Clean the source first, because scent cannot
Let me be honest with you straight away, because it is the kindest thing I can do for your home and your pet. Fragrance does not remove pet smell. Pet odour soaks into fabric, carpet, bedding and the spots where accidents have happened, and a scent on top of that simply sits over it. The smell you are trying to clear is a cleaning job, and the good news is that cleaning works.
So here is the work that actually clears it. Wash your pet bedding weekly, because it holds the most smell of anything in the house. Treat accident spots properly: surface wiping leaves the odour underneath, so clean them fully and let them dry out. Groom your pet regularly to cut down loose hair and dander, which spreads the smell around. Vacuum fabric and floors often. And ventilate every day, because pet odour builds up fastest in closed rooms.
Soft furnishings are where pet smell hides longest. Sofa covers, cushion covers, throws and curtains all hold it. Washing or airing these regularly often clears a smell that no amount of scent could touch.
None of this is about masking. It is about removing the smell at its source so the room is actually fresh, not merely perfumed over. Once you are on top of the cleaning, fragrance has a real and pleasant job to do, and you can add it safely.
Adding scent, safely, with pets around
Safety comes before scent in a home with animals, and I would rather you bought nothing than used something unsafely. Keep reed diffusers, fragrance oils and candles out of your pet's reach. A diffuser knocked over by a curious cat or dog is a spill and a hazard, and some essential oils are not safe for animals, especially cats. Myth: a strong air freshener solves pet smells. It masks them briefly and adds nothing to the actual cause, which is in the fabric. Worse, a heavy scent in a small space is not pleasant for an animal whose nose is far more sensitive than yours.
