Tiering is the standard solution to a large list and a finite budget, and it is a genuinely good one. It also has four parameters, and hosts reliably get three of them right and the fourth wrong - which is a shame, because the fourth is the cheapest to fix. This is the method page: how big the top tier should be, who belongs in it, how large the gap can be, and how the two gifts leave the building.
Quick answers — read this first
What are the four parameters of a tiered gift structure? Size of the top tier, visible justification for membership, the ratio between the tiers, and the choreography of handover. The fourth is the one hosts most often get wrong.

How big should the top tier be? Five to fifteen out of a larger list. Small enough to read as a special relationship rather than as a sorting exercise.

What is the test for good choreography? That nobody should be able to count them. The standard gift goes at the door; the top-tier gift is given privately, earlier in the evening, in another room, or the next day.
The short answer
Short answer: Tiering has four parameters. Size: five to fifteen people in the top tier. Justification: membership should map onto something the room can already see. Ratio: keep the top tier under about twice the standard gift. Choreography: hand them over separately, so nobody can count them - and this is the one hosts most often get wrong.
The pick: a SOSA return gift - consumable, no shelf space, from ₹299 a head.
Bulk: 10 to 200+ pieces quoted on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531. Rates are not published here.

A return gift succeeds when a guest uses it rather than leaves it in the car. Fragrance is consumable, needs no shelf and suits a guest list you only half know. SOSA return gifts start at Rs 299, and bulk quantities are quoted on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
Straight answer
How do I create tiered Diwali return gifts?
Four parameters. Size - five to fifteen people in the top tier, because ten out of eighty reads as a relationship and forty out of eighty reads as a sorting exercise. Justification - membership should map onto something the room can already see, such as immediate family or the friends who helped you host. Ratio - keep the top tier under about twice the standard gift: a hanging car perfume at ₹449 with a reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 works, ₹449 against ₹3,999 does not. Choreography - the standard gift at the door, the better one privately, earlier in the evening, in another room, or the next day. The test is that nobody should be able to count them, and this is the parameter hosts most often get wrong. Quantities quoted on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
Size five to fifteen, visible justification, ratio under 2x, and separate handovers. The fourth is the one that fails.
If you want one answer for a mixed guest list: hanging car perfume from ₹449, because almost every adult guest drives and almost nobody has done anything about their car. Bulk quantities quoted on WhatsApp.

Four parameters, and the fourth is the one that fails

Tiering is not a compromise. It is often the correct design even when the budget is generous, because premium formats make more assumptions than cheap ones - a reed diffuser wants a surface and a suitable room, a device wants a socket and an operator, a personal fragrance wants a taste - and assumptions are dangerous across a list you do not know. So giving fifteen people something better and sixty-five people something broadly useful is usually a better outcome than giving eighty people the same expensive thing. That said, it has four parameters and they are not equally difficult. Parameter one is size, and small is a matter of legibility rather than economy. A top tier of ten out of eighty reads as a special relationship: a handful of people the host is particularly close to, which everybody understands and nobody objects to. A top tier of forty out of eighty reads as a ranking, because at that proportion it is no longer a small group of intimates - it is a sorting of the guest list into halves, and a guest who works out they were sorted into the lower half has had a worse evening than if everybody had received the same candle. Five to fifteen is the useful range for most parties. Parameter two is justification, and the requirement is that membership be visible to everybody including the people not in it. Immediate family. The two friends who came at four to help you set up. The people whose own party you went to last week. These are relationships the room can already see, so a gift that maps onto them is not information, it is confirmation - and nobody resents confirmation of something obvious. A tier based on something invisible is different: if the top tier is the people who are professionally useful to you, that is detected quickly and read exactly as it is, and it costs more socially than the gift is worth. Parameter three is the ratio, which almost nobody thinks about and which quietly determines how the structure is read. A small gap reads as generosity; a large one reads as classification. Four hundred and forty-nine rupees against seven hundred and forty-nine is a ratio of about one point seven and sits comfortably within ordinary variation. Four hundred and forty-nine against three thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine is nearly nine times, and at that distance the two objects stop being versions of the same gesture. The workable rule is to keep the top tier under roughly twice the standard gift. If you want to spend far more on one person, that is entirely fine - but it should be a separate gift on a separate day rather than a tier at the same party, because at that scale no amount of choreography hides it. Parameter four is choreography, and this is the one that fails. Hosts get the size right, get the justification right, choose sensibly on ratio, and then hand both gifts over at the same door in the same twenty minutes, which undoes all of it. Two visibly different gifts leaving one hallway on one night is the single way a return gift can actively offend, because it makes the structure legible to everybody. Three mechanisms fix it. Time: give the top-tier gift in the first half hour, while the room is still thin - this also turns it into a private moment rather than a transaction at a door, so the gift is actually received. Space: give it in another room during the evening, where coats are, or on a balcony. Deferral: send it the next day, which removes the problem entirely and works particularly well for slightly formal relationships. The test for all three is the same and it is complete: nobody should be able to count them. What does not work is identical wrapping around obviously different objects, because size and weight are read in the hand before anybody looks at the paper. Now the pairings, which follow from the ratio rule. A hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine rupees for the main list with a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine for the top tier is the standard structure and the most robust. The car perfume is the widest-hit-rate gift in the range because it is addressed to a vehicle rather than a body, so it assumes nothing about anybody on a list you barely know; the diffuser is the most undemanding object in the range, with no flame, no socket, no switch and no water, running six to ten weeks on a 50ml bottle with reed count as the only control - four or five in a compact Indian flat. A coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees with a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine is the cheaper version at a ratio of two, and the candle is the only thematically correct format for a festival of light. And the Mysore orange blossom car spray at five hundred and forty-nine with the Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five is the same structure one level up. Three product-level cautions for the top tier. A reed diffuser should go to somebody whose home you have been inside, because it assumes a surface, a room size and a household that likes scented rooms - coverage follows enclosed volume rather than floor area and stops at the first closed door, so a 50ml bottle scents one room and an open-plan space wants the 130ml from one thousand two hundred and forty-nine rupees. Pick a quieter register where you are less sure, since the whole household lives with it for months. And any device is a capability that must arrive complete: the Sukoon at one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine rupees goes with the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine, three to six drops per tank, making two thousand one hundred and ninety-eight complete - a machine with nothing to run in it is an errand with good packaging. Reed oil must never go into a machine; the three systems are separate. Two closing points. Counting and logistics do not get easier because there are two tiers - buy ten to fifteen per cent over your count on the main gift, stage everything by the door in one container before the first guest arrives, and appoint one person to run the standard handover for the evening while you handle the top tier yourself. And a short handwritten note to each person in the top tier is worth more than an upgrade: it costs nothing, nobody else sees it, and it is the part that is remembered. On quantity: there is no published bulk rate, minimum order quantity or lead time, because the right number depends on the quantity, the mix and the date. Send the guest count, the per-head budget and the date on WhatsApp and it comes back in writing.

