A villa that has stood shut for a week is a different job from a flat, and not only because it is bigger. It has more bathrooms, so more drain traps to dry out; it has floors, so the air separates by temperature; and it usually stands empty for longer. The good news is that a villa also gives you the single most useful ventilation tool there is, which is a staircase. Here is how to work one properly, and then how to size the fragrance to it.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I make a villa smell good after it has been closed for a week? Work it as a whole building, not room by room. Open the highest window in the stairwell and a low opening on the ground floor so the stack effect pulls stale air up and out, then open internal doors on every floor and run the ceiling and exhaust fans. Pour water down every drain, floor trap and unused bathroom, and a villa usually has more of these than anyone remembers. Strip the beds and stand the mattresses in moving air, prop the cushions and open the wardrobes. Then scent by air volume: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, so most villas need one per floor.

How many scent machines does a villa need? Size it by air volume, not by room count. Multiply length by width by height for each connected volume and divide by 1000 cubic metres, which is what one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft. A typical two-floor villa is two machines, one per floor on the stair air path, both running the same fragrance. Where a single volume is genuinely double height or the house runs to 8,000-10,000 sq ft, one SOSA Angaan (₹25,999) on the HVAC is the honest answer instead of stacking small machines.

Why does a villa smell worse than a flat after being closed? Because there is more of everything and less connection between it. More bathrooms means more drain traps drying out, more floors means air separates by temperature with the warm stale air sitting upstairs, more wardrobes and stored linen means more closed boxes holding moisture, and more soft furnishing means more surface holding residue. A villa also usually stands emptier for longer. The method is the same as a flat, just done floor by floor and starting with the stairwell.
The short answer
Short answer: work it as a building. Open the top of the stairwell and a low opening so stale air leaves through the top, open internal doors on every floor, run the fans, then pour water down every drain and floor trap because a villa has many more of them than a flat. Strip the beds, stand the mattresses in moving air, open the wardrobes. Then scent by air volume - one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) per 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, usually one per floor.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) per floor on the stair air path, both running the same fragrance. Where a single volume is genuinely double height or the villa runs to 8,000-10,000 sq ft, one SOSA Angaan (₹25,999) on the HVAC instead.
Next step: send us the floor areas and ceiling heights and we will do the volume maths before you buy anything - ask us what fits your home.
A villa after a week shut, in the order to work itStairwell first: open top and bottom, the whole house becomes one chimneyEvery drain, floor trap and unused bathroom - villas have the most of theseBedrooms: strip beds, stand mattresses, open wardrobes on outside wallsGround floor: cushions on edge, rugs lifted, kitchen and utility opened upThen scent by air volume - one Vaayu per 1000m³, Angaan if a volume is huge
The stairwell is the most useful thing in a villa. Open the highest opening and a low one and warm stale air leaves through the top while cooler air is drawn in below, which clears three floors faster than opening every window on one level.

Straight answer
What is the right way to open up and freshen a villa after a week closed?
Treat the house as one chimney rather than as fifteen rooms. Start with the stairwell. Open the highest window or terrace door at the top of the stair and a low opening on the ground floor, then open every internal door on every floor. Warm, stale air rises and leaves through the top while cooler air is drawn in below, and that stack effect will move more air through three floors in twenty minutes than opening every window on one level will. Add the ceiling fans and every bathroom and kitchen exhaust fan, which actively push air out of the building. Then the drains, and a villa is where this really matters. The one nobody mentions: in a house that has stood empty, the water seal in every floor trap, basin and unused bathroom drain slowly evaporates. Once that seal is gone, the drain is an open pipe and sewer air comes back up into the room. It is one of the most common causes of a shut-house smell and it costs nothing to fix - pour a mug or two of water down every drain, floor trap and unused bathroom in the house. A four-bedroom villa can easily have six or seven floor traps, several basins, a utility gully, a servant bathroom and a powder room nobody has used since Diwali, and every one of them is a potential open pipe. Take a jug and do the entire house, including the ones outside on the terrace and in the utility yard. Then the soft materials, floor by floor. Bedrooms first because they are usually the worst: strip the beds, stand mattresses on their sides in moving air, prop pillows, open every wardrobe and especially any that back on to an external wall. Downstairs, prop the sofa and chair cushions on edge, lift the corners of rugs, open the kitchen cabinets and the utility. In a coastal or monsoon villa expect this step to take a half day rather than an hour, because damp soft material is the difference between stale and musty, and musty is a cleaning problem rather than an airing one. Then, last, scent - and size it by air volume. Multiply length by width by height for each connected volume and divide by 1000m³, which is what one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. Most two-floor villas come out at one machine per floor, placed on the stair air path rather than in a far corner, both running the same fragrance so the house smells like one house. If a single volume is genuinely double height, or the villa runs to 8,000-10,000 sq ft, stop stacking small machines and use one SOSA Angaan (₹25,999) on the HVAC, which carries scent on the airflow the building already has. Both are waterless, which is the point in a house that stands empty between visits. Fragrance does not remove odour molecules. It adds fragrance on top of them, so scent sprayed into a shut-up house gives you both smells at once. A diffuser is not an air purifier, it does not disinfect, dehumidify or remove off-gassing, and it makes no health claim. Open the house, move the air, wet the drains, dry the soft things, and only then scent the space. A free scenting plan will do the volume maths from your drawings, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Open the top of the stairwell and a low opening, run the fans, water down every one of the villa's many drain traps, air the beds and cushions floor by floor. Then one machine per 1000m³.
For most villas the answer is one SOSA Vaayu per floor: waterless, rated to 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), under 38dB, 400ml tank lasting up to about 75 days, on the stair air path with the same fragrance in both. Step up to the Angaan only if a single volume is genuinely double height or the house is 8,000-10,000 sq ft.

