Founder Diaries · Commercial Scent Marketing

Budgeting for scent is easy once you stop treating it as a marketing campaign and start treating it as a fixture — bought once, run cheaply, forgotten. Set aside a one-time hardware line and a small monthly fragrance line, and the whole thing sits comfortably inside a rounding error of your monthly revenue.
Quick answers — read this first
What's a sensible first-year budget? For a small store, roughly ₹4,000 setup plus ₹3,000–₹6,000 in refills across the year — under ₹10,000 all in. A showroom's year one is largely the
Vaayu (₹11,999) plus refills.
Capital or expense? Both, split cleanly. The machine is a one-time capital buy; the
refills (from ₹999) are the recurring expense line.
How much of revenue is that? For almost any electronics store, well under a tenth of a percent — the margin on one premium sale a year covers it.
The short answer
Short answer: An electronics retailer should budget a one-time hardware line (₹799 to ₹25,999 depending on size) plus a small monthly fragrance line of a few hundred to about ₹1,500 — a first-year total that a single premium sale comfortably funds.
The pick: the
SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for showrooms - waterless, so it adds no humidity near your stock, with app scheduling that maps to trading hours. Small stores from ₹1,799; ducted showrooms from ₹25,999.

Straight answer
How should an electronics retailer budget for scent marketing?
1. Split it in two: a one-time hardware line and a recurring fragrance line — never one blended number.
2. Hardware, small store: budget under ₹4,000 for a
Sukoon plus a
Boond and audition scents.
3. Hardware, showroom: the
Vaayu (₹11,999) is the whole line for a display floor.
4. Fragrance: set a monthly ₹300–₹1,500 refill line scaled to your space.
5. Sanity-check it: the whole year should cost less than the margin on your best single sale — if it doesn't, you've over-specified.

One-time hardware (₹799–₹25,999) plus a monthly refill line (₹300–₹1,500). Under ₹10,000 first year for a small store.
How to structure the budget
1
CAPITAL LINE
The machine is a fixture, not a campaign
Vaayu · scheduled₹11,999 Budget the diffuser the way you budget shelving or a display counter — a one-time capital item that depreciates over years of daily use, not a marketing spend that vanishes at month end. A
Vaayu at ₹11,999 spread across, say, three years of trading is a few rupees a day of hardware. Put it in the fixtures column, sign it off once, and stop re-deciding it every quarter the way you would an ad campaign.
Tip: A one-time fixture that runs for years is the cheapest 'always-on' marketing you own.
2
EXPENSE LINE
Fragrance is the only thing to forecast
Hotel CollectionFrom ₹299 The recurring budget is refills and nothing else. Set a monthly figure — ₹300–₹500 for a compact store, up to ₹1,500 for a busy showroom — and revisit it once you have two months of real usage.
Refills from ₹999 mean you are topping up a known cost, not signing a contract. Because there is no lock-in, you can dial the line up or down month to month as footfall and season move.
Tip: Forecast conservatively for two months, then let real usage set the number.
3
HEADROOM
Budget for the effect, not the maximum
Boond · billing₹799 The temptation is to over-buy — a bigger machine, stronger intensity, more zones. Resist it. Ambient scent's effect on dwell time and perceived quality is real but moderate; it crowns a clean, well-run store and rescues nothing. So budget for a gentle, correctly-sized signature, not the loudest possible one. A
Boond in the right corner earns its keep; a giant unit run flat out just spends more to achieve less.
Tip: Under-spec slightly and turn up if needed — it's cheaper than the reverse.
The guide's hero system SOSA Vaayu · Waterless Cold-Air Machine ₹11,999 Up to 1000m³ from one unit, Bluetooth app with 1/4/8/24h run windows, under 38 dB, and no water - so nothing is adding humidity to a showroom full of stock. Freestanding or wall-mounted. View this system →
Why year two costs far less than year one
The number that scares people is the first-year figure, because it carries the one-time hardware. But scent is front-loaded: once the machine is bought, every subsequent year is just fragrance. A showroom whose year one reads ₹25,000 drops to ₹10,000–₹18,000 a year thereafter, and a small store falls from ₹10,000 to ₹4,000–₹6,000. When you present the budget internally, show both numbers — the loaded first year and the lean ongoing year — so the machine is judged as the multi-year asset it is.
This is also the argument for buying the right machine once rather than a cheap unit you replace. A Vaayu that runs quietly for years is a lower total cost of ownership than a bargain diffuser you swap every season, and near stock its waterless design removes a moisture risk that no budget line should have to insure against.

