Attar is one of the oldest return gifts in India, and for good reason. But the honest version of this answer includes what a hand-blended house cannot do at scale.
Quick answers — read this first
Does it work as a return gift? Very well at small scale - a 3ml from ₹379 is a complete gift that guests actually use.

What does it cost per guest? ₹379-₹399 per 3ml bottle. Twenty guests is roughly ₹7,600-₹8,000.

For two hundred guests? Honestly, a bulk gifting supplier is the better route. I hand-blend in small batches and cannot promise that volume.
The short answer
Gifting is a risk problem. You are not guessing their favourite scent - you are minimising the cost of guessing wrong. That points to small sizes and more than one.
The non-negotiable. Do not buy a large bottle of something you are unsure about. The trio of 3ml bottles at ₹1,055 exists for exactly this.
SOSA in one line. Alcohol-free, DPG-free, IFRA-compliant attars in 3ml / 6ml / 12ml, ₹379-₹1,199, hand-blended in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Start here. If you do not know their taste: the Ameeri + Nawaab + Mastani trio at ₹1,055. If you want one safe bottle: Adaa from ₹379.
Gifting fragrance: risk against budget (illustrative)Trio of 3ml bottles — lowest risk, they choose, from ₹1,055One 3ml of the safe composition — lowest cost, from ₹379One large bottle of a guess — highest risk, highest regret
Illustrative only. Gifting fragrance is a risk problem before it is a taste problem. Spreading the same budget across smaller bottles reduces the chance of a wrong guess to almost nothing.

Straight answer
So is attar a good wedding return gift?
Yes at small scale, and I would point you elsewhere at large scale. A 3ml at ₹379 is a genuine gift rather than a token - three to five months of wear - which is more than most return gifts manage at that price, and guests actually use it. For a close-family list of twenty or thirty, it works beautifully. For two hundred guests with printed packaging and a fixed date, a house that hand-blends in small batches is the wrong supplier and I would rather say so than take the order and disappoint you.
Short version: excellent for thirty guests. Wrong supplier for three hundred.
Adaa 3ml, ₹379 each. A complete gift, not a token.

Using attar as a return gift

Two parts to this answer: why it works as a gift, and where the practical limits are.

What a fragrance gift actually is
Gifting fragrance is a risk problem, not a taste problem. You are not trying to pick their favourite scent - you are trying to minimise the chance of a bad guess while still giving something that feels considered. Those two goals point at small sizes and more than one bottle.
1
Criterion one
The discovery size is the real answer
A genuine 3ml at ₹379 - not a sample vial, a real bottle with months of wear in it - is the single most useful thing in fragrance gifting. It lets you give something complete and considered without betting on a guess. Two or three of them is better than one large bottle at the same price, every time.
2
Criterion two
Why guests actually use it
Most return gifts are decorative and end up in a cupboard. A fragrance gets used up, which is the highest compliment a gift at this price can receive. And because it is concentrated oil rather than alcohol, a 3ml is months of wear - the value is real rather than implied.
SOSA Adaa attar — Bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac, white musk - lightest in the range
Adaa — daytime grace. ₹379 per guest for a real 3ml — light, unsweet and safe across a mixed list. From ₹379 (3ml).Shop Adaa →
3
Criterion three
Pick the light one for a mixed guest list
For a group you cannot possibly know individually, buy the low-variance composition: Adaa at ₹379, light, dry, unsweet and unisex. Save the oud and the night florals for gifts where you know the person. This is the one situation where 'safe' is the correct brief rather than a compromise.
My one pick
Adaa 3ml, ₹379 each. Best for a small, close list.
Shop Adaa - from ₹379 →
4
Criterion four
Alcohol-free matters more in a gift than in a purchase
When you buy for yourself, you know your own skin. When you buy for someone else you do not - and a surprising number of people react to alcohol-based sprays, especially on sensitive or freshly shaved skin. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, which removes a risk you cannot otherwise check for.
5
Criterion five
The honest limits of a hand-blended house
Everything here is blended in small batches in Pune. That is why the materials are what they are, and it is also why I cannot promise two hundred units with custom printing on a fixed date. If that is your requirement, a dedicated corporate gifting supplier will serve you better - I would rather tell you now than let you find out in October.
6
Criterion six
Make it legible as considered
A fragrance gift succeeds partly on the story. Being able to say "it is real Taif rose over Mysore sandalwood, hand-blended in Pune by a perfumer who trained at ISIPCA in Versailles" turns a bottle into a present. Name the materials when you give it - it costs nothing and changes how the gift lands.
7
Criterion seven
The Nanhi Kali part
A portion of every SOSA order supports Nanhi Kali, India's largest girl-education initiative. I would not lead with this on a guide about wearing fragrance, but on a gift it is genuinely part of what you are handing over - and it is an easy, true thing to mention when you give it.
The buying checklist
The criteria - and how to check each one yourself
What to look for Why it matters for a gift How to check
Small sizes available Lets you spread risk instead of guessing Is there a real 3ml, not a sample?
More than one bottle They choose; you stop guessing Is there a multi-bottle set?
A safe composition in the range Something almost nobody dislikes Is there a clean, unsweet option?
Named materials Makes the gift legible as considered Can you say what is in it?
Alcohol-free Kind to sensitive skin; safer blind Ask: alcohol-free? DPG-free?
Honest about strength Stops you gifting something overwhelming Is a strength rating stated?
Price legibility A gift should read as deliberate Does the listing explain the value?
A story behind it Turns a purchase into a present Who made it, and why?
"Most return gifts end up in a cupboard. A fragrance gets used up."

