★ The machine behind the scent layer
One Vaayu is rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - so it is a whole-floor machine, not a room gadget No water, no heat, no dampness, no residue, under 38dB, and about 1.5 units of electricity a month at ten hours a day Made in India · independent, not affiliated with any hotel · a portion funds girl-child education

This one is written for practices rather than homeowners. The sensory layers fail in good projects for boring, fixable reasons: they are agreed too late, they are not on any drawing, nobody allowed power for them, and nothing is handed over that tells the client how to keep them alive. Here is where each of those belongs in a programme, and what the paperwork should say.
Quick answers — read this first
When should an interior designer introduce fragrance into a project? After off-gassing and the deep clean, and before handover. Fresh paint, adhesives, engineered board and new upholstery release smell for weeks, and fragrance laid over that gives the client both at once. So the machine is installed and set once the site is cured, cleaned and aired, in the same window as styling and photography. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a twenty minute install: DC 12V/1A at 5W, 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, freestanding, wall or HVAC mounted.

What does a designer need to put on the drawing for a scent machine? Four things: position on the air path, a 12V supply, the mounting method, and refill access. Mark it in the hall near the entrance airflow or beside the air-conditioning return, at chest height or above, with a concealed socket or a 12V point within reach of the adaptor. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg on DC 12V/1A, 5W, so it needs a shelf, a wall bracket or an HVAC fixing and a tank that can be reached to refill.

How do you stop a client's home fragrance dying after handover? Hand over a written scent sheet, not a bottle. It should name the fragrance, the intensity setting, the timer windows, the machine's position and where to reorder the oil, and it should say when the 400ml tank will next need filling - up to about 75 days on a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) depending on intensity and run hours. Scent layers die because nobody documented them, not because clients stop caring.
The short answer
Short answer: put the scent layer after off-gassing and the deep clean and before handover, mark position, 12V power and mounting on the drawing, and hand the client a written scent sheet naming the fragrance, the intensity, the timer windows and the refill interval. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, at 5W.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) per connected floor volume, marked on the services drawing beside the air-conditioning return with a 12V point, installed at the styling stage and documented in the handover pack.
Next step: send the floor plan with the AC returns marked and we will position the machine and write the client sheet with you - ask us about a project specification.
Where the scent layer sits in a residential project programmeConcept - agree the sensory brief with the finishes, not laterServices - mark position, 12V point and mounting on the drawingFit-out - nothing is scented. Paint, adhesive and board off-gas.Post-clean - deep clean and air the house, then install and set the levelHandover - client pack: the scent, the setting, the refill, the schedule
The scent layer has exactly one correct slot in a programme: after off-gassing and the deep clean, before handover. Install it earlier and you are perfuming a construction smell. Install it later and it becomes the client's problem, which is how it disappears within a month.

Straight answer
How should a design practice build the sensory layers into a residential project?
Treat them as line items with a stage, a drawing and a handover document, exactly like any service. At concept, agree the sensory brief in the same conversation as the finishes: colour temperature as a number rather than a look, acoustic treatment in the hardest rooms, hardware and switch plates the client will physically touch, and one fragrance profile for the floor. Getting the fragrance line into the concept deck is the whole battle, because it moves scent from an afterthought into an approved scope. At services coordination, put the machine on the drawing. Four notes: position, power, mounting, refill access. Position follows air rather than furniture - the hall near the entrance airflow, or immediately beside the air-conditioning return, at chest height or above. Power is modest and easily missed: the SOSA Vaayu runs on DC 12V/1A, 5W from an adaptor, so you need a concealed socket or a 12V point within the adaptor's reach, and it is worth coordinating with your MEP consultant at the same time as the AV and lighting points rather than chasing a socket at the end. Mounting is freestanding, wall or HVAC, and the unit is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg, so a bracket, a shelf niche or a duct fixing all work. Refill access matters more than people expect: a machine mounted beautifully at four metres is a machine nobody will ever top up. During fit-out, nothing is scented. This is not a preference, it is the rule the whole layer depends on. Paint, adhesives, engineered board, new carpet and fresh upholstery release smell for weeks, and fragrance layered on that gives the client both smells at once. After the deep clean, once the site is cured, cleaned and properly aired, install and set the level - which is the same window as styling and photography. Set the intensity with somebody who has just walked in from outside, aim for a scent noticed in the first ten seconds and forgotten by minute five, then key-lock it. At handover, give them a written scent sheet. Not a bottle: a sheet naming the fragrance, the intensity setting, the timer windows, the machine's position and the reorder link, plus the date the 400ml tank will next need filling - up to about 75 days a fill depending on intensity and run hours. One machine, rated to 1000m³ or about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, covers a normal floor. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. We will write that sheet with you on a free project specification, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Agree it at concept, draw it at services coordination with a 12V point, install nothing until after off-gassing and the deep clean, set the level at styling, and hand over a written scent sheet.