The two machines a villa uses

There are only two machines in a villa specification and the difference between them is air volume, not luxury. Most villas are over-specified rather than under-specified, and one machine per floor is usually the honest answer.

Working a large house in the right order

Three things make a villa different from a flat, and all three change what you do on arrival day.

1
Use the staircase
A villa ventilates vertically, and that is an advantage
Warm air rises. In a house with floors, the stale, warm air of a shut week collects at the top of the stairwell and in the upstairs rooms, which is exactly why the first floor smells worse than the ground floor when you walk in. Open the highest opening you have, a terrace door, a stair window or a skylight, and then a low opening on the ground floor, and the house will draw air through itself without any help. Open every internal door so the floors connect. Run the ceiling fans to break up still layers and every bathroom and kitchen exhaust to push air out of the building. Twenty minutes of that does more than an hour of open windows on a single floor, and it works even on a still day, because it is driven by temperature rather than wind.
Tip: highest opening plus a low one. The stair does the work for you.
SOSA Vaayu
Place the Vaayu on that same air path afterwards, near the stair or the AC return, not in a far corner where nothing moves.

2
A villa has far more drain traps
Count them, then fill every one
This is where villas differ most from flats and where the worst smells come from. Four or five bathrooms, a powder room, a utility gully, a servant bathroom, terrace drains, a kitchen floor trap and often a pooja room or store with its own drain. Each one holds a plug of water that seals the room from the sewer line, and each one evaporates in an empty house within a week or two. The bathrooms nobody uses dry out first, which is why a guest suite is such a common culprit. Take a jug, walk the whole house including the terrace and the utility yard, and pour a mug or two into every single one. Do it again before you lock up, and ask your caretaker to run every tap for thirty seconds a fortnight. If the smell in the villa is specifically sewer-like, this is your answer and no fragrance will touch it.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu is a fragrance machine and nothing more. Fill the traps first, then let it hold a clean house.
See SOSA Vaayu →
3
Size the fragrance by volume, not by rooms
One machine per 1000m³, both running the same oil
Villas are where people most often buy too many machines. Four small diffusers in four rooms produce four slightly different versions of the same scent and a house that changes character as you walk through it. Measure instead: length by width by height for each connected volume, in cubic metres, divided by 1000. One Vaayu is rated to 1000m³, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft at a normal ceiling height, so a two-floor villa is usually two machines, one per floor, both on the stair air path and both running the same fragrance with the bedroom floor a step softer. If your number for a single volume comes out well above one, that is not three Vaayu, that is one Angaan at 3,000m³ on the HVAC. And ceiling height is where floor-area rules of thumb collapse, which is exactly the situation in a double-height villa living room.
Tip: same fragrance in every machine, bedroom floor one step softer. A house should smell like one house.
SOSA Angaan
When a single volume is genuinely too tall or too large, the Angaan covers up to 3,000m³ on the building's own airflow instead of four machines fighting each other.
See SOSA Angaan →
The SOSA principle
A villa does not go stale as one house. The upstairs goes first, the guest bathroom goes worst, and the ground floor is usually the last thing you should worry about.
So open the top of the stair, and take a jug of water with you.
SOSA Angaan
When one Vaayu is not enough: SOSA Angaan connects to your HVAC and scents up to 3,000m³ - about 8,000-10,000 sq ft - which is the honest answer for a double-height villa volume. ₹25,999.

