Everyone wants a number and I cannot give them one, because the honest answer is not a setting - it is a procedure. What I can give you is the procedure, which takes about three weeks and costs nothing.
Quick answers — read this first
How strong should fragrance be in a modular kitchen showroom? Lower than in almost any other retail category, and for a specific reason: your customers sit through a 60 to 90 minute design consultation rather than walking through in four minutes. Exposure compounds over an hour and a half, so a level that reads as pleasant at the door is usually too much by the end. Set it for the ninetieth minute, not the arrival - and if a customer can name the fragrance, you are already above the right number.

Why can't I just judge it myself? Because your nose adapts to a room within about twenty minutes, which makes the person most invested in the decision the least able to make it. The only usable readings come from people who have just walked in from outside, and the only long-run measurement in the building belongs to your designers, who breathe that air nine hours a day, six days a week. If the team says it is too much, it is too much, and a yes-but from them counts as a no.

What hardware do I need to hold a level, and what does it cost? Something with a fine intensity adjustment and a lock on it. Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 - a Vaayu would be the wrong buy at that size. From roughly 1,500 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, with adjustable intensity and a key-lock, which is the feature that stops a level creeping upward over a season.
The short answer
Short answer: lower than almost any other retail room, because customers sit through a sixty to ninety minute consultation and exposure compounds. Set the level for the ninetieth minute rather than the arrival, take every reading from someone walking in from outside, and treat the designers who breathe it all week as the only real measurement in the building.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) started at its lowest useful intensity and key-locked once the number is found, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) where the showroom is a single room under about 750 sq ft.
Next step: run the three-week procedure below, write the number and the date on a card, and send us the notes if the readings disagree with each other - Ask for a retail scenting plan.
How strong should a kitchen showroom smell - the doctrine in five linesLower than any retail room you have been inSet for the ninetieth minute, not the arrivalYour own nose adapts within twenty minutesIf a customer can name it, it is too strongNobody can promise it moves a business number
The number itself is worthless to anybody else, because it depends on your volume, your air path and your air conditioning. The procedure for finding it transfers perfectly, and it is the same procedure in every showroom I have worked on.

Straight answer
How strong should ambient fragrance actually be inside a modular kitchen showroom?
Lower than you will want it to be, and lower than almost any retail room you have stood in. The reason is structural rather than a matter of taste. A clothing store is a four-minute visit and a kitchen showroom is a ninety-minute one, and exposure compounds across that hour and a half. The setting that reads as gentle and welcoming when you walk through the door is very often the setting that has become tiring by the time a family has finished choosing shutter finishes. So the rule is simple to state and hard to obey: set the level for the ninetieth minute, not for the arrival. The second structural fact is about you. Your sense of smell adapts to a room within about twenty minutes, which means the person who cares most about this decision is the least equipped to make it, and gets worse at it the longer they stay. That is why almost every over-scented showroom I have walked into was set by an owner standing in it at four in the afternoon deciding it needed more. Any usable reading has to come from a nose that has just arrived from outside. So here is the procedure, which takes about three weeks. Week one: start at the lowest setting the machine offers and leave it entirely alone, however faint it seems. Walk in from the street first thing every morning and write one word about what you find. Week two: sit at the consultation table for a full ninety minutes - not walk the floor, sit - and notice whether the air is still comfortable at the end. Ask two people who have never been to the showroom to walk in cold and say what they notice first; if either of them says fragrance before they say anything about the kitchens, come down. Week three: ask the design team. They are in that air nine hours a day, six days a week, and they hold the only continuous measurement in the building. Ask them privately, ask them after a normal week rather than a quiet one, and treat a yes-but as a no. Only raise the setting if all three readings agree that the room smells of nothing at the consultation table at minute ninety. Then write the number and the date on a card and key-lock the machine, because the commonest failure is not a wrong initial setting, it is a right one that drifts upward as people who cannot smell it any more nudge it along. Two useful tests to keep afterwards. If a customer can name the fragrance, it is too strong - the target is a room that reads as looked-after rather than as scented. And anyone on the floor should be able to switch it off in seconds, without asking anyone. On hardware, under about 750 sq ft the honest buy is one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, and a Vaayu would be the wrong machine at that size. From roughly 1,500 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, with adjustable intensity, a key-lock, timers so nobody compensates by running it overnight, and under 38dB so the machine itself never intrudes on a long appointment. It is waterless, adding no moisture to the room and leaving no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine, not a claim about your finishes. And plainly: no one can promise you that any setting moves footfall, enquiries or order value, and a supplier who offers you a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send us your three weeks of notes.
Lower than any retail room you know. Set for the ninetieth minute, take every reading from someone arriving from outside, ask the designers and treat a yes-but as a no. Then lock it. ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft, ₹11,999 from about 1,500.
To hold a level you need a machine you can adjust finely and then lock: one SOSA Vaayu - adjustable intensity, key-lock, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38dB. ₹11,999. Under 750 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 and the same three-week procedure.

