Founder Diaries · Expensive One, Still Weak
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles5 min readUpdated August 2026

You've already learnt the expensive lesson, so let me hand you the useful one. If spending more on the reed didn't fix the reach, that's not because you haven't spent enough — it's because price was never the right dial to turn. The thing to upgrade is the diffusion method: passive to active. And the honest way to choose is by the size of your room.

Quick answer

If price isn't solving it, what do I upgrade? The method, not the reed. Move from passive (reed) to active (a diffuser that pushes scent out).

Why doesn't a pricier reed reach further? Price buys fragrance quality, not throw. Reach is set by the mechanism, and paying more doesn't change it.

How do I choose? By room size — Safar (₹3,999) or Sukoon (₹1,899) for a room, Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large space.

The short version
Short answer: Upgrade the diffusion method, not the price tag. Passive to active is the change that fixes projection.
The pick: Sukoon (₹1,899) or SOSA Safar (₹3,999) for a room; SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large space.

Let me name the trap first, because it's a costly one. When a reed disappoints on reach, the intuitive fix is to buy a better, pricier reed — and when that also disappoints, to buy an even pricier one. You can climb that ladder for a long time and never arrive, because you're upgrading the wrong thing. In a reed, price and projection are simply not connected. A ₹1,500 reed and a ₹500 reed throw scent about the same distance; what you gain by spending more is fragrance quality, oil concentration, longevity and a nicer bottle — all lovely, none of it reach. Projection is set by the mechanism, and every reed shares the same passive mechanism. So no amount of price-climbing moves the dial you actually care about.

The dial that does move it is the diffusion method. Swap passive for active and everything changes: instead of oil quietly evaporating into the still air around the sticks and waiting for the room to carry it, an active diffuser puts energy behind the fragrance and drives it out into the space. That single upgrade — from reed to active diffuser — does more for projection than any price jump ever could. And because "active diffuser" covers a range, the honest next question isn't "how much should I spend?" but "how big is the room?"

The honest upgrade path — by room size
Your space Upgrade to Why
Small room / bedroom / desk, wants strong on-demand throw SOSA Safar ₹3,999 Waterless nebuliser, cordless — strongest compact, perfume-like throw, no humidity
Normal room, wants even set-and-forget scent Sukoon ₹1,899 Ultrasonic cool mist on a timer — affordable, even room-filling
A small nook / washroom / shoe area Boond ₹899 Compact ultrasonic for a small zone
Large open-plan living room / villa SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 Waterless nebuliser, up to 1000 m³, app + timer, no humidity
Upgrade the method, then size the machine honestly. Don't put a large machine in a small bedroom, or expect a compact one to fill a villa.

Here's how I'd read that table for you. If you want the strongest scent in a small room — a bedroom, a study, a desk — and love the idea of switching it on and having the space bloom, the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is the answer: a waterless, cordless nebuliser that atomises neat oil into a fine dry mist for a drier, perfume-like throw, with no added humidity. It's catalogued for car and travel, and I'll always say so, but its cordless, high-throw design makes it excellent indoors. If you'd rather have a normal room gently and evenly scented, set-and-forget, the Sukoon (₹1,899) is the affordable, sensible choice — its one caveat being that it's water-based and adds a little humidity.

And if your problem is a genuinely large open-plan space — the kind where a reed never stood a chance — the upgrade is SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), a waterless nebuliser covering up to 1000 m³ with app scheduling. But I'll be firm about the flip side: don't buy the Vaayu for a small bedroom. Over-sizing the machine is just a different way of spending on the wrong thing. Match it to the space, and the projection problem you've been throwing money at simply dissolves.

SOSA Safar waterless nebuliser, the method upgrade for a small room
Method upgrade for a small room
SOSA Safar ₹3,999
A waterless, cordless nebuliser that atomises neat fragrance into a fine dry mist — drier, more perfume-like and higher-projecting than any reed, with no added humidity. Catalogued for car and travel, but excellent as an on-demand strong scenter for a small room or desk.
SOSA Vaayu waterless machine, the method upgrade for a large open-plan space
Method upgrade for a large space
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999
A waterless cold-air nebuliser covering up to 1000 m³, with Bluetooth app scheduling and a timer, running under 38 dB and adding no humidity. The honest upgrade for a large open-plan living room or villa — not for a small bedroom, where Safar or Sukoon fits better.
The honest core
The dial to turn is the diffusion method, not the price of the reed.
Passive to active is the upgrade that fixes projection. Then size the machine to the room: Safar or Sukoon for a room, Vaayu for a large space.
The honest caveat: upgrading the method won't help if the room is fighting you. Fragrance crowns clean, well-aired space — it never masks damp or stale air. And a strongly cross-ventilated room disperses scent, so even an active diffuser works best with the door mostly closed while it runs.
Frequently asked
If price isn't solving projection, what should I upgrade?
Upgrade the diffusion method, not the price of the reed. Projection is set by how the fragrance leaves the device, not by how much the oil costs. Moving from a passive reed to an active diffuser is the upgrade that changes reach: an active diffuser puts energy behind the fragrance and drives it into the room. Choose the active device by your room size — that is the honest upgrade path.
Why doesn't a more expensive reed project further?
Because price and projection are unrelated in a reed. A costlier reed gives you finer fragrance, higher oil concentration and a nicer bottle, but the same passive mechanism — oil evaporating into the still air around the sticks. Reach depends on that mechanism, and paying more does not change it. This is why upgrading price gets you a lovelier scent that still does not travel any further across the room.
What is the honest upgrade path by room size?
For a small room, bedroom or desk where you want strong on-demand throw, SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is the waterless, cordless nebuliser to choose. For a normal room where you want even, affordable, set-and-forget scent, the Sukoon ultrasonic (₹1,899) is the pick. For a large open-plan living room or villa, SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers up to 1000 m³ with app scheduling. Match the machine to the space and do not over-buy.
Should I stop using reeds completely?
No. Reeds remain lovely for gentle, continuous background scent that needs no power — a soft presence by the bed or in the bathroom. The upgrade is about projection specifically: for that, move to active diffusion. Many people keep a reed for quiet ambience and use an active diffuser when they want the room to smell strong. The two do different jobs and pair well.
