People often imagine an ultrasonic diffuser heats or burns something. It does not. The honest, slightly surprising answer to how ultrasonic diffusers work is that they use sound-range vibration to turn water and fragrance into a cool mist - no heat at all.

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and understanding the mechanism is the key to using one well. Below I explain exactly what happens inside the tank, why it has to be a water-based diffuser fragrance like the SOSA Hotel Collection, and what an ultrasonic diffuser does and does not do.

Quick answers — read this first
How does an ultrasonic diffuser work? It uses a small disc that vibrates at a very high (ultrasonic) frequency. That vibration atomises water and a water-based fragrance into a fine, cool mist, which drifts into the room. There is no heat and no flame involved.

Do ultrasonic diffusers use heat? No. Unlike a candle or a heat diffuser, an ultrasonic diffuser produces a cool mist through vibration, not heat. That means the fragrance is not burned off, and the unit stays cool to the touch.

What do you put in an ultrasonic diffuser? Water and a few drops of a water-based diffuser fragrance, such as the SOSA Hotel Collection. Raw essential or carrier oils are thick and oily and can clog the misting plate, so a water-based fragrance is what you want.
The short answer
Short answer: A disc vibrates at high frequency, atomising water and a water-based fragrance into a fine, cool mist. No heat, no flame - it scents and lightly humidifies, but does not purify air.
The mechanism: high-frequency (ultrasonic) vibration breaks water plus fragrance into micro-droplets you see as mist.
What to fill it with: water plus a water-based diffuser fragrance like the Hotel Collection (15ml ₹299) - not raw essential or carrier oils, which can clog the plate.
SOSA diffusers: Boondh, Sukoon and Phuhaar, paired with the Hotel Collection. Ships in 24 hrs from Pune.

How does an ultrasonic diffuser work?

An ultrasonic diffuser works by vibration, not heat. Inside the water tank sits a small ceramic or metal disc; when you switch the unit on, that disc vibrates at an ultrasonic frequency - tens of thousands of times a second, far above what your ear can hear. Those rapid vibrations break the water and the water-based fragrance in the tank into millions of microscopic droplets, which rise out of the unit as a fine, cool mist carrying the scent into the room. Because there is no heat, the unit stays cool, the fragrance is not burned off, and you get a gentle, even diffusion plus a little humidity. The catch is that the misting plate is designed for a thin, water-based liquid: a few drops of a water-based diffuser fragrance disperse cleanly, while thick essential or carrier oils, or alcohol perfume, can coat or clog the plate over time. So the mechanism is simple and elegant - high-frequency vibration atomising water and fragrance into mist - and it works beautifully as long as you feed it the right fragrance. One honest point: it scents and lightly humidifies the room; it does not purify the air.

In one line: a disc vibrates at ultrasonic frequency, atomising water and a water-based fragrance into a fine, cool mist. No heat, no flame - it scents and humidifies, it does not purify.

What happens inside the tank

It helps to picture the inside of the unit. You fill the tank with water to its line, add a few drops of water-based fragrance, and replace the lid. At the base of the tank is a tiny disc - the transducer. When powered, it flexes and relaxes at an ultrasonic frequency, and that fast motion sends pressure waves through the water that shear the surface into an extremely fine spray. What you see leaving the unit is that spray: a cool, soft mist of water and fragrance.

The mechanism, in plain words
An ultrasonic diffuser uses high-frequency vibration to atomise water and fragrance into mist. No heat, no flame - the mist is cool. It carries scent and a little humidity into the room. It needs a water-based diffuser fragrance like the SOSA Hotel Collection, because the misting plate is built for a thin, water-soluble liquid.

Because nothing is heated, the fragrance is not cooked or burned - you smell it much as it was composed, and the unit is safe to leave running cool in a bedroom. The mist also adds a touch of humidity, which is why these units are popular in dry or air-conditioned rooms. But the same fineness that makes it work is why the fragrance matters: the plate is calibrated for a thin liquid, so a water-based fragrance keeps it misting evenly.

Why it is a cool mist, not a burn
Older heat diffusers warmed oil to release scent, which could dull or alter it. An ultrasonic diffuser uses vibration instead of heat, so the scent stays true and the unit stays cool - a real advantage for delicate fragrances and for safety.

Using one well

Once you know it is a vibrating plate atomising a thin liquid, using one well becomes obvious. Use clean water, a water-based fragrance, only a few drops, and wipe the tank now and then. The most common way people damage a diffuser is by pouring in the wrong liquid.

Do and do not
What to put in an ultrasonic diffuser
Liquid In an ultrasonic diffuser
Water + water-based diffuser fragrance Yes - mists cleanly, plate stays clear
Raw essential oils No - thick and oily, can clog the plate
Carrier oils (e.g. coconut, almond) No - too heavy to atomise, coats the disc
Alcohol perfume / attar No - alcohol and oils can damage the plate

That is really the whole secret. A SOSA Hotel Collection fragrance is water-based and phthalate-free, composed to IFRA standards specifically to run through an ultrasonic diffuser like Sukoon or Boondh. A few drops per fill, clean water each time, and the unit will mist evenly for a long time. Treat the plate kindly and an ultrasonic diffuser is one of the easiest, gentlest ways to scent a home.

It is vibration, not fire. Feed it water and a water-based fragrance, and a cool, even mist carries the scent for hours.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and the one thing every great hotel taught me is that scent is the first thing you notice and the last thing you forget. I wanted to bottle that feeling for the home.

So the Hotel Collection is seven water-based diffuser fragrances, each my own interpretation of the style a famous hotel is known for - composed in our own lab, made to run cleanly through a SOSA ultrasonic diffuser. Please use the SOSA diffuser fragrance only; raw essential or carrier oils are thick and can clog the misting plate.

To be clear and honest: these are inspired interpretations, not the hotels' actual proprietary scents. SOSA is not affiliated with or endorsed by the hotels named - the names just describe the scent style. I would rather you knew exactly what you are buying: a perfumer's take on that hushed, expensive calm, at an honest price.

Frequently asked questions

How does an ultrasonic diffuser work?
A small disc vibrates at a very high (ultrasonic) frequency, atomising water and a water-based fragrance into a fine, cool mist that drifts into the room. There is no heat and no flame involved.
Do ultrasonic diffusers heat or burn the fragrance?
No. The mist is produced by vibration, not heat, so the unit stays cool and the fragrance is not burned off. That keeps the scent close to how it was composed.
What liquid goes in an ultrasonic diffuser?
Water plus a few drops of a water-based diffuser fragrance, such as the SOSA Hotel Collection. Raw essential oils, carrier oils and alcohol perfume are thick or harsh and can clog or damage the misting plate.
Do ultrasonic diffusers purify the air?
No. An ultrasonic diffuser scents a room and adds a little humidity through its cool mist, but it does not clean or purify the air. It is a fragrance and light-humidity device, not an air purifier.
Which SOSA diffusers use the Hotel Collection fragrance?
SOSA's ultrasonic diffusers - Boondh, Sukoon and Phuhaar - are made to run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. A few drops in the water tank gives a clean, hotel-inspired mist.
