I want an Ayurvedic spa-inspired fragrance - which profiles should I compare when choosing a skin-applied attar?

What buyers ask us about hotel and spa scents
Including the questions where the answer is "we do not make that" and "you cannot put that on your skin"
"I want to smell like a luxury hotel lobby. What do I buy?"
Usually a clean white musk with soft woods. In our range that is Adaa. What we will not do is tell you it reproduces any particular hotel, because it does not and we have no authorisation to try.
Hotel-inspired scent · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Can I wear my reed diffuser oil as a perfume?"
No. Reed oil is assessed for evaporation from a reed in a room, not for leave-on skin application. They are different use cases with different exposure, and we will not sell you one as the other.
Home against skin · answered by Sonal Sahani
"You make a lavender reed diffuser. Do you make a lavender attar?"
No. Evening Calm is Himalayan lavender and chamomile for a room. We do not make a lavender attar, and rather than steer you to something that is not lavender, we will tell you that plainly.
What we do not make · answered by Sonal Sahani
"I want white tea and clean hotel linen on my skin."
We do not make that as an attar. Adaa is the closest thing we have, and it is citrus and jasmine sambac over white musk rather than a linen accord. If linen is the point, we are not your brand for it.
Clean linen · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Which hotel is the Hotel Collection based on?"
It is our own interpretation of a style of hospitality scenting. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group, and it is an ultrasonic diffuser fragrance for rooms rather than a skin product.
Independence · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Will it last all day like my spray?"
We do not publish hour figures for any fragrance, because how long one seems to last depends on your skin, the weather and how quickly you stop noticing it. An oil-carried attar sits close rather than projecting.

We should be clear about one thing before comparing anything. SOSA is a fragrance house, not an Ayurvedic one. We make no Ayurvedic claims, we do not formulate to any Ayurvedic principle, and we will not tell you that a scent balances anything. What we can do is compare the materials themselves as fragrance materials, which is a real and useful comparison.
Quick answers — read this first
Is SOSA an Ayurvedic brand? No. We are a fragrance house. We make no Ayurvedic claims, do not formulate to any Ayurvedic principle, and will not describe a scent as balancing or correcting anything.

So what can you compare? The materials as scents. Chandan or sandalwood is creamy and dense, mogra or jasmine is sweet and narcotic, gulab or rose is fresh and slightly green, kewda is honeyed and unusual, khus or vetiver is rooty and earthy.

Which of these does SOSA make? Chandan in Nawaab and Ameeri, mogra as jasmine sambac in Adaa and night-blooming jasmine in Mastani, gulab as Taif rose in Ameeri and Damask rose in Mastani. No kewda and no khus.
The short answer
Short answer: SOSA is a fragrance house and makes no Ayurvedic claims. As fragrance materials: chandan is creamy and dense, mogra sweet and narcotic, gulab fresh and slightly green, kewda honeyed, khus rooty. SOSA makes the first three and not the last two.
The honest limit: no fragrance we sell reproduces any hotel, spa, resort or retail brand's proprietary scent, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any of them. Where we do not make a family, we say so rather than recommending something adjacent.
Home is not skin: reed diffuser oil and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance are assessed for room use and are not assessed or sold for application to skin. Attars and solid perfumes are the skin products.
Where a hotel-style scent actually lives - and what it is assessed forUltrasonic mist diffuser - water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, room useReed diffuser - its own alcohol-free reed oil, room useAttar or solid perfume - assessed for leave-on skinThe three do not interchangeA scent family can cross between them. A formulation cannot, because the exposure is different.
You can carry a scent family from a room to your skin. You cannot carry a formulation, because a product assessed for evaporating in a room has not been assessed for sitting on you. That distinction is the whole of this guide.
Straight answer
Can you recommend an Ayurvedic attar?
Not as an Ayurvedic product, no, and the distinction matters. What we will not do. We do not formulate to Ayurvedic principles, we hold no Ayurvedic qualification, and we will not tell you that any scent we make balances, corrects, cools or affects anything about you. A perfumer is not a practitioner, and a brand that blurs the two is selling you a claim it cannot support. If you want fragrance chosen on Ayurvedic grounds, that is a conversation with a qualified practitioner rather than with us. What we can do. Compare the materials as scents, which is genuinely useful because many of these materials are shared. Chandan, sandalwood: creamy, dense, faintly milky, warm, extremely long-wearing in an oil. Mogra, jasmine: sweet, narcotic, heady, and much bigger than people expect. Gulab, rose: fresh, slightly green at the top, deeper underneath, more versatile than either. Kewda, pandanus: honeyed, slightly fruity, distinctly Indian and quite unusual. Khus, vetiver: rooty, earthy, dry. We make the first three. Ameeri ₹385 has chandan and gulab together. Adaa ₹379 has mogra as jasmine sambac. No kewda and no khus. +91 96192 18531.
No Ayurvedic claims from us. But chandan, mogra and gulab are real fragrance materials we work with and can compare honestly.
If the brief is clean, quiet and expensive-feeling, the honest starting point in our range is Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml. If it is polished woods, Nawaab at ₹399.
from ₹379

