Founder Diaries · Fragrance Projection
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated August 2026
You have added stick after stick and the room still won't smell the way you want - so the instinct is to add more. But you are pouring money into the wrong technology: a reed is passive, and no number of extra reeds turns passive evaporation into projection.
Quick answers — read this first
Why doesn't adding reeds make it stronger? Because more reeds only means more oil evaporating near the bottle at once - a bit more scent right there, not more reach. Projection across a room needs an active push, which a reed never has. The upgrade is method, not count: the cordless
SOSA Safar (₹3,999).
How many reeds is 'enough', then? There is no 'enough' number for projection - reeds hit a hard ceiling and stall well short of filling a room. Past a handful of sticks you are mostly burning oil faster. If the room still isn't strong, that is the signal to switch to active diffusion.
Do I need the big Vaayu to finally get strength? Not for one room. The
Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) is for large open spaces. In a bedroom or study the right-sized answer is the
Safar - strong, on-demand, a quarter of the price.
The short answer
Short answer: Stop adding reeds - passive evaporation has a hard ceiling; switch to active diffusion sized to the room, which for a single room is the cordless, waterless SOSA Safar (₹3,999), with the Vaayu reserved for genuinely large spaces.
How to choose: passive ambience in one room → a
reed (from ₹749); strong, perfume-like projection in a personal/small room, on demand → the cordless
SOSA Safar (₹3,999); room-filling projection across a genuinely large space → the
SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³). More reeds can't buy projection - the method has to change.
Projection is a method, not a scent A reed scents the air around it; for perfume-like throw you need active diffusion - Safar for a personal room, Vaayu for a large space Meet the Safar · ₹3,999
Straight answer
I keep adding reeds and it still isn't strong enough - what should I actually do?
1. Notice what the pattern is telling you. Each new reed helped a little, then less, then barely at all. That flattening curve isn't a bad batch of oils - it is passive evaporation reaching its natural limit. You have found the ceiling, not a shortage of reeds.
2. Name why the reed can't go further. A reed works by capillary action - oil climbs the sticks and evaporates into the immediately surrounding air. Evaporation has no force behind it, so the scent never travels far, however many sticks are wicking at once.
3. Change the method, not the quantity. Projection needs something that actively lofts fragrance into the room. The
SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a cordless, rechargeable waterless cold-air diffuser - it atomises oil and pushes it outward, so the whole room reads as scented.
4. Size it to your room. A single bedroom or study is the Safar's home ground. Keep the
Vaayu (₹11,999) for large living-dining rooms and open floors - it would be overkill in a personal space.
5. Redeploy the reeds you already own. They are not wasted - a reed is lovely, no-power ambience for a bathroom, a wardrobe or an entry console. Move them there and let one active diffuser do the projecting.
Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The pick: SOSA Safar (₹3,999) - active, waterless, right-sized for one room. Not more reeds, not Vaayu.
Why every extra reed helps a little less
1
THE CEILING
Passive evaporation plateaus
Reed diffuser · passiveFrom ₹749 The first reed gives you a scented pool by the bottle. The second and third thicken that pool a touch, but they do not extend its edges - evaporation still has no push. By the time you have crammed in a fistful of sticks you have doubled the oil consumption and barely moved the reach. That flat line is the format's ceiling, and adding more reeds cannot lift it because the physics is passive, not powered.
Tip: If reed number four does almost nothing, the answer isn't reed number five.
2
THE UPGRADE
Active diffusion adds the push
SOSA Safar · waterless, cordless₹3,999 The Safar stops relying on evaporation. As a waterless cold-air diffuser it atomises concentrated oil into a fine dry mist and pushes it into the room, so fragrance actually travels to the far wall. That push is the one thing reeds structurally lack - it is why one active diffuser clears a bar a whole cluster of reeds cannot reach. And it is cordless and rechargeable, so you switch it on for a strong hit and off when you're done.
Tip: One Safar does what an ever-growing pile of reeds keeps failing to.