How many machines a villa actually needs

Here is the sizing in one table. It is the same maths a hotel would use, and it usually results in fewer machines than people expect.

If the villa is a second home rather than a weekend house you use constantly, the routine matters more than the machine: how to maintain fragrance in a second home you don't visit every day covers the refill intervals and the caretaker instructions. If you would like the house to be ready before you arrive rather than after, how to freshen a holiday home before arriving is the scheduling version. And whether the SOSA Vaayu is genuinely useful for villas that stay closed answers the buying question directly, including where we think it is not worth it. One technical point decides most of this block. The Vaayu is waterless: it nebulises pure fragrance oil from a 400ml tank and adds no moisture at all. Ultrasonic diffusers, which is what most home diffusers are, mist water plus a water-based fragrance, so they add humidity and they hold a tank of water. In a house that is shut for weeks you do not want standing water sitting in an empty room, and in a humid region you certainly do not want to add moisture to cushions and wardrobes that are already struggling. That is a technical reason, not a commercial one.

Most villas are over-specified, not under-specified. Four small machines smell like four rooms. Two, sized to the air, smell like one house.

The SOSA specification for a house that stays closed

Two machines, one decision, and the decision is air volume. The Vaayu handles a normal-height villa floor and is the machine most houses need one or two of. The Angaan takes over when a single volume is genuinely double height or the house runs to 8,000-10,000 sq ft. Both are waterless, which matters in a house that stands empty between visits, and both are made in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The count comes from air volume, not from budget or room count. And in a villa, do the drains before anything else: there are more traps than you think and a dried-out one produces a smell no machine will touch. If a musty smell survives a full day of airing and drying, look for seepage or a leak, which is a building problem. A note from Sonal

The first villa I ever scented properly taught me the lesson I now give everyone: I had planned for five machines and the house needed two. Rooms are not the unit. Air is. A villa is usually two or three connected volumes with a staircase joining them, and once you think of it that way both the airing and the fragrance get simpler and cheaper.

On arrival day, the stairwell is your best tool and a jug of water is your second best. Open the top and the bottom and let the house breathe through itself, then go around every drain and floor trap, because a villa has far more of them than a flat and the guest bathroom nobody uses is nearly always the source of the worst smell. Only then would I run a Vaayu on each floor, or an Angaan if the living volume is genuinely double height.

And the honest part, which matters more in a big house than a small one. A villa in a coastal or monsoon region can smell musty rather than stale, and musty is microbial growth in damp material. That is a drying and cleaning job, and no machine on our website addresses it. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. Frequently asked questions

How do I make a villa smell good after it has been closed for a week?
Open the highest window at the top of the staircase and a low opening on the ground floor so warm stale air leaves through the top, then open every internal door and run the ceiling and exhaust fans. Pour a mug or two of water down every drain, floor trap, unused bathroom, utility gully and terrace drain, because a villa has many more of these than a flat and they dry out while the house is empty. Strip the beds and stand the mattresses in moving air, prop the cushions and open the wardrobes. Scent last.
How many scent machines does a villa need?
Size it by air volume. Multiply length by width by height for each connected volume and divide by 1000 cubic metres, which is what one SOSA Vaayu covers at Rs 11,999, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. A typical two-floor villa is two machines, one per floor on the stair air path, both running the same fragrance. A genuinely double-height volume or an 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft house is one SOSA Angaan at Rs 25,999 on the HVAC instead.
Why does the upstairs of my villa smell worse than the ground floor?
Because warm air rises and takes the accumulated smell with it, so the stale air of a shut week collects on the upper floors and in the stairwell. Upstairs is also where the bedrooms are, and a bedroom's mattress and wardrobe are the biggest emitters in a closed house. Open the highest opening first, strip the beds, and stand the mattresses on their sides in moving air.
Why does my villa smell like drains when we arrive?
Because the water seal in the drain traps evaporated while the house was shut. Every floor trap, basin and unused bathroom holds a small pool of water that blocks sewer air from coming back up the pipe. In an empty house that water evaporates in a week or two, and the drain becomes an open pipe into the room. Pour a mug or two of water down every drain, floor trap and unused bathroom, and repeat it on every visit.
Should each floor of a villa have a different fragrance?
No. Use the same fragrance in every machine and run the bedroom floor one intensity step softer than the ground floor. A house that changes scent as you climb the stairs reads as a set of rooms rather than one home, which is the opposite of what you want after opening it up.