What we can and cannot say about this

There is a version of this question that deserves a straight answer, which is why so many of the materials overlap in the first place. The answer is geography rather than doctrine. Sandalwood, jasmine, rose, vetiver and pandanus all grew in India, were all distilled here for centuries, and were used across every context that wanted scent: temples, medicine, courts, weddings, and personal adornment. The traditional Indian perfumery repertoire and the traditional Indian materia medica therefore share a shelf, not because perfumers were practising medicine but because both were drawing on the same local plants. That shared shelf is the whole reason an attar can feel connected to a wellness tradition without any claim being made, and it is also why a brand can be honest about this without being dismissive. The materials really are the same materials. What changes is the claim attached to them. We are happy to tell you that our chandan is Indian sandalwood and that it smells creamy and dense and lasts well in an oil. We are not willing to tell you what it does to you, and you should be wary of any fragrance brand that is, because the information required to make that claim responsibly is not information a perfume house holds.

1
Why the materials overlap
Geography, not doctrine
Sandalwood, jasmine, rose, vetiver and pandanus all grew in India and were all distilled here for centuries, used across temples, medicine, courts, weddings and personal adornment alike. The perfumery repertoire and the traditional materia medica share a shelf because both drew on the same local plants.
Tip: Which is why an attar can feel connected to a tradition without any claim being made at all.
2
Where the line sits
The material is shared, the claim is not
We will tell you our chandan is Indian sandalwood, that it smells creamy and dense and that it lasts well in an oil carrier. We will not tell you what it does to you. The information required to make that claim responsibly is not information a perfume house holds, and a brand claiming otherwise is overreaching.
3
The comparison that is actually useful
Five materials, five scent profiles
Chandan is creamy, dense and durable. Mogra is sweet, narcotic and bigger than expected. Gulab is fresh and green at the top with depth underneath, and the most versatile of the three. Kewda is honeyed, faintly fruity and unusual. Khus is rooty, dry and earthy. That is a comparison we can stand behind.
Tip: We make chandan, mogra and gulab, and we make no kewda and no khus.
The SOSA principle
The perfumery shelf and the traditional medicine shelf hold the same plants, because both grew in the same country.
That is a fact about geography. It is not a licence for a perfumer to make claims a practitioner would make.

The materials, and the boundary

Where the materials sit in our range, so you can compare what exists. Chandan with gulab: Ameeri ₹385 - Indian sandalwood with Taif rose, plus saffron and a soft oudh. The closest thing we make to a traditional Indian material pairing. Chandan at full weight: Nawaab ₹399 - Mysore sandalwood with Kashmir saffron under a leading white royal oud. Mogra, transparent: Adaa ₹379 - jasmine sambac used lightly, with bergamot, green cardamom and a white musk accord. Mogra at full weight: Mastani ₹389 - night-blooming jasmine with Damask rose and oudh, which is mogra as a statement rather than a suggestion. Not made: kewda, khus. If either is the material you are after, we do not have it and will not offer you something adjacent under its name. All four attars are assessed against a leave-on skin-applied fine fragrance use case.

