What buyers ask us about hotel and spa scents
Including the questions where the answer is "we do not make that" and "you cannot put that on your skin"
"I want to smell like a luxury hotel lobby. What do I buy?"
Usually a clean white musk with soft woods. In our range that is Adaa. What we will not do is tell you it reproduces any particular hotel, because it does not and we have no authorisation to try.
Hotel-inspired scent · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Can I wear my reed diffuser oil as a perfume?"
No. Reed oil is assessed for evaporation from a reed in a room, not for leave-on skin application. They are different use cases with different exposure, and we will not sell you one as the other.
Home against skin · answered by Sonal Sahani
"You make a lavender reed diffuser. Do you make a lavender attar?"
No. Evening Calm is Himalayan lavender and chamomile for a room. We do not make a lavender attar, and rather than steer you to something that is not lavender, we will tell you that plainly.
What we do not make · answered by Sonal Sahani
"I want white tea and clean hotel linen on my skin."
We do not make that as an attar. Adaa is the closest thing we have, and it is citrus and jasmine sambac over white musk rather than a linen accord. If linen is the point, we are not your brand for it.
Clean linen · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Which hotel is the Hotel Collection based on?"
It is our own interpretation of a style of hospitality scenting. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group, and it is an ultrasonic diffuser fragrance for rooms rather than a skin product.
Independence · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Will it last all day like my spray?"
We do not publish hour figures for any fragrance, because how long one seems to last depends on your skin, the weather and how quickly you stop noticing it. An oil-carried attar sits close rather than projecting.

You have named the three right materials, and the thing that decides whether they produce the effect is the proportion rather than the presence. Musk dominant, woods supporting, florals transparent. Change those proportions and the same three materials give you a soap, a temple or a bouquet instead.
Quick answers — read this first
What proportion works? Musk dominant, soft woods supporting underneath, florals transparent and small. That ordering is what produces a clean expensive impression rather than a recognisable perfume.

What happens if you change it? Florals dominant gives you a bouquet. Woods dominant gives you a temple or a cigar room. Musk dominant with nothing under it gives you soap. The three materials can produce four completely different effects.

Which combination does SOSA make? Musk dominant with transparent florals and light citrus, in Adaa. We also make woods dominant, in Nawaab and Ameeri. We do not make a musk-plus-cedar or musk-plus-white-tea combination at all.
The short answer
Short answer: The effect is a proportion: musk dominant, soft woods supporting, florals transparent and small. Florals dominant gives a bouquet, woods dominant gives a temple, musk alone gives soap. SOSA makes musk-dominant in Adaa at Rs 379 and woods-dominant in Nawaab at Rs 399.
The honest limit: no fragrance we sell reproduces any hotel, spa, resort or retail brand's proprietary scent, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any of them. Where we do not make a family, we say so rather than recommending something adjacent.
Home is not skin: reed diffuser oil and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance are assessed for room use and are not assessed or sold for application to skin. Attars and solid perfumes are the skin products.
Where a hotel-style scent actually lives - and what it is assessed forUltrasonic mist diffuser - water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, room useReed diffuser - its own alcohol-free reed oil, room useAttar or solid perfume - assessed for leave-on skinThe three do not interchangeA scent family can cross between them. A formulation cannot, because the exposure is different.
You can carry a scent family from a room to your skin. You cannot carry a formulation, because a product assessed for evaporating in a room has not been assessed for sitting on you. That distinction is the whole of this guide.
Straight answer
What combination of musk, woods and florals produces the hotel effect?
Musk dominant, woods supporting, florals transparent, in that order of weight. Get the order wrong and the same three materials give you something completely different. Florals dominant produces a bouquet, which announces that you are wearing perfume. Woods dominant produces a temple or a cigar room, depending on whether the wood is resinous or smoky. Musk dominant with nothing underneath produces soap, clean but cheap-feeling and slightly flat. The hotel effect specifically needs all three present with musk leading, soft woods giving it a floor so it does not read as detergent, and florals present only at the level where they add light rather than a recognisable flower. That is a narrow target and it is why so few attars hit it. Most of the attar market is built the other way round, with florals or resins leading, because that is what the tradition rewards. In our range the musk-dominant combination is Adaa at ₹379: a white musk accord with jasmine sambac transparent above it and bergamot and green cardamom for lift. The woods-dominant combination is Nawaab at ₹399, which is a different and louder effect. Ask us at +91 96192 18531.
Musk leading, woods underneath, florals transparent. Reorder those three and you get a bouquet, a temple or a bar of soap.
If the brief is clean, quiet and expensive-feeling, the honest starting point in our range is Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml. If it is polished woods, Nawaab at ₹399.