1
Parameters one and two
Five to fifteen, and visibly justified
Ten out of eighty reads as a special relationship; forty out of eighty is a sorting of the guest list into halves. And membership should map onto something the room can already see, so the gift is confirmation rather than information.
Tip: A tier based on professional usefulness is detected quickly and costs more socially than the gift is worth.
2
Parameter three
Ratio under about twice
Rs 449 against Rs 749 is roughly one point seven and sits inside ordinary variation. Rs 449 against Rs 3,999 is nearly nine times, at which point the two objects stop being versions of the same gesture.
3
Parameter four
The one that fails - nobody should be able to count them
Hosts get size, justification and ratio right and then hand both gifts over at the same door in the same twenty minutes, which undoes all of it. Fix it with time, space or deferral: the first half hour, another room, or the next day.
Tip: And a handwritten note to each person in the top tier is worth more than an upgrade, because nobody else sees it.
The SOSA principle
Hosts get three of the four parameters right and then hand both gifts over at the same door within twenty minutes, which undoes all of them at once.
Tiering is often the correct design even with a generous budget, because premium formats assume more.

Tiers that work

The three standard pairings, all inside the ratio rule, plus the cautions that attach to the top tier. Note that a diffuser assumes a surface and a room while a trio assumes only a person - which makes the trio the safer top tier when you cannot picture somebody's home.

The SOSA scent edit
Pairings and cautions
Scent Why it suits the mood
Car perfume ₹449 with reed diffuser ₹749 to ₹849 The standard structure and the most robust - a gift that assumes nothing about anybody for the list, and the most undemanding object in the range for the tier.
Candle ₹379 with reed diffuser ₹749 The cheaper version at a ratio of two, with the candle being the only thematically correct format for a festival of light.
Car spray ₹549 with Attar Trio ₹1,055 The same structure one level up - and the trio goes to a person rather than a room, so it asks nothing about a home you have not seen.
Top-tier cautions A diffuser needs a home you know and a quieter register. A device must arrive complete - the Sukoon ₹1,899 with a ₹299 concentrate. Reed oil never goes into a machine.

Related: smaller gifts for regular guests and diffusers for VIPs, VIP guests at a private party and luxury return gifts for premium guests. The high-intent version is affordable for 50, premium for 10, and the numbers page is guest count and per-head budget. Shop the car perfumes from ₹449, the reed diffusers from ₹749 and the attars from ₹379.

If you want to spend far more on one person, do it on another day. At nine times the price, no amount of choreography hides a tier.

A note from Sonal

Return gifts fail in a way everybody has experienced from both sides. You spend real money across fifty guests, and a fortnight later most of it is in a drawer or a kitchen cupboard. The test I use is not what it cost per head - it is whether it will be finished. A box of mithai is finished in four days and forgotten. A decorative object is never finished at all.

Fragrance sits in a useful middle. It gets used up over weeks or months, it needs no shelf space, and it works for a guest list you only half know - which is the real condition of a Diwali party, where you know twenty people well and forty barely at all. Car fragrance in particular has the widest hit rate we see, because almost every adult guest drives and almost nobody has thought about what their car smells like.

One honest note about bulk. We do not publish a bulk rate, a minimum order or a lead time on a blog page, because those depend on the quantity, the mix and the date, and a number written in an article is a number that will be wrong by the time somebody reads it. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your guest count, per-head budget and date and we will put a written quote against it - including when the honest answer is that a price point is not worth doing. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create tiered Diwali return gifts?
Four parameters: a top tier of five to fifteen people, membership that maps onto something the room can already see, a ratio under about twice, and handovers separated in space or time so nobody can count them.
Which parameter do hosts get wrong?
The choreography. Most get size, justification and ratio right and then hand both gifts over at the same door within twenty minutes, which makes the whole structure legible to everybody.
How big a gap between tiers is acceptable?
Under about twice. Rs 449 against Rs 749 sits inside ordinary variation. Rs 449 against Rs 3,999 is nearly nine times, at which point the two objects stop being versions of the same gesture.
Is tiering only about budget?
No - it is often the correct design even with a generous budget, because premium formats assume more. A diffuser wants a surface and a suitable room, a device wants a socket and an operator, a perfume wants a taste.
What should the top tier actually get?
A reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 if you have been inside the home, in a quieter register since the whole household lives with it. The Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 if you have not, since it goes to a person rather than a room.
