Nearest resinous warmth: the St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour — amber, violet, woods — ₹299 for 15ml. It is an amber, not an oud. It is water-based and needs an ultrasonic machine: Sukoon ₹1,899 or Boond ₹899.
If it must be a reed: Fresh Brew at ₹849, 9.5 on the SOSA strength scale and the deepest thing we make — real Coorg coffee, not resin. Or Mountain Breeze at ₹849 for the dry version of seriousness.
2. The nearest thing in the house is the St. Regis-inspired ₹299. Amber, violet and woods — the plush, polished, after-eight register. It is an amber and I will keep saying so. It is also water-based, so it goes in an ultrasonic machine and never in a reed bottle.
3. If it has to be reeds, buy Fresh Brew at ₹849. At 9.5 it is the deepest and warmest scent we make, and it gives a room the gravitas of a warm evening — though it gets there through real Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla rather than through a resin.
4. If your oud is the serious one rather than the plush one, buy Mountain Breeze at ₹849. Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar, 9.4, dry and structural. Some people who say oud mean gravitas without sweetness, and this is that.
5. If it genuinely must be agarwood, buy it elsewhere — and ask three questions first. Natural agarwood or an accord. What the price per millilitre works out to. And if natural, whether it is plantation-sourced. A seller who answers all three straightforwardly is worth buying from whatever the answers turn out to be.

The three things you probably like about oud
Here is the move that makes this page worth your time. Oud is a word, and underneath the word are three or four qualities you can shop for by name. Once you know which of them you are chasing, the shelf opens up considerably — because the qualities are widely available even where the material is not. Read the three below and see which one makes you nod.
St. Regis-inspired₹299This is the commonest one. Light fragrances sit at the top of a room and leave the lower half of it empty; resinous ones fill the whole volume, so the air feels furnished rather than sprayed. In real oud that weight comes from the agarwood resin itself. In practically every home fragrance you have met, it comes from an amber base — a construction of warm, heavy, slow materials. The St. Regis-inspired ₹299 is exactly that, done properly, with violet softening the amber so it lands as polished rather than heavy.
Fresh Brew₹849The smoke and leather edge is what separates oud from ordinary warmth, and it is also the most easily reproduced part of it, because roasting anything produces the same family of molecules. Fresh Brew comes at it from an unexpected direction — real roasted Coorg coffee bean over Kerala vanilla and a soft caramel — and at 9.5 it is the deepest scent in the range. Aditya R. in Delhi wrote that "winter in Delhi + heater room + this diffuser = the only acceptable indoor situation", which is precisely the after-dark effect an oud buyer is usually after. Sneha T. in Mumbai says it smells like the Coorg estate she visited. It is coffee, not resin. It behaves like resin in a room.
Mountain Breeze₹849This is the real reason most people fall for oud, and it has nothing to do with agarwood. Oud signals seriousness — it is the opposite of a scented candle from a gift shop, and a room wearing it reads as considered. Gravitas comes in two versions. The plush one is amber, and that is the St. Regis-inspired ₹299. The dry, structural one is woods without sweetness, and on reeds that is Mountain Breeze at ₹849 — Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar at 9.4, the only dry-woody reed we make. Karishma N. bought it for her father's study and he asked for a second one, which is the review I would put on the box.
Why your oud is almost certainly an accord — and why that is the good news
Oud is agarwood resin. An Aquilaria tree only produces it when infected by a particular mould, which makes the raw material a wound rather than a harvest: uncommon in the wild, slow to form, tightly trade-controlled, and per gram among the most expensive natural materials in perfumery. The arithmetic is the whole story. A home fragrance selling for a few hundred rupees cannot contain a meaningful quantity of it, and no amount of marketing language changes that. So what is in the bottle is an oud accord: a constructed impression, built from woods, resins, ambers and a smoky-leathery facet, and often a very good one.
This is easily mistaken for an accusation and it is not one. Accords are ordinary, legitimate perfumery — the whole craft is building impressions from available materials, and a well-made oud accord in a room is a lovely thing. The point is only that you have probably never been buying agarwood, and therefore the thing you love is not agarwood. Which means it is available. If what you fell for came through a candle, a diffuser or an affordable perfume, you fell for a woody-amber construction — and those are on sale everywhere, including here, under their own names rather than a borrowed one.