Three proportions that produce the effect

The proportion point is worth taking seriously because it explains why note lists are such poor shopping guides. Two attars can list white musk, sandalwood and jasmine and smell nothing like each other, because one has the jasmine at a level where you can name it and the other has it at a level where it merely makes the musk brighter. Nothing in a note list tells you which, and the vocabulary of top, heart and base does not help either, since both products might legitimately describe the same three materials in the same positions. This is why describing the atmosphere you want works better than describing notes: "clean, quiet, expensive, no recognisable flower" is a brief a perfumer can act on, whereas "musk, sandalwood and jasmine" is a list that could produce almost anything. There is a second and subtler reason the musk-leading proportion matters, which is about how the composition behaves over time. Musk is tenacious, so a musk-dominant fragrance changes relatively little across a day: what you smell in the morning is roughly what you smell in the evening, quieter. A floral-dominant composition changes a great deal, because florals are more volatile and the base emerges as they go. Hospitality scenting values the first behaviour, because a lobby should smell the same at nine in the morning and nine at night, and a person who wants that quality on their skin is asking for the same stability. That is a genuine advantage of the proportion rather than merely an aesthetic preference.

1
Musk leading, and why
The clean signal and the stability at once
Musk supplies the cleanness and, because it is tenacious, it also supplies stability: a musk-dominant composition smells roughly the same across a day, only quieter. That is exactly what a lobby does and exactly what somebody chasing this effect on their skin is asking for, even if they have never articulated it that way.
Tip: If you want to smell the same at nine in the evening as at nine in the morning, that is an argument for a musk-led composition.
2
Woods underneath, as the floor
Without them, clean becomes detergent
Musk on its own reads as soap: clean, flat and slightly cheap. A soft creamy wood underneath gives it a floor and converts clean into expensive. This is the component most people leave out of their own brief, and it is the difference between smelling washed and smelling considered.
3
Florals transparent, not nameable
Light rather than a bouquet
The floral should be present at a level where it brightens the musk and absent at the level where somebody can name the flower. That is the whole skill, and it is why two attars listing the same three materials can smell entirely unalike. Note lists cannot tell you the proportion, which is why describing the atmosphere works better than describing notes.
Tip: Tell a seller "clean, quiet, no nameable flower" rather than listing materials. It is a brief rather than an inventory.
The SOSA principle
Two attars can list white musk, sandalwood and jasmine and smell nothing alike, because a note list cannot tell you the proportion and the proportion is the whole effect.
Which is why describing the atmosphere you want gets you a better recommendation than describing the materials you think produce it.

The combination we make, and the two we do not

What we make against the three combinations. Musk-dominant with transparent floral: yes. Adaa at ₹379, which is the one to buy for this brief. Woods-dominant: yes, in Nawaab at ₹399 and Ameeri at ₹385, both of which are warmer and more declarative than a lobby. Musk with cedar, or musk with white tea: no. We do not make either, and those are the two combinations most often described in hotel-scent requests after the first one. Cedar exists in our Mountain Breeze reed diffuser as a room fragrance that is not assessed for skin. If the musk-cedar combination is specifically what you want, we are not your brand for it and you should look elsewhere rather than settling for Nawaab.

The SOSA scent edit
Four combinations from the same three materials
Scent Why it suits the mood
Musk leading · woods under · floral transparent The hotel effect. Adaa 3ml ₹379 is the one we make, with a white musk accord, light citrus and transparent jasmine sambac
Woods leading A temple or a polished interior rather than a lobby. Nawaab 3ml ₹399 or Ameeri 3ml ₹385, both warmer and more declarative
Florals leading A bouquet, which announces the perfume. Mastani 3ml ₹389 is this, deliberately, and it is the wrong brief here
Musk with cedar or white tea The other two combinations people ask for, and we make neither as a skin fragrance. We would rather say so than offer a substitute

For the mechanism behind why this proportion reads as expensive, why luxury hotel fragrances smell airy, clean and expensive. For the narrower choice between the two families, white musk attar or sandalwood-musk attar for a subtle hotel scent. And for how to describe what you want so a perfumer can act on it, which scent characteristics to describe when requesting recommendations. Describe the atmosphere to us at +91 96192 18531 and we will name the family. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Musk on its own is soap. Put a soft wood underneath it and the same musk becomes expensive. That one decision is most of this fragrance style.