SOSA Vaayu
Showrooms past about 1,500 sq ft
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, which on a normal display floor means it runs low rather than working hard. Adjustable intensity, key-lock, 1h/4h/8h/24h app timers, auto-stop, under 38dB, 5W, 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Sukoon
Under about 750 sq ft - buy this instead
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, with three 15ml fragrances included. A single-room showroom is easy to over-scent and this is the honest buy; a Vaayu here is rated for several times the volume you have, which is capacity you cannot use.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Vaayu
Fine adjustment, and a lock to keep it there
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

The three-week procedure

One week per reading, in this order, and no adjustments in between. It is slower than turning a dial until it feels right, and it is the only method I have found that survives contact with a real showroom.

1
Week one - start at the bottom
Begin below where you think it should be and leave it there
Set the machine to its lowest useful intensity and do not touch it for seven days, however faint it seems on day one. The instinct to increase it on the second afternoon is adaptation talking, not judgement. During this week take one reading a day and always the same way: walk in from the street first thing, before anyone else arrives, and write down one word about what you notice. A week of those words is more useful than an hour of standing in the room deliberating, because each one is taken with a nose that has been outside. If several mornings say nothing at all, that is information for week three rather than a reason to change anything now.
Tip: Photograph or note the setting on day one so you know what you started from.

2
Week two - sit for ninety minutes
The consultation seat is the only place the level is genuinely tested
Block out an hour and a half and sit at the consultation table doing ordinary desk work, exactly where a customer sits. Do not walk the floor - walking is how every over-scented showroom got that way, because movement keeps refreshing your nose. Notice how the air feels at minute ten, minute forty-five and minute ninety. The number you want is the one that is still unremarkable at the end. Then ask two people who have never visited to walk in cold and tell you the first thing they notice; if either says the fragrance before they mention the kitchens, come down a step and repeat the week.
Tip: Do this on a normal trading day with the doors opening, not on a quiet Sunday.

3
Week three - ask the people who live in it
Your designers hold the only continuous measurement in the building
The floor team is in that air nine hours a day, six days a week, which makes them the closest thing to an instrument you have - and it also makes them the people the level must be comfortable for, because a customer's ninety minutes is their Tuesday. Ask them individually rather than in a group, after a busy week rather than a slow one, and ask what it is like at four in the afternoon rather than at opening. Treat a yes-but as a no and come down a step. Then write the final number and the date on a card, tape it beside the machine, key-lock it, and give one named person the authority to change it.
Tip: Anyone on the floor should be able to switch it off in seconds without asking permission.

The SOSA principle
There is no correct number, only a correct way of finding one, and every method that works depends on a nose that has just come in from the street - because nobody already inside the building can tell you anything reliable.
Which is why the procedure takes three weeks and why the dial gets locked at the end of it.
SOSA Vaayu
Fine adjustment matters more than power: The Vaayu's intensity is adjustable across a wide range, and on a normal display floor it sits near the bottom of it rather than the top. ₹11,999.

The tests, and who performs each

Five readings, each taken by a different nose, because no single person in the building can judge this on their own.

The SOSA plan
Who takes each reading, and what it actually tells you
The test What to do
SOSA VaayuThe morning walk-in
You, from the street, before anyone arrives. The only moment your own nose is usable. One word a day for a week.
The ninety-minute sit
You, seated at the consultation table doing real work. Tells you whether the level survives a full appointment, which walking never will.
The cold visitor
Two people who have never been in. Tells you what a customer meets at the door. If they name the fragrance before the kitchens, come down.
The designers' verdict
Your floor team, asked individually after a busy week. The only continuous measurement in the building, and a yes-but counts as a no.
The naming test
Anyone, any time, permanently. If a customer can name the fragrance, the level is above where it should be. The target is looked-after, not scented.
SOSA VaayuThe lock
One named person, once. The number and date on a card, the dial locked, and nobody else authorised to move it.

