A car is the smallest space any of us scents, and the one we sit closest to. Two or three cubic metres of air, a metre from your face, with the windows up and the heater on for four months of the year. I say this to customers constantly and it still surprises people: almost every car fragrance problem I am sent is a dose problem, not a scent problem. The bottle is not weak and the oil is not wrong. The cabin simply gives fragrance nowhere to go, and winter takes away the little ventilation that was rescuing you in October.

That is why we sell the hanging bottle and the spray at the same price. They are the same oil. One gives you a mild level that is always there and asks nothing of you; the other gives you a strong level the moment you decide you want one. Neither is the better product, and pricing them differently would only push people toward whichever we wanted to sell. Choose by how you drive: a long daily commute is a hanging car, a car that matters most when somebody else gets into it is a spray car, and plenty of people quite sensibly run both.

Frequently asked questions

Will a mild car fragrance ruin the new-car smell?
It will change it, which is not quite the same thing but is worth being honest about. In a sealed cabin of a few cubic metres, anything you release mixes with what is already in the air before it reaches your nose, so you experience a combination rather than two separate smells. A mild continuous fragrance at the tightest stopper setting changes the impression least, and most people find the result reads as a new car with something dry underneath rather than as a perfumed car. If preserving the new-car smell exactly as it is matters more to you than having a fragrance, then the correct answer is to add nothing for now. That is a legitimate choice and it costs you nothing, and in three or four months the question will have answered itself.
How long does new-car smell last?
Months rather than weeks, and it varies with the car, the materials, the climate and how the vehicle is used. Off-gassing from adhesives, plastics, foams, carpet backing and seat treatments is at its most active when the car is new and tapers as those materials finish curing. A car that is driven daily and ventilated regularly loses it faster than one that sits closed in a basement, and warm weather generally accelerates it. We deliberately do not publish a number, because anyone who gives you a precise one for your car is guessing. What matters practically is that it fades on its own without any product, and that anything you add now will be sitting under a baseline that is quietly shrinking month by month.
Is there a car product that keeps the new-car smell going?
Not one we make, and not one we would recommend looking for. New-car smell is a by-product of materials curing, not a fragrance that can be topped up, and a fragrance sold as smelling like a new car would still be a fragrance added to a cabin - which means it mixes with whatever off-gassing is left rather than extending it. Should I use a spray instead, so it is only there sometimes?
It is a reasonable idea and it has one real advantage: a spray is temporary, so the car returns to its own smell between uses. The trade-off is that a spray delivers a concentrated dose in a single moment, which is the loudest thing you can do in a cabin that still smells new, and that peak is exactly what a passenger meets if you spray as they get in. If you go this way, use one spray in a sedan, 15 to 30 minutes before you want it, aimed low and away from surfaces, windows cracked for a minute and then closed - and never spray while driving or toward the windscreen. Does winter change how much of the new-car smell I notice?
Yes, in both directions, and it is worth knowing. A closed heated cabin has almost no air exchange, so off-gassing accumulates rather than clearing, and warm air lifts volatiles faster off every surface in the car - which is why a new car can smell noticeably stronger of itself on a cold morning with the heater running than it did with the windows down. The same physics applies to anything you add, so a fragrance set in October reads stronger in January without anything having changed. The correct winter move is down, not up: tighten the stopper or use one spray instead of two. Airing the car for a minute or two before you set off makes more difference than most people expect.