The three systems an electronics store actually needs
The SOSA principle
Budget scent as a fixture with a fuel bill, not a campaign with a deadline.
Fixtures are bought once and judged over years; campaigns are re-argued every quarter. Put the machine in the first column and it stops competing with your ad spend for attention it doesn't need.
Audition two, keep one Hotel Collection Fragrance From ₹299 SOSA's own interpretations of the world's finest hotel scents - clean green-tea, bergamot and cedar through to soft white tea and vetiver. Cheap enough to audition two candidates for a fortnight each before you commit your store to one for years. View the collection →
Show finance two numbers, not one: the year you buy the machine, and every quiet year after when it's only fragrance.

The SOSA commercial edit
Whichever kind of electronics business you run, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on a staff member's memory, and waterless wherever it runs near stock. The Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own interpretations of the world's finest hotel scents - run across the range, and everything is supported from Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Honest notes for store owners: ambient scenting's effects on dwell time, perceived quality and recall are real but moderate - they compound a well-run store and rescue nothing; premises must be clean and well-ventilated first, because fragrance crowns good air and never substitutes for it. Ultrasonic systems (Boond, Sukoon) add a small amount of humidity and run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and the HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - near open equipment and in humid coastal cities, prefer waterless. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
For large-format showrooms SOSA Aangan · HVAC Nebulising Diffuser ₹25,999 Sits beside your air-handling unit and carries one signature through every zone the ducting serves - up to 3,000m³. For a showroom with an entrance, a display floor, demo zones and billing, it means one refill point instead of six, and no visible machines on the floor. View this system →
A note from Sonal
Everything is supported from Pune, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your store gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage of revenue should scent be?
Almost nothing — for the vast majority of electronics stores it lands well under a tenth of a percent of turnover. It is better judged against the margin on a single premium sale, which typically covers a whole year.
Should I lease or buy the machine?
Buy. SOSA sells the units outright with no contract, so there is no lease to carry. The
Vaayu (₹11,999) is a one-time capital line, not a monthly obligation.
How do I budget if I have multiple stores?
Budget one machine per store as capital, then a shared fragrance line. A chain often standardises on the
Vaayu so every branch smells identical — a consistency worth more than the modest cost.
What if footfall is seasonal?
Because there is no lock-in, dial the monthly
refill line up in festive season and down in quiet months. The hardware is fixed; the fragrance line flexes with your traffic.
Is a cheap diffuser a false economy?
Often, yes — a bargain unit near stock can add moisture, run loudly and need replacing. A correctly-specified SOSA unit is a lower total cost over the years it runs.
Budget, sorted
One capital line, one small fragrance line — and a signature that runs for years
Size the hardware to your floor, forecast a modest monthly refill, and let a single premium sale a year pay for the lot.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any brand's systems.
Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with longer dwell time, improved venue evaluations and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives unclean or poorly ventilated premises. Olfactory memory is unusually durable, which is the mechanism behind signature retail scents. The principal risk to electronic equipment from diffusion is added moisture and residue rather than fragrance itself, which is the basis of this range's waterless recommendation. SOSA systems: Boond 300ml (₹799) and Sukoon 500ml (₹1,799) ultrasonic units run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, up to 1000m³, 400ml tank, Bluetooth app and 1/4/8/24h timers, under 38 dB; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) is an HVAC nebulising system covering up to 3,000m³ (roughly 8,000-10,000 sq ft).