The same problem from the customer's side of the table, with the comfort question worked through in detail, is in keeping a showroom fragrant without making long consultations uncomfortable. And if part of your plan was to vary the strength display by display, whether display kitchens can have different fragrance personalities explains why a shared volume of air will not allow it. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
The lock is the point: A key-lock keeps the number you chose after three weeks from drifting upward one well-meant nudge at a time. ₹11,999.
Set once, locked afterwards
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 - adjustable intensity, key-lock and app timers, rated to 1000m³ so a display floor runs it low.
See the SOSA Vaayu Book a scenting plan
The owner is always the worst judge of their own showroom's fragrance and almost always the only person allowed to set it. That sentence explains nearly every over-scented room I have ever walked into.

The SOSA kitchen-showroom specification

Two machines cover most modular kitchen showrooms, and the one you want is the one that lets you sit at the bottom of its range rather than the top of it. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Find the number with the three-week procedure, judge it from the consultation seat at minute ninety, and lock it when you have it. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or display styling; it is never used to cover another smell - not laminate, not adhesive, not cooking - and a showroom with an off-gassing, extraction or cleaning problem fixes that first and buys nothing until it has. And plainly: no one can promise you that any level moves footfall, enquiries or order value, and a supplier quoting you a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

Almost everyone who writes to me about strength wants a number, and I understand why - a number can be entered into a machine on Monday and forgotten. But a number from my showroom is useless in yours. It depends on the cubic volume of the room, where your air enters and leaves, how hard the air conditioning runs, how often the door opens, and how much hard surface there is to reflect it. What does transfer is the procedure, and the procedure is not complicated. It is just slower than turning a dial.

The part people find hardest is accepting that they cannot judge their own room. Twenty minutes inside and your nose has quietly agreed with the air; after that everything you notice is about how tired you are rather than how strong the fragrance is. That is why every reading in this guide is taken by somebody who has just come in from outside, and why the last word goes to the designers rather than to the owner. They are the ones who have to live in whatever you decide, and they are not being polite when they say it is fine, so ask twice.

On hardware: under 750 sq ft a Sukoon at ₹1,899; from about 1,500 sq ft a Vaayu at ₹11,999, chosen partly because a display floor uses a fraction of its rating and can therefore sit near the bottom of the dial; past roughly 5,000 sq ft an Aangan at ₹25,999. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How strong should fragrance be inside a modular kitchen showroom?
Lower than in almost any other retail category. Customers sit through a sixty to ninety minute design consultation rather than walking through in four minutes, and exposure compounds across that time, so a level that reads as pleasant on arrival is often tiring by the end. Set it for the ninetieth minute rather than the door, and if a customer can name the fragrance, it is already too strong.
Why can I not judge the level myself?
Because your sense of smell adapts to a room within about twenty minutes, so the longer you stand in your own showroom the less you can tell. Usable readings only come from a nose that has just arrived from outside. Walk in from the street first thing in the morning, ask people who have never visited what they notice first, and give the final word to the designers who breathe that air all week.
What is the actual procedure for finding the right setting?
Three weeks. Week one: start at the lowest useful setting and leave it alone, taking one walk-in reading each morning. Week two: sit at the consultation table for a full ninety minutes and see whether it is still unremarkable at the end, and ask two first-time visitors what they notice. Week three: ask the design team individually after a busy week, treat a yes-but as a no, then write the number down and lock it.
How do I stop the level creeping up over time?
Lock it. Levels rarely start wrong; they drift wrong, because everyone who works in the room stops noticing the fragrance and nudges it upward from a new baseline each time. A machine with a key-lock, a card beside it recording the number and the date, and one named person authorised to change it will hold a setting far better than good intentions will.
Does a stronger fragrance make customers stay longer or buy more?
No one can promise anything of the kind, and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support a figure, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from everything else in a ninety-minute visit. What is observable is the other direction: a level high enough to be noticed and named is a level a seated customer has to put up with, which is not what you are paying for.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room.