What you like about oud, what it actually is, and what to buy
Find your row. The last one is the row where the answer is that we cannot help you, and it is in the table for the same reason as the other four.
| What you like about oud | What it actually is | What to buy | Format and price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resinous depth ★ | In real oud, agarwood resin. In nearly all home fragrance, an amber base | St. Regis-inspired — amber · violet · woods | Water-based, ultrasonic only · ₹299 for 15ml |
| A smoky, roasted, leathery edge | Roasting products — the same molecular family, whatever you roast | Fresh Brew — Coorg coffee · Kerala vanilla · caramel, 9.5 | Reed diffuser · ₹849 / 50ml · ₹1,349 / 130ml |
| Warmth after dark | Heavy base materials that stay at nose height for months | Fresh Brew — the deepest and warmest scent SOSA makes | Reed diffuser · ₹849 · 6–8 weeks on 50ml |
| Gravitas, dry version | Woods with the sweetness taken out — cedar and vetiver territory | Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine · sage · Indian cedar, 9.4 | Reed diffuser · ₹849 / 50ml · ₹1,349 / 130ml |
| Actual agarwood | Aquilaria resin formed by mould infection — rare, slow, trade-controlled | Nothing at SOSA. No oud in the reeds, no oud in the Hotel Collection | Not sold here, in any format, at any price |
The format decides before the fragrance does
One practical thing before you buy, because it catches people out. SOSA's reed oil and the Hotel Collection are two different products and they are not interchangeable in either direction. The reed diffusers are oil-based, sitting on a heat-stable CCT carrier with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle. The Hotel Collection is water-based and goes only into an ultrasonic machine. You cannot pour one into the other, and there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser — so the St. Regis-inspired amber, the nearest thing we have to your brief, exists only on the ultrasonic side. That is a ₹299 bottle plus a Boond at ₹899 for rooms up to 150 sq ft, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 for 270–320 sq ft, which includes three 15ml scents and is the better first purchase if you intend to explore.
If you would rather not own a machine, that is a perfectly good reason to buy a reed instead, and it changes the recommendation. On reeds the deep answer is Fresh Brew ₹849 and the dry answer is Mountain Breeze ₹849, both 50ml for rooms up to about 150 sq ft and 6–8 weeks, both at 130ml for ₹1,349 and 14–18 weeks if the room is larger. Use all six reeds in a living room, three or four in a bedroom, and flip them every five days or so. Fresh Brew at 9.5 on three reeds is a quite different proposition from Fresh Brew on six.
What to buy, in order — and the gap, stated once more
In the order I would buy it if you had written to me directly. The last row is the row this page is really about, and it is the reason I would rather you left having spent nothing than having spent ₹849 on something described to you as an oud.
| Buy | What it is | When it is the right answer | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. St. Regis-inspired 15ml ★ | Amber, violet and woods — an amber, and not an oud | If the oud you like is the plush, polished, after-eight one | ₹299 |
| 2. Sukoon or Boond | The machine the Hotel Collection requires — 270–320 sq ft, or up to 150 sq ft | Bought with the above, because water-based scent needs one | ₹1,899 / ₹899 |
| 3. Fresh Brew 50ml | Coorg coffee, Kerala vanilla, soft caramel — 9.5, the deepest reed we make | If you want depth on reeds and will accept coffee instead of resin | ₹849 |
| 4. Mountain Breeze 50ml | Himalayan pine, sage, Indian cedar — 9.4, the only dry-woody reed | If your oud is seriousness without sweetness | ₹849 |
| No oud, anywhere: the honest gap | There is no agarwood in the reed line and none in the Hotel Collection. The reed line also has no sandalwood, no vetiver, no teak and no amber | If it must be genuine oud, buy from someone who sells it — and ask the three questions | Not sold |
Versailles
I get asked for oud more than for any other note we do not make, and for a long time I felt I ought to build one. I decided against it for a reason that is not romantic: I could not make an oud I would be willing to describe accurately. Either it contains agarwood, in which case it cannot cost ₹849, or it does not, in which case calling it oud is borrowing a word to sell an amber. Neither version is a product I want on the shelf, so there is no oud at SOSA, and there will not be one until the first version becomes possible.
What I would say to you, though, is that the absence matters far less than it sounds. In fifteen conversations with people who came in asking for oud, roughly fourteen were describing an accord they met in a candle or a bottle of perfume, and when we took the word apart what they wanted turned out to be depth, a burnt edge, and a room that felt grown-up. All three of those are on this page with prices next to them.
And if you are the fifteenth — if it really is agarwood — then ask your seller whether it is natural or an accord, what the price per millilitre comes to, and if natural, whether it is plantation-sourced. Someone who answers all three without flinching deserves your money whatever the answers are.