RIGHT-SIZE
One room means Safar, not Vaayu
SOSA Vaayu · up to 1000m³₹11,999 Frustration tempts you toward the biggest machine, but bigger isn't the fix - correct is. The Vaayu nebuliser is built for up to 1000m³: halls, open floors, shops. In a single room it would be more than the volume needs and more than your budget should spend. The Safar is the honestly right-sized active diffuser for a bedroom or study - strong throw at personal scale.
Tip: Buy for the room you have, not for how annoyed the reeds have made you.
Perfume-like throw, personal scale SOSA Safar ₹3,999 The SOSA Safar is a cordless, rechargeable waterless cold-air diffuser - active diffusion that pushes fragrance across a room instead of waiting for it to drift. Built for the car and travel, it is exactly the right scale for a personal space: a bedroom, a study, a cabin. Switch it on when you want the room to smell strong, off when you don't. The projection ladder
Match the method to the throw you want - and the space you have
The SOSA principle
Adding reeds does not add reach - it adds oil consumption. Distance across a room is bought with an active method, not a bigger bundle of sticks.
The reeds aren't failing; they have hit the ceiling of what passive can do.
When the space is genuinely large SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 For a large living-dining, an open floor, a shop or a villa, the SOSA Vaayu is the waterless cold-air nebuliser built for it - up to 1000m³, with app and timer control. It is deliberately more machine than a single bedroom needs; below roughly a large hall, the Safar is the right-sized, better-value choice. See the Vaayu →
You aren't a few reeds short of success. You are one method away from it.

Which SOSA diffuser matches the projection you want?
Start from the honest question: do you want ambience, or projection? For ambience, a reed is perfect. For projection, the method has to be active - and which active diffuser is set by the size of your space. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

How to read this box: the honest thing first -
you may not need a stronger fragrance; you may need a stronger method of diffusion. A reed is passive, so it can only ever scent the air right around it - adding sticks makes the oil finish faster, not the room smell stronger. Projection comes from
active diffusion, and the right one is set by your space: the cordless, rechargeable
Safar (₹3,999) for a personal/small room you can switch on and off, the
Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) only when the space is genuinely large. A Vaayu in a 120 sq ft bedroom is overkill; a reed in a big open hall is underkill. The Safar and Vaayu are waterless; the Sukoon/Boond are water-based ultrasonic. Everything is made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
If you actually want quiet ambience Reed Diffuser From ₹749 A reed diffuser is passive: the reeds wick oil and it evaporates into the air right around the bottle. That is perfect for a soft, always-on background in one room - but it is physically not built to project across a space, no matter how many reeds you add. If ambience is the goal, it is the elegant, no-power answer; if projection is the goal, you have outgrown the format. Shop reeds →
A note from Sonal
Everything is made and supported from Pune, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. You get a room that actually smells the way you wanted; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a maximum number of reeds I should use in one bottle?
Most bottles top out around 6-8 sticks before extra reeds just drink the oil faster without adding reach. But even at the maximum, a reed only scents its immediate air. If that isn't strong enough, more sticks won't fix it - the active
Safar (₹3,999) will.
Would a stronger or more concentrated reed oil help instead?
It makes the near-bottle scent richer, not further-reaching. Concentration and projection are different levers - projection needs an active push. For whole-room strength, put the budget toward the
Safar rather than a pricier reed oil.
Is the Safar enough for a whole room, or should I get Vaayu to be safe?
For a single bedroom or study the Safar is more than enough. The
Vaayu is built for spaces up to 1000m³ and would be overkill in one room. Buy for the space you actually have.
Does the Safar use water like a humidifier?
No - it is waterless. It diffuses concentrated fragrance oil as a dry cold-air mist, so there is no dampness and the throw is stronger than a water-based ultrasonic like the
Sukoon.
What do I do with all the reeds I've bought?
Redeploy them. Reeds are excellent passive ambience for bathrooms, wardrobes, entryways and small nooks - anywhere a soft, no-power background suits. Just stop asking them to project across a room.
Stop adding, start projecting
You don't need one more reed. You need a different method.
The cordless, waterless SOSA Safar is the active, right-sized answer for one room - real projection, on demand, for the price of a few reed refills.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. The principle here is about the physics of diffusion: passive reeds evaporate fragrance into the air immediately around them, while active diffusers project it across a space. "Projection", "throw" and "sillage" describe how far a scent travels; how far any diffuser reaches depends on the room size, layout, ventilation and airflow, so treat coverage figures as guidance, not guarantees. No fragrance or diffuser is claimed to be therapeutic or to purify air.