The SOSA scent edit
Five traditional materials, mapped
Scent Why it suits the mood
Chandan, sandalwood Creamy, dense, faintly milky, very durable in an oil. Ameeri ₹385 as Indian sandalwood, Nawaab ₹399 as Mysore sandalwood
Mogra, jasmine Sweet, narcotic, bigger than expected. Transparent in Adaa ₹379 as jasmine sambac, at full weight in Mastani ₹389
Gulab, rose Fresh and slightly green at the top with depth underneath. Taif rose in Ameeri ₹385, Damask rose in Mastani ₹389
Kewda and khus Honeyed and unusual; rooty and dry. Neither is made by us, and we will not offer something adjacent under either name

What SOSA actually makes

Every SOSA attar and solid perfume is alcohol-free and assessed for leave-on skin application. Our reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance are home products and are not assessed for skin. Here is the range with the honest description of each, including the families we do not make at all.

What we actually make, and what each one is for
One genuinely clean attar, two woody ones, two musk-based solids, and a room fragrance that is not for skin
Product Where it sits What it is, honestly From
Adaa attar 3ml The clean one · closest to a hotel lobby Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and a white musk accord. The only genuinely clean, airy composition in our attar range, and the honest answer to most hotel-inspired requests ₹379
Nawaab attar 3ml Polished woods · expensive interiors White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. For wooden-interior and quiet-luxury requests rather than clean-linen ones ₹399
Ameeri attar 3ml Warm sandalwood · heritage hospitality Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, saffron and soft oudh. Rose inside a warm resinous structure, closest to a grand Indian hotel atmosphere ₹385
Velour solid 15g White musk base · skin-close Toasted almond and whipped cream over a white musk base. Soft and skin-close, and sweeter than a hotel-clean scent, which we would rather say than imply ₹479
Sterling solid 15g Powdered musk · refined Almond nougat and white amber over powdered musk. Refined and velvety, and genuinely powdery, so not for anyone who has told us they dislike powder ₹469
Hotel Collection 15ml Rooms only · never skin Water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers. Our own interpretation of hospitality scenting, for air rather than for people ₹299

Attars come in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml: Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149; Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165; Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179; Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199; the three-attar trio ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189 against ₹1,173 / ₹2,063 / ₹3,543 bought singly. Solid body perfumes are 15g, alcohol-free, from ₹459. What we do not make as a skin fragrance: white tea, clean linen or cotton musk, lavender, vetiver, cedarwood, aquatic or marine, and pine. Several of those exist in our home range and are not assessed for skin. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

"I want to smell like a five-star hotel" is one of my favourite things a customer can say, because it tells me far more than a note list would. It tells me you want clean rather than sweet, quiet rather than loud, and expensive-feeling rather than obviously perfumed. That is a brief I can work with.

It also comes with two things I have to be straight with you about. The first is that I cannot sell you a hotel's scent. Those are proprietary compositions made for specific groups, and anybody offering you a reproduction is either guessing or doing something they should not. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group. What I can do is work in the same fragrance families and say so honestly.

The second is harder on my own sales. Our home fragrances are not for your skin. Reed oil is assessed for evaporating from a reed in a room. The Hotel Collection is a water-based fragrance for an ultrasonic mist diffuser. Neither has been assessed for leave-on application to a person, and the exposure is completely different. I will not sell you one as the other, however much you like how it smells in your hallway.

And there are things we simply do not make. No lavender attar. No vetiver attar. No white tea, no clean linen, no cedarwood, no aquatic. Several of those scents live in our reed diffusers and stay there. If that is what you came for, I would rather tell you than sell you something adjacent and hope you do not notice. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Formulation and use: SOSA attars are formulated with an oil carrier and no added ethanol, contain no intentionally added DEP, and are assessed as leave-on fine fragrance applied to skin at their actual selling concentration. Supplier IFRA conformity statements, declarable-allergen lists and the finished-product safety assessment are available per product on WhatsApp on +91 96192 18531; formula compositions and percentages are not disclosed. Reed diffuser oil and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance are assessed for room use and are not assessed or sold for application to skin. SOSA does not describe its products as chemical-free, hypoallergenic or safe for everyone, publishes no longevity or hour figures, and makes no claim to reproduce any hotel, spa, resort or retail brand's proprietary fragrance. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel, hospitality or fashion group. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live collection pages.

General context: Fragrance safety standards set limits by product use category, so a composition assessed for diffusion in a room has not thereby been assessed for leave-on skin exposure. Nothing on this page is medical advice; if your skin reacts to a fragrance, stop using it and speak to a dermatologist.