The three things a practice has to get right

Three things separate practices where the sensory layer survives from practices where it quietly disappears six weeks after handover.

1
It has one correct slot in the programme
After off-gassing and the deep clean, before handover
Scent goes in late, but not last. Too early and you are perfuming a construction site: paint, adhesives, engineered board, new carpet and fresh upholstery all release smell for weeks, and fragrance on top of that produces both smells at once, which the client will blame on the fragrance. Too late - meaning after the family has moved in - and it becomes a purchase they make themselves, at which point the profile, the level and the placement are all outside your control and the layer stops being part of your scheme. The correct window is the styling window: the site is cured, the deep clean is done, the house has been aired, and photography is being set up. Install, set, lock, document. Twenty minutes, and it is the last trade on site.
Tip: if the paint smell is still detectable, you are too early. Wait.
SOSA Vaayu
A Vaayu install is a shelf or a bracket, a 12V adaptor and a level setting. It does not need a trade.

2
It has to exist on a drawing
Position, power, mounting, refill access
A layer that lives only in a conversation will not be built. Put four notes on the services or the RCP: the position, marked on the air path rather than the furniture layout, which usually means the hall near the entrance airflow or immediately beside the air-conditioning return, at chest height or above. The power: DC 12V/1A at 5W from an adaptor, so a concealed 5A socket or 12V point within reach, coordinated with MEP alongside lighting and AV points. The mounting: freestanding on a shelf or niche, wall bracket, or fixed to HVAC, for a unit of 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg. And refill access, which is the one everybody forgets - if the tank cannot be reached comfortably by the person who will actually fill it, it will not be filled. One machine per connected volume; a floor closed off by a staircase door is a separate volume.
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ per unit - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - so most residential floors are a single position on the plan.
See SOSA Vaayu →
3
It has to survive you leaving
The handover pack is what keeps the scent alive
This is where most sensory work dies, and it dies quietly. Six weeks after handover the tank is empty, nobody knows what the fragrance was called, somebody's cousin has changed the intensity, and the house smells of nothing. The fix is a single page in the handover pack. Name the fragrance. State the intensity setting and why it was set there. State the timer windows and the reason - two low windows a day, and 30 to 45 minutes before guests rather than as they arrive. Mark the machine's position on the plan. Give the reorder link for the oil and the expected refill date, which on a 400ml tank is up to about 75 days depending on intensity and hours, so roughly five fills a year. Add the honest line too: this is a finish and not an air purifier, and the house needs airing and cleaning underneath it. Clients keep what they understand.
Tip: hand over a sheet, not a bottle. The sheet is what survives.
SOSA Vaayu
Key-lock exists for exactly this: your setting stays your setting after everybody else has walked past it.
See SOSA Vaayu →
The SOSA principle
A sensory layer that is not on a drawing and not in the handover pack is not part of your scheme. It is a suggestion.
Practices lose the scent layer at handover, not at concept. One page fixes it.

What goes on the drawing, and where

Here is the programme in one table: what happens to the scent layer at each stage of a residential project, and what it costs you in time.

