A car is the smallest space any of us scents, and the one we sit closest to. Two or three cubic metres of air, a metre from your face, with the windows up and the heater on for four months of the year. I say this to customers constantly and it still surprises people: almost every car fragrance problem I am sent is a dose problem, not a scent problem. The bottle is not weak and the oil is not wrong. The cabin simply gives fragrance nowhere to go, and winter takes away the little ventilation that was rescuing you in October.
That is why we sell the hanging bottle and the spray at the same price. They are the same oil. One gives you a mild level that is always there and asks nothing of you; the other gives you a strong level the moment you decide you want one. Neither is the better product, and pricing them differently would only push people toward whichever we wanted to sell. How long does a car scent need to be the same before it counts as a signature?
Months rather than weeks, and the honest measure is not a duration but a behaviour: it has become a signature when the people who ride with you regularly no longer comment on it, because they have stopped noticing it as a fragrance and started reading it as your car. In practice that tends to take a few bottle cycles - a hanging 12ml runs four to six weeks, so three or four refills is a reasonable marker. The important part is not to reset the clock. Changing register every time a bottle empties means the association never forms, however good each choice was. Refilling the same glass with a 15ml refill from Rs 399 keeps the register identical rather than approximately similar, which matters more over years than it sounds.
Should I choose an expensive or rare scent to make it feel like a signature?
No, and the mechanism explains why. A signature works through repeated exposure over time, and price does not enter into that at any point. The scent that becomes yours is the one you can sustain, and sustainability is largely a question of how easy and how affordable the reorder is - which argues for the more accessible end of the range rather than against it. Lemon at Rs 449 with a Rs 399 refill is a perfectly serious signature, and held for two years it will do something that nothing changed monthly can do at any price. Can I keep the same signature when I change cars?
Yes, and it is one of the more pleasing things about a habit rather than a possession. The register travels with you: the same hanging bottle style, the same refill, the same setting. What changes is the dose, because cabin volume changes. A larger SUV holds considerably more air than a sedan, so a single hanging bottle at the mirror will be a front-of-cabin source in a much bigger space and the rear rows will get less - that is geometry rather than a fault, and it usually means loosening the stopper slightly rather than buying anything different. A smaller car means tightening it. Bear in mind that a brand new car is also off-gassing from adhesives, plastics and foams for the first months, which argues for starting lower than your usual setting and working back up.
What if my family does not like my signature scent?
Then it is not a signature, it is an imposition, and the fix comes before any question of taste.
