Do ultrasonic diffusers use heat? No. Unlike a candle or a heat diffuser, an ultrasonic diffuser produces a cool mist through vibration, not heat. That means the fragrance is not burned off, and the unit stays cool to the touch.
What do you put in an ultrasonic diffuser? Water and a few drops of a water-based diffuser fragrance, such as the SOSA Hotel Collection. Raw essential or carrier oils are thick and oily and can clog the misting plate, so a water-based fragrance is what you want.
An ultrasonic diffuser works by vibration, not heat. Inside the water tank sits a small ceramic or metal disc; when you switch the unit on, that disc vibrates at an ultrasonic frequency - tens of thousands of times a second, far above what your ear can hear. What happens inside the tank

When powered, it flexes and relaxes at an ultrasonic frequency, and that fast motion sends pressure waves through the water that shear the surface into an extremely fine spray. What you see leaving the unit is that spray: a cool, soft mist of water and fragrance.
Because nothing is heated, the fragrance is not cooked or burned - you smell it much as it was composed, and the unit is safe to leave running cool in a bedroom.