The SOSA plan
The scent layer, stage by stage through a project
Project stage What happens to the scent layer
Concept and finishes
Agree the fragrance profile alongside the light temperature, the acoustic treatment and the hardware. Getting the line into the approved scope is the whole battle.
Services coordination
Four notes on the drawing: position on the air path, a 12V point coordinated with MEP, the mounting method, and refill access for whoever will actually fill the tank.
Fit-out and off-gassing
Nothing is scented. Paint, adhesives, engineered board and new upholstery are still releasing smell, and fragrance on top gives the client both at once.
SOSA VaayuPost-clean, styling and handover
Install, set the level with a visitor's nose, key-lock it, and issue the scent sheet. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, at 5W. View →

The companion piece to this one is how to choose a signature fragrance during an interior design project, which covers the on-site trial, the client sign-off and the exact contents of the scent sheet. For the specification itself - profile, intensity, position, schedule - see how to use fragrance as part of interior design, and for the underlying case to put to a client, why interior design is not only about what you see. This piece sits under our pillar guide on how to make your home feel more expensive.

The scent layer, as a line item

One machine per connected volume, one profile per floor, one written page at handover. Waterless, so there is no damp and nothing settling on wood, art, books or upholstery in a house you have just finished. Pure fragrance oil in a 400ml tank, CE, RoHS and SGS certified, made in India. Two honest lines worth repeating to a client in writing. First, sequence: fragrance goes in after airing, deep cleaning and off-gassing, never before, and it works alongside ventilation and cleaning rather than instead of them. Second, scope: it cannot cover damp, cooking, pet odour or a new interior still curing, it is not an air purifier, and we make no health claim for it. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. A note from Sonal

I work with a number of design practices, and the difference between the ones whose sensory work survives and the ones whose does not has nothing to do with taste. It is administrative. The surviving ones put the fragrance line in the concept deck, put the machine on a drawing with a power point beside it, install it after the deep clean rather than before, and hand over a page explaining it. The others buy something nice on the last afternoon.

If you take one thing from this page, make it the drawing. Position on the air path, a 12V point, the mounting, and refill access. One Vaayu covers 1000m³ - about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - so a normal residential floor is a single position, usually the hall near the entrance airflow or beside the air-conditioning return. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, so it will sit in a niche, on a bracket or on the duct.

And the part I would put in your handover pack verbatim. A home smells good because it is aired and clean first, then scented. Olfactory signals reach the brain by a short pathway that sits close to the regions handling memory and emotion, which is why a smell can return a place to you years later, faster than a photograph of it can. That is a description of how recognition works, not a promise about mood or health: fragrance is a finish, it is not an air purifier, and we make no health claim for it. It cannot cover damp, cooking, a musty cupboard or an interior still off-gassing. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

When in a project should an interior designer install the scent machine?
After off-gassing and the deep clean, and before handover, in the same window as styling and photography. Fresh paint, adhesives, engineered board, new carpet and upholstery release smell for weeks, and fragrance laid over that gives the client both at once. Installing after the family moves in is worse in a different way, because the profile, level and placement all move outside your control.
What should be marked on the drawing for a diffuser?
Four notes. Position on the air path, usually the hall near the entrance airflow or immediately beside the air-conditioning return, at chest height or above. Power: DC 12V/1A at 5W from an adaptor, so a concealed socket or 12V point within reach, coordinated with MEP alongside lighting and AV. Mounting: freestanding, wall bracket or HVAC fixing for a unit of 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg. And refill access for whoever will actually fill the tank.
How many machines does a residential project need?
One per connected air volume in most homes. A SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is rated to 1000 cubic metres, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, and a 1,200 sq ft flat at a ten foot ceiling is only around 340 cubic metres. A floor closed off by a staircase door behaves as a separate volume, so a two-floor villa usually takes two rather than one per room.
What should be in the client handover pack for fragrance?
One page. The fragrance name, the intensity setting and why it was set there, the timer windows, the machine's position marked on the plan, the reorder link for the oil, and the expected refill date - a 400ml tank runs up to about 75 days depending on intensity and hours, so roughly five fills a year. Add the honest line that the layer sits on top of airing and cleaning rather than replacing them.
Will a diffuser damage finishes in a newly completed home?
The SOSA Vaayu uses no water and no heat, so there is no mist, no dampness and no residue, which is why we recommend it in homes with veneer, joinery, art, books, leather and textiles. As with any diffuser, do not aim the outlet directly at a surface at very close range, and set the position so the plume has room to disperse.
