrance or diffuser is claimed to be therapeutic or to purify air.