Where SOSA sits - and where another gift might suit them better

Small batches are the point of what I do and they are also a real constraint. For a large guest list I am not the right supplier, and saying that costs me an order I would not have been able to fill well.

The honest position
Great at thirty. Wrong at three hundred.
Where I think we earn a place on your shortlist: a real 3ml at ₹379 that guests use, a light unisex composition for mixed lists, and alcohol-free oil. Where another house might suit you better: bulk volumes, custom printed packaging and fixed large-scale deadlines - a corporate gifting supplier is built for that and I am not.
Three things fragrance-gifting advice gets wrong
✕
"A bigger bottle is a better gift." Only if you are right. A large bottle of the wrong scent is a worse gift than a small bottle of the right one - and far more obviously a guess.
✕
"You have to know their taste." You have to reduce the consequences of not knowing. A trio of small bottles does that; a single confident purchase does not.
✕
"Perfume is a risky gift." It is risky the way people usually buy it. Bought small and in multiples it is one of the safest - reviews here are illustrative, not a guarantee.

Small list: 3ml bottles at ₹379 each. Large list: buy from someone set up for volume.

A note from Sonal

People ask me what to gift more often than what to wear, and the honest answer surprises them: stop trying to guess their favourite scent. You will not win that game with someone else's nose. What you can do is reduce the cost of being wrong.

That is the whole reason a real 3ml exists in my range rather than a token sample - and the reason the trio does. Three small bottles at ₹1,055 turns an anxious guess into an invitation: they try all three, they tell you which one is theirs, and next time you know. That is a better present than a large bottle of something they will be polite about.

One more thing, said plainly: a portion of every order supports Nanhi Kali, India's largest girl-education initiative. I mention it here rather than in the other guides because a gift is the one purchase where the story behind it is part of what you are giving.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on an attar as a gift?
₹379-₹699 is a real, complete gift for a friend or colleague. ₹1,055-₹1,199 is a considered gift for a partner, parent or sibling. Above that you are buying certainty you do not have - spread it across more bottles instead.
How long does an attar last, and is it good value as a gift?
6-8 hours on skin per wear, and a 3ml lasts three to five months at one dab a day. Per wear it is far better value than a spray, because you are buying concentrate rather than alcohol.
Which SOSA attar is the safest gift if I don't know their taste?
The trio at ₹1,055 - three 3ml bottles in genuinely different registers, so they choose rather than you guessing. If you want a single bottle, Adaa from ₹379: light, clean and unsweet, which is the composition almost nobody dislikes.
Is attar too personal a gift?
It depends on the size and the register. A 3ml of something clean and unsweet is a perfectly ordinary present for a colleague or a friend. A large bottle of something sensual is a different message - match the register and the size to the relationship.
Can I return an attar if they don't like it?
Not once it has been worn - no fragrance house can take back an opened, used bottle. SOSA replaces anything damaged in transit if you email within 48 hours of delivery with a photo. That limitation is exactly why buying small matters.