What SOSA actually makes

Every SOSA attar and solid perfume is alcohol-free and assessed for leave-on skin application. Our reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance are home products and are not assessed for skin. Here is the range with the honest description of each, including the families we do not make at all.

What we actually make, and what each one is for
One genuinely clean attar, two woody ones, two musk-based solids, and a room fragrance that is not for skin
Product Where it sits What it is, honestly From
Adaa attar 3ml The clean one · closest to a hotel lobby Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and a white musk accord. The only genuinely clean, airy composition in our attar range, and the honest answer to most hotel-inspired requests ₹379
Nawaab attar 3ml Polished woods · expensive interiors White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. For wooden-interior and quiet-luxury requests rather than clean-linen ones ₹399
Ameeri attar 3ml Warm sandalwood · heritage hospitality Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, saffron and soft oudh. Rose inside a warm resinous structure, closest to a grand Indian hotel atmosphere ₹385
Velour solid 15g White musk base · skin-close Toasted almond and whipped cream over a white musk base. Soft and skin-close, and sweeter than a hotel-clean scent, which we would rather say than imply ₹479
Sterling solid 15g Powdered musk · refined Almond nougat and white amber over powdered musk. Refined and velvety, and genuinely powdery, so not for anyone who has told us they dislike powder ₹469
Hotel Collection 15ml Rooms only · never skin Water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers. Our own interpretation of hospitality scenting, for air rather than for people ₹299

Attars come in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml: Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149; Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165; Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179; Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199; the three-attar trio ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189 against ₹1,173 / ₹2,063 / ₹3,543 bought singly. Solid body perfumes are 15g, alcohol-free, from ₹459. What we do not make as a skin fragrance: white tea, clean linen or cotton musk, lavender, vetiver, cedarwood, aquatic or marine, and pine. Several of those exist in our home range and are not assessed for skin. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

"I want to smell like a five-star hotel" is one of my favourite things a customer can say, because it tells me far more than a note list would. It tells me you want clean rather than sweet, quiet rather than loud, and expensive-feeling rather than obviously perfumed. That is a brief I can work with.

It also comes with two things I have to be straight with you about. The first is that I cannot sell you a hotel's scent. Those are proprietary compositions made for specific groups, and anybody offering you a reproduction is either guessing or doing something they should not. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group. What I can do is work in the same fragrance families and say so honestly.

The second is harder on my own sales. Our home fragrances are not for your skin. Reed oil is assessed for evaporating from a reed in a room. The Hotel Collection is a water-based fragrance for an ultrasonic mist diffuser. Neither has been assessed for leave-on application to a person, and the exposure is completely different. I will not sell you one as the other, however much you like how it smells in your hallway.

And there are things we simply do not make. No lavender attar. No vetiver attar. No white tea, no clean linen, no cedarwood, no aquatic. Several of those scents live in our reed diffusers and stay there. If that is what you came for, I would rather tell you than sell you something adjacent and hope you do not notice. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What proportion of musk, woods and florals produces the hotel effect?
Musk dominant, soft woods supporting underneath, and florals transparent and small. That ordering produces a clean expensive impression. Change the order and the same three materials give you a bouquet, a temple or a bar of soap instead.
Why do note lists mislead here?
Because a note list cannot tell you the proportion, and the proportion is the whole effect. Two attars can list white musk, sandalwood and jasmine and smell nothing alike, depending on whether the jasmine is nameable or merely brightening the musk.
Why does musk need something underneath it?
Because musk on its own reads as soap: clean, flat and slightly cheap. A soft creamy wood gives it a floor and converts clean into expensive. It is the component most people leave out of their own brief and the difference between smelling washed and smelling considered.
Which combination does SOSA make?
Musk-dominant with transparent floral and light citrus, in Adaa at Rs 379. Woods-dominant in Nawaab at Rs 399 and Ameeri at Rs 385. We do not make a musk-and-cedar or musk-and-white-tea combination as a skin fragrance.
How should I describe what I want to a seller?
Describe the atmosphere rather than the materials. Clean, quiet, expensive, no recognisable flower is a brief a perfumer can act on. Musk, sandalwood and jasmine is a list that could produce almost any of four different effects.
Buy the family, not the brand name
